Since everyone’s (not) an expert, the prevailing wisdom is that you can lightly pet a fish so long as your hand is underwater/wet and you’re not stressing the fish. Your human fingers won’t rip off the slime coat because shockingly fish brush against things all the time.
Just so people feel free to enjoy this and not have a “well actually” run up on them.
