Here’s the pitch I sent out for Monster Match. Can you believe nobody picked it up?? lol I didn’t keep in the episode ideas here in case I decide to continue the comic. It’s not perfect but man I learned a lot. Anyway, hope it’s a fun read :)

queercoding and queerbaiting
queer history is a long and convoluted subject, mostly owing to the fact that many people hid their queerness in a sense of self preservation, so very few records or memorabilia are around today, and even less are readily available, but one era of queer history still has effects that can be seen today, despite its end in 1968. this was the era of the hays code, which mostly affected films in Hollywood and was by no means limited to portrayals of queerness, and also targeted things such as interracial marriage, immorality, and other things considered to be sinful. however, due to its nature in the media, many of its effects still linger, and there were even new phenomena created after the codes removal that can still be clearly seen in modern culture.
In 1930, Hollywood adopted the hays code, which lasted for about 38 years and regulated what could and couldn’t be in major productions, and was a product of a court case which decided that the government could censor films made in the united states. the code was written by a jesuit catholic priest and author named Daniel A. Lord, but got its name from the then postmaster general Will H. Hays, and layed out a list of things which films should self censor. this list included, but was not limited to; profanity, nudity and implied nudity, white slavery, interracial marriage, ridicule of the clergy, and sex perversion. homosexuality and general queerness fell into this ‘sex perversion’ category, and was, from the period of 1930 to 1968, banned from being in films made in america.
However, once the ban was lifted, queerness was not openly accepted in films and other media, but subtle hints were made in the form of queercoding, which was, and still is, usually used with negative characters such as antagonists or other characters that weren’t supposed to be liked. queercoding is when a writer or creator gives a character traits that are normally attributed to gay people, such as effeminate men or masculine women without explicitly stating their sexuality, which can be done intentionally or unintentionally. one common example of this is ursula from the little mermaid, whos character style was inspired by drag queens, and because of her antagonist standing in the film, there is an implication that drag, and those associated with it, are lacking good character.
this specifically targets gay men, as they are the most involved with drag, but also includes transwomen to an extent, due to drag and transgenderism being easily confused, as well as furthering the stigma that transwomen were men that tricked and swindled people for their ‘malicious intent’.
Another effect of the hays code that is still clearly visible in today’s culture is queerbaiting, which is when a same sex relationship is hinted at, but not shown. this is bad because, when put in contrast with portrayals of straight relationships that are shown instead of implied, it makes same sex relationships seem like they should be hidden, or theyre lesser, not as important. this is significant because it is a signal of shame, and signifies to same sex attracted people that they should be ashamed of who they are and their relationships, and that they should hide themselves and their relationship to their partner because they arent equal to their straight counterparts, are less important, and will not be tolerated in public ways.
however, these things are not always bad, and can be used as a way of representation without inciting anger in those who are stuck in the past. a rather lowly tactic, but sometimes necessary in the context of the continuation of the programming or funding of the film. another way these can be used are to give representation without making a big deal out of it. neither of these is an honourable thing to do, because it discounts people’s experiences and even uses said experiences to profit without ever giving the viewer a payoff, as well as takes away from any progress they might be pushing for.
in summery, the hays code was a large part of recent queer history, which has had affects on our current times, whether its been realized or not. while the code itself was almost objectively flawed and demeaning, but the things that sprang up from it are for debate. however, whether good or bad, for anyone even remotely interesting in queer history, the hays code is a very important event, with lasting, interesting effects.
big. fucking. mood.
