Chapter 1 Execution: Thousand Knocks
Dangan Ronpa OST, composed by Masafumi Takada
"Reeeeeen, don’t needlessly apologize! I already expect you to be utterly boring, there’s no reason to be sorry for something that isn’t a disappointment! It makes you weak in front of your enemies! Geez, even apologizing for asking an extra question…" She made a fist and...
"Ahh well, everyone thinks that! Even if you hate yourself and think you're worthless you would never think of yourself as prejudiced! It's a nice though, 'I could never think less of disabled people!', but it's functionally useless, yeah? The people who don't treat me like a person don't think they are doing it, but they are! I don't think that's something we can decide for ourselves, if we're prejudiced. We wouldn't know! If anyone ever told us so, we'd make rationalizations for why they are wrong! I'm sure, as someone whose talent is aaaaaallllllllllllllllll about people, you must know that! Aha ha, have you ever put two people together based on who they hate? Now that's a good foundation for a relationship! Oh, yeah, I knew Amy and Carlos belonged together based on their mutual hatred of the gays! It was obvious Sammy and Jackson needed to date based on how they both doubted that some Asian kid knew jack about romance. Is Matchmaking like the service industry? Do you just have to grin and bear it or can you kick those assholes out? As you might imagine, my job doesn't have those kinda of problems! Aheheheheh!" Sumiko laughed loudly, grabbing the attention of a few passing students. She gulped a few breaths in and simmered down, lowering her voice to a more serious tone.
"Everybody needs a confidence boost now and then, especially when you're locked up in a place like this!" She opened up her arms and gestured around the room. "I'm a bit, aah, out of my element here. A few of my 'friends' I was able to sneak in the school with me, but they would probably kill someone if they bit them. The whole point is that I'm not interested in dying. I am a sitting duck in this school, I can't fight back." She smiled a bit, and looked over at him a bit excitedly. " I guess you're right, in a lot of ways we are different! If someone attacked you you might actually make it! That is, um, a good thing to have in this school! I would like to have that..." Sumiko's smile faltered as she bit her lip. She could see Ren's frustration with himself, but she wasn't exactly skilled in comforting others. She didn't want to be alone here, but it seemed like everything was always conspiring to keep her that way.
"I think you have a really good chance of, um, making it out of here alive!" She tried to speak with her usual showy confidence, but she kept faltering. How uncomfortable had she made things? Bad topics are best dealt with by changing them, right? Yeah, she definitely had fuzzy memories of a loved one telling her that.
" I think matchmaking's pretty serious! Though, aha, I guess you already knew that from our previous conversation. Even though it's not as big a deal as life or death scenarios, that doesn't mean it's not as important to you as my problems are to me!" God, that was really pithy and dumb. She unconsciously sneered, frustrated with herself. But she smiled quickly when she saw Ren's own floundering. She laughed when he started back tracking.
"Hey man, it's o-fucking-kay! I am 'just' a murderer! Does the justification really excuse the deeds? I know what I am, you don't have to make it seem better somehow, I'm not gonna flip out om you for telling the truth. But no, it wasn't my choice to be an assassin. My Aunt asked me to kill to save my Uncle's life. Since then I was either doing it under one of their wishes or to support my family. In fact, I've barely 'Gone to Work' since I moved out on my own. Nobody at all in the few months before going to this school." Sumiko sighed a bit, slightly proud of herself for maintaining her usual composure. If she was too serious it would tip him off how much this information meant to her. She had to keep in mind his skill was actually decoding people.
I can't see very well right now, so i will fix the problems with this tomorrow. Ren is wearing a vest because my internet connection was gone and that's what my brain thought he wore.To be friends with Sumiko you have to indulge her 24/7.
"Ahhhh? Distracted again I see!" Sumiko rolled next to him, slamming her hand against the table. The noise caused Ren’s hand to jerk and spill tea on himself. She pursed her lips and perused over their classmates.
“How can you get any info from these people if you aren’t...
"Reeeeeen, don't needlessly apologize! I already expect you to be utterly boring, there's no reason to be sorry for something that isn't a disappointment! It makes you weak in front of your enemies! Geez, even apologizing for asking an extra question..." She made a fist and shook it for effect.
Sumiko put on a mock, over dramatic thinking pose, but it slowly turned into a real one. Why had she talked to Ren again? She went back in forth in her head between being honest and just giving an obviously fake answer. God, how could she even be considering being truthful? It was like a dirty word, truth. She bit her lip self-consciously before talking.
"Hnnng those are difficult questions! Difficult, personal questions! Oh Ren, don't tell me you're trying to take advantage of my emotional insecurity over the death of my friend?! That's low down! Manipulative, even a little bit evil!"
She giggled lightly and briefly put her hand to his chest. "And I like that in a man!"
Sumiko inhaled deeply, pulling or pushing her hands with her breaths.
"Alright, alright, I'm serious now. I'm super...emotionally...intense...I guess I kept talking to you because you are different than most people! No, really! Most people don't really consider me a person worth spending time on. Hell, most people don't act like they consider me a person! People think that cause i'm in a wheelchair that i'm different. Sometimes they act like they think natural selection should have just wiped me out, so i didn't really 'earn' my place as a real person. Even nice people talk down to me or think i'm stupid...it's really helpful in my career though! People don't expect me to be capable at all, much less of killing. Ah, but don't think I'm a martyr, I'm sure there have been people who consider me worthy but are just put off by my being very weird! But still, I guess it was nice to be...well, i know fear isn't the same as respect, but you don't fear sometime inferior! You must have thought i was an equal to be afraid of me, and that's nice! Not to mention people aren't exactly intimidated by a very cute girl who only comes up to their stomach! It was nice that you were intimidated of me before you knew a was a killer..."
Sumiko sat back comfortably, closing her eyes.
" ..It was a real confidence boost. But really, of course you are on my Don't Kill list! Despite my...feelings...about your job you still aren't a bad person, and I only kill criminals. You're on my don't kill as opposed to just not being on the death list is, well, because i don't think you should die! I thought the stuff you said to me had a very- ahhhhh- unique strength to it. I know it's odd to say there's strength in admitting you don't like your 'career' but you don't have the spine to get out of it, but there is! Self-awareness is a good thing, yeah? Besides, if I killed you it would be a little like killing a part of myself, and i'm not really the self-harm type, ehehehe!"
She sighed openly, clearly a bit drained. This conversation was not going how she wanted, this is the real problem with talking to people she could scare; It was waaaay too easy to just talk.. Comfort does not keep secrets safe! Her eyes shot open, and she looked at Ren wistfully, cracking a small but genuine smile.
"You seem like you are like me; a person who has been molded not by their own experiences and wishes but by the desires of other people. Right?"
Ren sat in the mess hall, doing one of his favorite activities: people watching. Or, perhaps, he wasn’t all that fond of it. It was mostly just something he was used to doing. When he thought about, a lot of things he did were things he only did because they’d been made a habit, through the...
"Ahhhh? Distracted again I see!" Sumiko rolled next to him, slamming her hand against the table. The noise caused Ren's hand to jerk and spill tea on himself. She pursed her lips and perused over their classmates.
"How can you get any info from these people if you aren't even aware of your surroundings? I've never let anyone sneak up on me, that's a good way to get yourself kiii-iii-killed!" She sang a bit and moved closer, putting a hand around his shoulder.
"I mean, you would have been screwed if that's what a wanted! I'm a snake master; i could have just walked(wheeled!) on by, sprinkling in a few drops of Habu snake venom into that tea of yours." She grim inced and wiggled her fingers at his cup of tea, as if it was the trouble of all her hurt feelings.
" Nobodies paying attention, you would have just collapsed violently until you died! The report would just show you were poisoned, not saying it was snake venom, and all i would have to do is grab a few vials of poison and hide it in some sucker's room! God Damn-" Sumiko collapsed back in her chair, her arms dangling over the side, and started pouting. "That would have been perfect!"
"Maaaaan that would have been great! Like, which one of these yahoo's would know they effects of Habu snake venom?? None of them, that's who! Ah well, hindsight is 20-20!" She sighed, blowing the bangs out of her face.
She looked over at Ren and his expression and smirked, quickly adding, "Not that I would have killed you! You have to understand that i'm a freaky genius when it comes to killing and other evil shenanigans My mind is just going craaaazy not doing any said shenanigans! But really, I promise you are officially on my do not kill list." Sumiko quickly averted her gaze, her entire demeanor falling flat.
"Sadly, my list of companionship has been smacked in two and mopped into non-existence." She was quiet a moment, but then laughed quietly at her own joke. "Ahhh it's good to laugh, even at poorly-constructed jokes. Obviously I'm off my game a bit! But I'll be back to full capacity soon!
Sumiko propped her head on her hand, put on a big, fake frown, and started talking in a cutesy depressed voice. "So tell me Wen, why are you sittin' all awone, in da corner, wif just a single cup of tea for company?"

Five days.
It had been five full days since Kenneth had left his dorm.
And with good reason.
He’d been hiding out, all bunkered up in his little room ever since the end of the last trial. He knew what was coming, he wasn’t stupid. The looks he got said it all. One toe out of line, and you’re...
Sumiko rolled out into the light.
"Hi, I don't think we've met." She flashed a bright white smile and spoke with a calm and even tone.
"My name is Tsukino Sumiko(I already know who you are!), and I am a master of snakes." As if to demonstrate her point, a mid sized creature slipped from one of her sleeves, through her interlocked fingers and into the other sleeve. She moved her wheelchair so it was basically pinning you to one side of the thin hall. There is no way to get out without asking her to move.
"Look, you can calm down a touch. You've been in that room a hell of a long time! Unfortunately, you've been making me wait for a long time. It's okay, I'm nice! I'll forgive you. Sure, when i first came over here i was planning to kill you. I was going to kill you and burn your body, and I was going to leave this school and fulfill a promise to my part-my friend." Sumi's tone was light and airy, any more so and she would be singing. She was smiling happily, as she continued talking she put her hands over her heart and looked up to Ken as if she was having a revelation.
"I've been mostly in the background for my school life here. I only had one friends, and her name was Suzu! You can imaging how...distraught i have been over this whole mess. But I realized that if Suzu had to die, she would want to die so somebody else could live. So you could live, Kenneth, but that's okay! I realized I would be dishonoring her memory to kill you-and how easy it would be for me to do so- and the last thing i want is to make her death have no meaning. Except, there's this thing, Ken!" Sumiko tilted her head, eyes closed, and grabbed Kenneth's hand.
"I come from a rough part of Japan. A violent, crime filled part! I am a violent, crime-filled person, I know that! But I am a specific sort of violent,crime-filled person-one full of honor! One of my many codes of conduct is that are family and ones close to us are us!" She pursed her lips and looked back up at him.
"What does that have to do with anything? Is what you may be asking. Well, in this case, it means that the bonds and promises we make also apply to our loved one, and become their burdens in death. Suzu does not have family, and if she did they certainly do not exist in here! I think, that since her soul is gone because of you, that makes you the carrier of her burdens. You may not have been very important in her life, but you were necessary in her death!"
Sumiko smiled wide, a laugh playing at her lips.
"Suzu and I, we owed each other something. You owe me, Kenny."
Speed Dating (Open for all)
"Well, let's make sure we squeeze this experience dry! Let's play a game called 20 questions! You tell me alllllll about yourself! As long as one or all of your first five questions are asking if i'll talk about MYself, hehehehe!"
She leaned forward and looked at you with a bored expression.
"So let's pretend I'm not a genius and didn't think to look up everyone i was going to be schoolmates with. Though I'm not sure if I've ~formally~ met you? I hope you aren't so dull you just fell into the ether of my head!"Sumiko playfully knocked against her skull. Was she just teasing you or had the two of you never met?
"Sooo...do you like snakes?"
“Ah, you almost lost the eye! What danger, what excitement! I’m glad you felt no pain, it makes you a much better meat shield! Oho, just kidding. I’m much more apt at protecting myself than anyone else! Besides, if i did need such as thing, it would be much easier to...
"Waaaah! What a big number!" Sumiko slapped her hands together and smiled, thinking about the dozens of injuries and terrible situations Suzu must have gone through.
"2000...I guess somebody 'up there' must need you to live, yeah? You know, if you believe in that sort of thing! You probably have a purpose, Suzuki. I bet the gods are keeping you in their back pocket for something special!" Sumiko had a small tone shift, showing that she meant what she said.
"I know cause I'm special too! MY 'career' is dangerous too; the gods kept me safe(if you believe in that sort of thing!) to fulfill my purpose, and I've already done so. Buuuuut I'm pretty sure you don't want someone like me on the enforcers!" She put her hand on Suzu's shoulder again, and her tone regained a cheerful tilt.
"I would like to be your ally Suzu! You are definitely smart and strong, but you're also protected by the Gods! I was once, but not anymore. I think if I don't take precautions I will die here. Maybe we- I mean, maybe I need an indestructible girl to face off against an indestructible Kitty! But if you really think I'm right for the enforcers, I will help them too!" Sumiko drew her hand back and giggled into it, pointing at the mid sized snake that had wrapped around Suzuki's neck.
"All of my Allies need to be okay with snakes, y'know? I think I could help with your requests when we leave this place. I...escaped from my uncle, and I could help you do the same. I'm ready to be your ally Suzu Suzuki!!"
Sumiko practically slapped Suzu's hand with her own and shook it with over the top vigor.
“Hehehe, you don’t look so good! I think you should sit down!” Sumiko smiled at him, but he di not meat her eyes and was breathing heavily. She straightened her back and suddenly put her hands to his shoulders. That made him look at her! Even someone as weak as her was able to...
" You think so? Is that supposed to make me feel any different? Peddling something you don't believe in is terrible, you're almost as bad as me!" She sneered at the floor, avoiding eye contact. She rolled back a little bit, giving him a little bit of space.
"How do you decide? What do you do to make unappealing people seem worthy of love? When do you strike so you can get change in your pocket and a better record. Please, since you seem so unwilling to defend your career, what makes up a matchmaker? Don't make me ask again, ahoho~" She instantly reverted back to a slightly condescending, but cheerful tone.
She was growing more and more unhappy with this conversation. This whole school was affecting her much more than she first thought. She was not supposed to go off on random boys! She was supposed to be endearing towards any boy who could help her in any way, and intimidating to the worthless remainders. This kid was definitely scared, but he was still here, talking to her as if she was an equal. He was clearly too good to talk to- She was clearly too good to talk to him! Clearly. She frowned without realizing it. Why was he still talking to her?
Sumiko quickly rolled over the doorstep into the room. She was surprised to see the room was a bare as her own; did that mean this girl didn’t have many personal connections either? she grinned when she heard the girl’s slip of the tongue.
“Ooooh? do you think i’m...
"Ah, you almost lost the eye! What danger, what excitement! I'm glad you felt no pain, it makes you a much better meat shield! Oho, just kidding. I'm much more apt at protecting myself than anyone else! Besides, if i did need such as thing, it would be much easier to just buy someone into the school! Don't worry; that's not why i'm interested in you!"
Sumiko leaned forward, lightly sipping on tea, and suddenly placed her hand on Suzu's shoulder.
"I think we could be powerful allies Suzu Suzuki! I see that you don't think your talents are worthwhile, but they are! I could care less about the food eater on the other side of me, but the skills you have learned from dangerous stunts are invaluable. Hopefully there won't be any more murders, but if there are, we could help not only ourselves...but the others!" Sumiko was not sure exactly what would make this girl tick. What could she offer that would convince her?
" I could be the offense and you could be the defense! We could protect each other now, and if i murder happens we can get information out of others." She lifted her hand anyway and leaned back in her chair and stretched a bit, showing how comfortable she was.
"You know, I wouldn't mind being your...ally once we escape, There must be something you would like? My connections are nothing to joke about, I could offer anything!" Sumiko then offered her sword to Suzu. "How about you give this to someone who needs it? I have other defenses, and I'm too weak to bring this down with enough force to protect myself anyway!"
Sumiko grabbed the teapot and perfectly poured herself and Suzu more tea. "As cheap as it is, I'm quite fond of this tea. I drink this back at my flat; it reminds me of when I lived with my family." Suzu had showed some sign of emotion when smelling this tea for the first time, it was worth it to show some information about herself to get some about this odd girl across from her.
Kaworu the Super High School Level Surfer!
Well, now that we have our dorms I think it’s time to form alliances. Clearly an environment as hostile as this calls for some sense for solidarity. I think the obvious choice is those who our dorms are closest to. So, Suzuki and Nakaguchi, how about we talk? I suggest you...
Sumiko quickly rolled over the doorstep into the room. She was surprised to see the room was a bare as her own; did that mean this girl didn't have many personal connections either? she grinned when she heard the girl's slip of the tongue.
"Ooooh? do you think i'm so thin-skinned to be hurt by such idle comments? Now that's an insult. Don't think that a weak body means a weak heart, hehehe!"
She parked herself in front of the small table, watching as the girl brought over cheap-smelling tea. "Are you sure your depth perception is good enough to poor tea? I'm not interested in having hot tea poured in my lap by a clumsy girll! Oho, just kidding!"
"My name is Sumiko Tsukino, and I am a girl with a dangerous talent! I would say mine is even more dangerous than yours! If you mess up, you could escape with your life! If I mess up, I'll die an overwhelmingly painful death." She closed her eyes and put on and obviously over-dramatic face at her potential loss of life.
"Ah, quickly Suzu Suzuki! Introduce yourself to me! We're going to pretend I don't have much more money than you and that I did not research my fellow students! What's your name and talent, hmm?"She leaned over the table and smiled, cupping her ear to say she was listening completely.
"Oh! Before I forget..." She turned in her chair and quickly unsheathed a samurai sword, it's blad already having a dent or two."I did say to bring our weapons!"
i love the girls who hate to love because they’re just like me
the girl with the deadly snakes
“Pffff…I guess I was generous to look you students up! Clearly none of you are worth it. Aha, I’m not kidding this time.” She lifted her eyes and tilted her head, an ominous expression on her face.” I guess I’m not being fair, I supposed I just expected Super High School...
"Hehehe, you don't look so good! I think you should sit down!" Sumiko smiled at him, but he di not meat her eyes and was breathing heavily. She straightened her back and suddenly put her hands to his shoulders. That made him look at her! Even someone as weak as her was able to forcibly bring him to the ground. She smiled to herself, now she was really looking down on him! Her smile slipped away instantly; she didn't need height or strength to be better! She knew this. She knew this!
"Here, drink this." She reached towards the pack on the back of her wheelchair, pulling out a water bottle. "Ne? What? Don't look at me like that, I was going to poison you I wouldn't do it know, dummy! People saw you walking out after me, have a brain will you?!" She giggled and leaned over and handed him the water bottle, making sure to touch his hands as long as possible (It was amazing how uncomfortable that made him!) She realized that if she had had her blouse unbuttoned, she would have been showing him quite a bit of cleavage. Would Ren be the type of person to ogle her? No, she decided. Seeing how he reacted to the hand-touching, he's definitely disgusted by someone like her. She had been showing him a comforting smile, but she let that drop. If he was going to be like that, she wouldn't be nice.
" Don't you know Ren? You are as good as my accomplice!" Her tone was light and fluttery, but her face was dark. She made her face look blank, free of that pesky 'remorse'. " I may not have been truthful with you, but hey, that's to be expected! That's what people like me do riiiiiggggghhhhttt? I really do kill only the baddest of the bad! But that's not why i'm hired to kill them. You wanna know the most common reason I'm hired to kill?"
"Because their lovers hurt them! They hire me because their partner dumped them, or lied to them, or did the same silly quirk for twenty years. That's why your my little helper Ren! People like the ones who hire me, like the ones who die by me, don't just find 'love'. They really don't! They don't just bump into somebody and out comes flying a cd for the obscure band they just both happen to like! Nope! They have been convinced by society-and by people like you- that they need love! That they aren't complete human beings without it! So they force themselves to be with someone who can just barely stand them, but eventually that patience runs out. You deal with the people who can't find love. You convince them that there is someone is out there! And they believe. That's YOUR crime. You give them false hope. You set them up to break their hearts, and then I break their heads!" Sumiko gradually went from being the cold killer she started as to someone lit alive with genuine anger. It seemed it was taking everything in her power to not yell, she barely kept herself to harsh whispers. She took a breath to calm down, and went back to her usual sweet tone.
"The only thing people can love is the talents they're born with!" She pointed to herself "Like Snake charming-" and then she pointed to Ren " Or Matchmaking."
She paused for a moment, her eyes growing distant and looking away from Ren. Almost imperceptibly, she breathed out, "...and maybe family."
She looked back to him, grinning like a cat." The thing about it is, you really are my accomplice! You start 'em and I finish 'em! Bwuahahaha-" She cut out mid laugh." The thing about it is, us killers do have morals. We got rules too. And one of the big ones is that you don't kill your own! So you don't have to worry about me, or anyone else for that matter!"
” Don’t tell me your family is so poor you couldn’t research your fellow students? There’s not many students well-dressed and effeminate around here, and as if you could be a Super High School Level Firefighter or Gymnast. I need to make sure I’m not going to school with...
"Pffff...I guess I was generous to look you students up! Clearly none of you are worth it. Aha, I'm not kidding this time." She lifted her eyes and tilted her head, an ominous expression on her face." I guess I'm not being fair, I supposed I just expected Super High School Level behavior from you! It's okay being...average."
She perked back up as he put himself in thinking mode! She turned her chair towards her, showing he had her full attention
For each notch his face fell, hers climbed.
She has a wild grin on her face as he chocked out this timid words. He had reacted just how she had expected: spineless fear. No attempt to take her down. No outraged anger. He didn't even run away. He was deer caught in the headlights, she was glad her instincts were right when she decided to play with him. This guy wouldn't tell a soul.
"Ooooooh don't say it like that Reeeen! Don't say it like I'm the bad guy! That cat is a bad guy, she kills just to kill. That's not a very good strategy, and a promise my moral compass wouldn't allow it! You know, a lot of people would say i'm a good guy. A real anti-hero,like Batman! Don't you like Batman?"
"I only kill people who deserve to be killed! I make sure all the people I kill have done terrible things, and are murderers themselves." She decided to leave out that pesky fact that while what she said was true, the people who hired her in the first place were usually scorned lovers and din't know or care about their lover's past.
"Do you think you've done stuff worth killing Ren? Should I kill you? That's the question I have to ask myself. The streets will fill with baddies if i'm not back out there soon! Do you think your constant misleading of vulnerable people is worth your death? Uwaaaaa? What's that look? Don't you know I'm just kidding?" Her voice had started with a serious tint, one that made anyone in the know shiver. It eventually shifted to a light, joking tone, but it was hard to see what was genuine. The smile she held the entire time didn't help. Maybe she didn't even know if she was joking or not.
After the cats announcement Souda had slid away from the group. Just as promised, brass knuckles sat in his room. Knuckles? He was meant to beat someone to death? How absurd. Stupid little cat was the one to get the beating he thought. God was this for real? No, even if they thought about it the...
Sumiko sighed from her table of one in the corner. It seemed like every hour another one of the other students decided to play leader. The most beautiful flower blooms in adversity, and all that other crap. What a joke. She highly doubted this kid ever saw a body befoe the demonstration. She doubted he had ever been in a life or death situation before, with everyone around a potential enemy.
She wheeled over to him after his announcement felt a little flat. She didn't think anyone had given up their weapons yet(but of course they would, it wouldn't be long before those people saw what humanity was really like.)
She put on a peppy smile and said,"I think I'll be keeping my sword, neh? Someone like me needs the protection! I would lose in hand to hand combat with anyone here! You wouldn't want that right, we've only just met! You haven't had time to fall in love with me yet! Aha ha, just kidding!"
Always give your enemy a false sense of security and in her case, superiority.
"Besides, I used it to chop some branches. It's a bit dented now. I'm way to tired from that to use this thing with deadly force; it'll be days before I could kill!
Or at least, with a sword. Objects requiring force weren't really her thing. It's always good to add kernels of truth to your persona.
