I feel like eventually Shane and Ilya read up on kink and safe practices and decide to establish a safe word. Only, the safe word is a massive stressor to Shane because he feels like it means he has to stay present enough to check in with himself about how he feels about everything and that means he can no longer get out of his head. So he ends up overthinking everything - how something feels, whether he likes it, whether he should like it, what it says about him that he likes it, actually, does he like it? It's a little uncomfortable. Should he be using his safe word now? He probably should, right? Ilya said he was supposed to use it if he was uncomfortable. He wasn't supposed to just push through, even though pushing through uncomfortability is Shane's whole thing and actually feels pretty fucking rewarding but if Ilya doesn't want him to be uncomfortable then he has no business liking it.

After multiple instances of Shane getting so in his head that he ends up more tightly wound after sex than he was before they decide that a safe word isn't for them.
