Why is love at first sight okay for straight people but for lesbians it’s “u-hauling”? Why do straight people get to have passionate love stories but for us it’s just “the lesbian urge to merge”? Almost all (I think) of the Pearl-centric episodes have been gut-wrenching and difficult to deal with.
We have Pearl getting stabbed in front of Steven:
Pearl thinking that she’s not strong enough:
Pearl desperately trying to go back to space - after having been on Earth for approximately 5000 years:
Really seeing Pearl’s grief over the loss of Rose, with a LOT of romantic subtext:
And now we have Pearl projecting her own lack of self-worth and reckless heroism onto Connie:
All of the episodes I can think of that focus on Pearl… they actually tell us very little of her past - what she is in Homeworld terms - but focus very heavily on her flaws and difficulties as a character. As a whole they’re not easy to watch or digest (for me at least) and I think that says a lot about Pearl. When you look at her in depth, the neat facade falls apart and she’s a mess, lonely and confused. Everything she valued in herself was really just to do with Rose and her ability to act as protection. Nothing more. In Coach Steven, we even have this line:
“You ain’t nothin’!” - Sugilite
Said as she is physically beaten to the ground by two people she loves. How many times did she hear that, or tell herself that in the past, to then go on to say it to Connie?
Pearl is complicated. She makes a lot of mistakes (and I mean a lot) but she always works to fix them, through actions or words, probably more so than most people would. She fails to deal with her heavy grief for Rose, which is only natural, and the mindset she has lived with for so long. But she’s getting better! I have no doubt that we’ll see Pearl gradually work through all her problems and come out of it stronger. So to those of you hating on her because of Sworn to the Sword: please stop. It turns a beautifully complex and relatable character into a one dimensional ‘bad guy’.
