Solas created the Dalish
I was just looking for stuff about the Elven language and came across this discussion on Reddit about the song "I'm the One", which was played at the end of DAO in Elvish and then migrated to Inquisition in English. In short, the author believes that this song is about Solas, and given what we know so far, I'm inclined to agree.
I feel sun through the ashes in the sky Whereâs the one whoâll guide us into the night? Whatâs begun is the war that will force this divide Whatâs to come is fire and the end of time
I am the one Who can recount what weâve lost I am the one who will live on
I have run through the fields of pain and sighs I have fought to see the other side
I imagine the elves freed by Solas, the survivors of the world's divide, gathering in groups around the fires and singing this song in unison. At first they seem to ask: where are you, our leader? And then they answer in his name, but over time, as this song is passed down from generation to generation, as is customary among the Dalish, they seem to adopt his role and his philosophy themselves.
So, I remembered that Lavellan might have agreed to remove the vallaslin, arguing that the Dalish had sworn to never be slaves again. At the time, I thought it had something to do with the whole Tevinter thing, but what if it had deeper roots?
They had lost the world as they knew it, and not everyone was thrilled that the Veil had been separeted, but everyone understood that their freedom had come at a high price. They had built their entire way of life around preserving their independence and culture, shunning the representatives of the powerful empires, and they had internalized this so much that when the real Elgar'nan came, they kicked him out.
I think this is a great success for Solas as a liberating warchief and a half-forgotten legendary figure. And damn, how ironic that he can't stand the Dalish (with optional exceptions).
This game is written too well.
