Donât get me wrong, public libraries are great. But they also reflect a lot of the local cultureâŠ
While this is sadly accurate, I think (and pardon the Rafiki quote) you have to âGo beyond what you see.â Religion is from 200-299 in the Dewey Decimal System. Wicca is at 299 (or at least Scott Cunningham is, I donât have many books on me for reference here). However, there are other places too look.
For Metaphysics, try 110-119
130-139 is Parapsychology and Occultism - so here are things about dreams, divination, and other occult methods, but I have also seen some of my other Pagan books listed in this section
Philisophical systems such as pantheism, naturalism, and others are in the 140s
154 holds books on the subconscious and altered states (this is part of the psychology section)
Ethics are in the 170s and covers a wide variety of ethics
Ancient, Medieval, and Eastern Philosophy is in 180-189
Western Philosophy is in the 190s
Mythology is 201
291 Comparative religion
292 Classical (Greek & Roman) religion
293 Germanic religion
294 Religions of Indian origin
295 Zoroastrianism (Mazdaism, Parseeism)
393 is Death Customs
398 is Folklore, particularly fairy tales, but still possibly helpful learning about the culture of bygone times
The 400s contain books about language if you feel that your path requires a specific language
500s are about science, which I find particularly important for understanding the world itself.
Natural history is at 508
Astronomy is in 520-529; physics from 530-539
550-559 is earth sciences; geology is specifically at 551
Plants are 580s while agriculture is at 630 (because you should know how to care for them if youâre gonna grow them)
753 Symbolism, allegory, mythology, and legend in art
Various literature from various cultures in various languages is from 800-899
Last of all is history of various places around the world, from 930 to 998 (999 is about extraterrestrial worlds, please donât ask me, I didnât put it thereâŠ)
I got all of this on Wikipedia, but if you already have a book that you want to find more like, I have posted directions on finding the Dewey number it would be at here. Also remember to check the reference section. Pagan books may have been placed here to prevent stealing, as these books are some of the most commonly stolen books from libraries. You can copy the relevant pages (generally for about 10Âąper black and white page) or you can sit there for a couple hours and read, making notes of what you find relevant.
Also, if you are one of those people who are stealing these books, please try to return them, because other people would love for this to be a resource. (I know, seasonmysoul, you can keep that one⊠itâs been years and they wonât remember it anyways. Also, please feel free to remind me of your favorite number, because I canât for the life of me remember itâŠ)
The main point of this, though, is that as Pagans, we can find a wealth of information all over the library and we shouldnât limit ourself to the 10 numbers they have reserved for us!
This has been a wall of text. I apologize.
Thank you! I didnât think that they had different numbers. However, thinking back to my last visit to the library, it seems like there wasnât much wiggle-room, which I think might be why the books on religion were smooshed in with parapsychology and self-help books. Iâll have to take another look and see if I was in the wrong section. My main point for this chart was mostly the ratio of Bibles to other faiths, as well as the overwhelming number of self-help books. But Iâll definitely go back and see if thereâs more.Â
@bibliophilicwitch
I donâtn know if this is quite what you were looking for, but I knew that there was a post waaaaaaaaaay back from 2012 about genres and paganism/occult. If nothing else maybe this will jumpstart some ideas?
An Alchemical Salt Ritual for Ongoing Health, Wealth, and Happiness in your Life
You will need:
A large white or natural beeswax candle.
A letter opener or a thin plastic knife for marking the wax.
A small bowl of salt.
A small white bag.
Timing:
Beginning Sunday evening, around sunset.
The spell:
Etch the alchemical symbol for salt on the side of the candle.
Set the candle in the center of your home with the bowl of salt in front of it.
Light the candle, saying, âHealth, wealth, and happiness, gifts I seek these three. Magical salt, I ask you, draw them to me.â
Draw the symbol on the surface of the salt.
Sprinkle a few grains of salt into the flames so it sparkles, saying the spell words again, Blow out the candle.
Repeat the spell exactly each night until the candle is burned through.
Put some salt into the bag, and on the bag trace with the index finger of your dominate hand the alchemical salt symbol.
Hide the bag in the room nearest the center of the home.
Wash away the rest of the salt under a faucet, repeating the spell words.

SELF-REFLECTION SPREAD
I mostly use tarot as a tool for personal introspection. Even people who donât believe in divination of any kind can use tarot as an aid to explore different perspectives to a situation or even their own psyche. These are some things which I believe I need to confront about myself before achieving any real personal growth.
1. FIXATE
What are the parts of yourself or your life that you tend to get hung up about. Confronting yourself can be good, but overly obsessing on a particular problem or aspect of yourself can inhibit growth.Â
2. IGNORE
Conversely, what do you tend to push to the side. This can go both ways: some are unable to see the good things in themselves or their lives, while others gloss over their faults and avoid addressing their problems.Â
3. FALSE
What are the things we think to be true about ourselves, or our lives that are not. These are often negative qualities, a lot of people think they are less capable, less deserving or less worthy than they really are.Â
4. DECIPHER
What about ourselves have we yet to understand. Everyone has some things about themselves which they donât yet fully grasp or cannot quite put to words.
5. WANT
What do we most want from ourselves and our lives. The things we wish were more true about ourselves or that we aspire to be. This is a long process to achieve, and part of that is learning that we canât just skip to this step, we need to deal with the other parts of ourselves too, including the undesirable parts, before we can achieve true personal growth.
Note: Tarot is not a substitute for professional counselling and other forms of licensed therapy! Feel free to use it as a complimentary practice (unless otherwise advised), but do not rely on it as your sole means of treatment if you believe you need professional counselling. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â

Spell Candles Transfer text from tissue paper to a candle using wax paper and your hair dryer. You can print something too by taping the tissue to some card stock before sending through your printer. Use color tissue for color candles. You get the idea. Endless possibilities! Good tutorial here: http://www.theshabbycreekcottage.com/2011/10/day-5-easy-print-candles.html
(Note: candle will drip more than usual, so use a safety plate, or something, underneath the holder.)

I am happy to present my own Wamilyâs version of finding your signifier card using a Tarot deck.  (Wamily, just in case you donât know, is a witch family.) Â
Please keep in mind that this is a practice passed down and developed by a handful of witches related to me, and isnât the process that every cartomancer uses. Â I hope this helps you on your witchcraft journey!
My own signifier card was found when I was a wee little witch. Â I chose the Chariot (which, if you know me personally, is Salt through and through.) Â My strengths and limitations are very much found in this card and I am drawn to its imagery indefinitely. Â
Comment with your signifier card once you find it! Â I am excited to see what you receive.
Mojo Mirror
This one uses the reflective power of a mirror to return bad energy back to someone who deserves it. The results on your target will usually be closely related to what they did to you in the first place.
A small mirror without a frame
Black paint
Dark rum
Cloth or newspaper
Hammer
Do this spell after the sun goes down, though you donât have to actually be in the dark when you perform it. Pour rum over the mirror, and leave it on a cloth or in a dish to air dry on its own. Once the rum has dried, use a brush to paint a thick X over the face of the mirror.
Repeat the name of the person you are casting the spell on 5 times, and then smash the mirror (do this over newspaper or cloth to minimize the mess). Gather up the shards and throw them in the garbage. Even though the mirror is not left intact, itâs reflective energy persists to keep this revenge spell active until it reaches your target.
Tips from BD: - If you donât have rum, vinegar will work just as well. - Small frameless mirrors can be found in craft stores, or you can pop one out of an old makeup compact or compact mirror.

moon phases.
new moon: setting intentions. active energy.
waxing crescent moon: resting, focusing. passive energy.
first quarter moon: taking action. active energy.
waxing gibbous moon: trusting, holding faith. passive energy.
full moon: acknowledging. active energy.
waning gibbous moon/disseminating moon:Â receiving, expressing gratitude. passive energy.
last quarter moon: returning, giving thanks. active energy.
waning crescent moon/balsamic moon: reflecting, resting, restoring. passive energy.
new moon: the moon is literally new. a rebirth. use this moon for intentions to do with fresh beginnings, starting again, cleansing.Â
waxing moons: the moon is increasing its size, it is opening; use these moons for intentions about gaining, growing or expanding.
full moon: the moon is at full charge, and can be the most powerful phase in the moon cycle. use this moon for intentions to do with power, clarity, or psychic ability.
waning moons: the moon is decreasing its size, it is closing; use these moons for intentions about ridding yourself of something (or someone), or purging.
application to the craft:
focus is the most important aspect of bringing an intent to manifest itself. focusing your energy can be made simpler by working with a compatible energy in the world as you focus that intent.Â
if the world around you is releasing an energy complementary to yours, it can be easier for that energy to find its way into reality; as opposed to facing any natural adversity.
cast passive energy intents in passive phases of the moon. (tranquility, creativity)
cast active energy intents in active phases of the moon. (strength, control)
this, in my opinion, is the concept of âthe power of thought.â when more than one person thinks a thought, that thought holds more weight. this could explain why people practicing or praying together can often yield stronger, or more immediate results. it is a similar reasoning as incorporating tools and ritual into magick, as well.
your energy is a power in itself. but using the power of the elements, the environments, and the world can serve to add to that power.Â
The last post I made about using the Lenormand reading style using Tarot cards was pretty well received, so I decided to show another typical spread for LenormandâThe Portrait.
If you did not see my last post about how to use Tarot when reading Lenormand spreads, I would suggest starting there because it says a bit more about the reading style of Lenormand and has an example so you can see how it plays out with Tarot cards.

If I ever catch you putting neat essential oils on your skin I am gonna be VERY DISSAPOINTED IN YOUÂ and also any blog who tells you its fine is a hack who doesnât know what the fuck theyâre talking out and is probably going to end up with chemical burns.
NOTE; adding a few drops of oil to your regular skin oil/lotion or shampoo is not using it neat. That is diluting it, and is perfectly acceptable.
I mean, if you get chemical burns itâs because there are harmful chemicals in your oils. Per FDA regulations, an essential oil only has to contain 7% of the actual ingredient to be called âpureâ. The rest can be synthetic. This is why there is a greater risk of irritation and why many are not safe for consumption, even citrus oils like Orange and Lemon. And this is why you can get a chemical smell. Stay away from store and other very cheap brands.
AFAIK the only brand on the market thatâs ACTUALLY 100% pure is doTERRA. And even then, straight oils can cause irritation on people sensitive skin and children. ALWAYS dilute your oil. Fractionated Coconut Oil is the best way to do this, as it will stay liquid. You can also use regular coconut oil or an I scented lotion. Or of course diffuse a few drops with water.
Iâve seen some pretty bad burns on people who used straight clove and pepper oil. Itâs not just because thereâs additives. Newsflash! Essential oils are made of chemicals! SOME OF THOSE CAN BE HARMFUL, PARTICULARLY WHEN HIGHLY CONCENTRATED AS THEY ARE IN ESSENTIAL OIL. Â
And thereâs lots of carrier oils you can use. No one is the âbestâ. Almond, olive, jojoba, rosehip, avocadoâŠwhatever someone finds works best for them. And doTerra is a good brand, but by no means the ONLY good brand.
That 7% thing you just said? Is a myth, usually used by essential oil companies to claim that THEIRS is DIFFERENT!!!!! Itâs untrue, and a lie, and NOT TRUE. So far as I can tell, the first mentions of this were by sales reps of a multi level marketing scam to try and hawk their shit. Itâs bullshit. And NOT TRUE.

Here is a great page on the dangers of various essential oils. Â
100% this. I donât even use 100% tea tree oil neat on my skin, I dilute it with jojoba oil. This doesnât make it any less effective. If anything it makes it more effective, because Iâm not irritating the shit out of already irritated and damaged skin. Oils that explicitly state on the bottle are okay to be applied directly to the skin? Have typically been diluted with something else to make it safe. (NB: water does not dilute essential oils, it disperses them, but doesnât dilute them. The only time water and essential oil should meat without a carrier oil is in a vaporizer or oil burner.)
Also be really careful using menthol oils (yâknow, the stuff you use for congestion) around small children, as they can actually cause breathing difficulties in small children and even result in death. https://naha.org/naha-blog/peppermint-safety-info/
I had a witchy friend who made her own sinus congestion oil blend for years, she was a licensed aromatherapist and had been working for decades in the field. And without thinking, used it on her daughter who was under 6, to help ease a bad head cold. The child went in to respiratory distress and died. She did everything right, the oils were 100% organic natural and well diluted with appropriate carrier oilsâthat still didnât make it safe to use on a child. I have midwifing friends who wont even apply vicks vapor rub to their kids because of the risk of respiratory arrest.
If your baby is congested, by all means fill the bathroom with warm steam if it will help them breathe, but avoid menthol oils. Please. And do not apply any essential oil neat to their skin. Iâm begging you.
Natural does not mean safe. âChemical freeâ does not mean Safe. It just means you better know what the fuck youâre doing and that requires doing more research than trusting pinterest-tumblr witch posts that talk about âchemicalsâ with no basic understanding that Essential Oils are a chemical substance. Synthetically scented or otherwise.
30 days of super simple spells day 19
A modern key
A techno amulet for the modern age.
Needed
A blank USB key
Internet
A way to make the USB key into a necklace.
1. Plug in USB key.
2. Make three blank folders titled as so
THE_SOURCE
THE_PURPOSE
THE_FINALE
3. In the first folder you will place images, texts, anything that you feel will power the amulet. so signs of power ,sigils, galaxy pics where ever you feel that the magical spark will come from. text files  with things you find to be just pure energy and mp3s with songs you find pump you up are also encouraged.. Â
The second folder will contain one thing, the program of the amulet, you are going to write out a .txt file and then switch the font over to wingdings or something to make sure its unreadable ( we want this to create a sigilized effect)
The final folder will contain the finale here is where we place the trappings of the amulet. like the first folder you can add anything you want just so long as it reflects the intention of the amulet pictures of certain gods inline with your intent, pictures, mp3s, poems, stories, pdfs of books about the intent (for love a Jane Austen novel, protection a pdf of an instructional book on self defense or spells of protection, for courage a biography of famous generals. There is no limit to this stuff.)
4. Place all the folders in a new folder titled â FIAT_VOLUNTAS_MEAâ this translates to â my will be doneâ from Latin, it ties the amulet together to create a link between the folders and power the amulet.
5. Decorate and carry the amulet with you.
Note guess what is inside a usb key, a circuit board microchip. Guess what that is made of, silicon. Guess what else is silicate material, most of the planet including quartz, that fun thing in your radios, watches, smartphones computers and hung around a lot of your witchy necks or carried in your pockets. the idea of charging a usb key isnât so different from charging  crystal, except that I feel itâs more hands on (at least in the manner Iâve presented).Â
Dangerous Herbs
Listed below are dangerous herbs and herbal combination and explanations as to why they are dangerous. Do not try any of these herbs, orally, on the skin, or in any other way ever (or during pregnancy or nursing, if listed as such).
*Some of the herbs mentioned are safe in small doses are are written as such. Other herbs are toxic in small doses or any amount. This is not a complete list.
Belladonna - Nightshade, bittersweet nightshade is an extremely poisonous herb and is absolutely deadly. It is related to Henbane. Side effects can include dry mouth, enlarged pupils, blurred vision, red dry skin, fever, fast heartbeat, inability to urinate or sweat, hallucinations, spasms, mental problems, convulsions, and coma.
Blue Cohosh - Can cause miscarriages, especially during early pregnancy. This herbs in combination with other herbs has been used as an aborfacient. It works by loosening and relaxing the uterine muscles. This is why it is often suggested as a remedy for pms and menopause.
Black Cohosh -Â Can cause miscarriages, especially during early pregnancy. This herbs in combination with other herbs has been used as an aborfacient. It works by loosening and relaxing the uterine muscles. This is why it is often suggested as a remedy for pms and menopause.Â
Chaparral - This herb can cause serious liver damage, liver failure, and acute hepatitis.Â
Comfrey - Comfrey can be taken in small doses for upset stomach and pms, but using a lot is dangerous. Comfrey contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, a type of poison that causes liver and kidney failure as well as cancer. They can be absorbed through the skin as well.Â
The amount of PAs found in comfrey changes according to the time of harvesting and the age of the plant. The roots have 10 times higher amounts of PAs than the leaves.
Devilâs Claw -Â Harpagophytum, means âhook plantâ in Greek. Devilâs claw causes additive effects in many medications. It can cause changes in blood pressure as well.
Eucalyptus - Eucalyptus can not be consumed. Taking 3.5 mL of undiluted oil can be fatal. Even applying too much to the skin and absorbing large amounts is dangerous. (Use it very lightly, dilute it, or use a humidifier.) Signs of eucalyptus poisoning might include stomach pain and burning, dizziness, muscle weakness, small eye pupils, feelings of suffocation, and some others. Eucalyptus changes how many medicines break down in the liver.
Foxglove - Poisoning by this herb can cause stomach upset, small eye pupils, blurred vision, strong slow pulse, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, excessive urination, fatigue, muscle weakness and tremors, stupor, confusion, convulsions, abnormal heartbeats, and death. Long-term use of foxglove can lead to symptoms of toxicity, including visual halos, yellow-green vision, and stomach upset.
Golden Seal - This herb is a uterotonic; brain damage (kernicterus) has developed in newborn infants exposed to goldenseal. Do not use goldenseal during pregnancy or breast-feeding.
Hemlock -Â Neuromuscular blockage can occur to the point of death if it blocks the respiratory muscles.
Henbane - Side effects include dry mouth, red skin, constipation, overheating, reduced sweating, vision disturbances, increased heart rate, urination problems, drowsiness, restlessness, hallucinations, delirium, manic episodes, and death. Henbane is poisonous and not safe for self-medication.
Kava - In the South Pacific, kava is a popular social drink, similar to alcohol in Western societies. It is used by some to treat anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia, but like many medicines used to treat these types of issues, Kava runs the risk of being too much of a âdowner - oversedation.â It can make you unable to operate machinery, fatigued, and worsen depression. Large doses can also effect the liver and cause yellowing of the eyes. Also, some of the dangerous chemicals in kava can pass into breast milk and might hurt a breast-fed infant. Avoid this herb if you have Parkinsonâs disease or if you will undergo or have recently undergone anaesthesia as it effects the central nervous system. Alcohol, sedatives, and benzodiazepines interact with downers.
Licorice Root - This tasty herb, when taken in high doses, may cause tiredness, absence of a menstrual period in women, headache, water and sodium retention, and decreased sexual interest and function in men. It may also cause early delivery in pregnant women and miscarriage in early pregnancy. This root has also been seen effecting hormone levels in the body and interacts with oestrogen. It also seems to rid the body or potassium. It can also cause heart failure.
Mistletoe (European) - Can cause chills vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, and other side effects. Short-term, frequent use of European mistletoe might cause liver damage. Lowers blood pressure.
Mugwort - This herb is dangerous in large quantities. Thujone, a ketone and a monoterpene that occurs naturally in two diastereomeric forms:-α-thujone and-ÎČ-thujone is present in wormwood Thujones cause a slight high and a feeling of relaxation, which is why it is enjoyed by smokers and drinkers (as a tincture or bitters), can also cause breakdown of muscle, nightmares, seizures, dizziness, confusion, numbness of arms and legs, paralysis, and death. The chemical is also said to be responsible for absintheâs hallucinogenic effects.
Mugwort might cause a miscarriage because it can start menstruation and also cause the uterus to contract.
Pennyroyal - Pennyroyal has been used as an antificant and can also kill pregnant mothers. Do not use this herb as a method for miscarriage. It can cause irreversible damage to the liver and kidneys, nervous system, brain, and cam cause dizziness, confusion, seizures, and death.
Peony - Peony can cause uterine contractions and is unsafe to use during pregnancy. It also slows blood clotting.
St. Johnâs Wort - This herb interacts with SSRIs and other types of medications for the treatment of depression. In bipolar, bipolar depression, mania, manic depression, and other related disorders, St. Johnâs wort can trigger a major upswing or manic episode in patients. This herb also interacts with birth control.
Wormwood - Wormwood one of the main ingredients in the alcoholic beverage, Absinthe. The latin Absinthium comes from the ancient greek word apsĂnthion, which some claim translates to âUndrinkableâ, referencing the herbâs extreme bitter flavor. It is closely related to mugwort, which is toxic in large doses, but wormwood is even more so. The herbs also contained thujones. See Mugwort.
Valerian - This herb, especially the root, can cause oversedation. Alcohol, sedatives, and benzodiazepines interact with downers. Valerian can cause some side effects such as headache, excitability, uneasiness, and even insomnia in some people. A few people feel sluggish in the morning after taking valerian, especially at higher doses. Itâs best not to drive or operate dangerous machinery after taking valerian.Â
Wintergreen - This type of mint can be dangerous in high doses. Taking wintergreen oil or large amounts of wintergreen leaf can cause ringing in the ears, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, stomach pain, and confusion.
