On the 22nd of december, the Secret Santa is revealed, and with a small smile and two boxes in his hands, Clint stands in front of the therapist's door. "Merry early christmas?", he says with a shrug and hands over the boxes.

Connor's eyes light up at the arrival of the tea and cookies.  "Oh goodness!  Th-thank you!"  When he looks up at who's holding them, his eyes grow wide.  "A-a-agent Barton!  I...I didn't anticipate...w-well, what I m-mean is..."  He blushed, hands shaking as he took the gifts.  "Th-thank you!  And a M-merry Christmas to you too!"

Hello dear! ] there's a package laying in front of the therapists door, a small one, wrapped in expensive paper. A card is on it, reading "I hope you're having a wonderful time!". When opened, the package reveals a leather bound journal with a calendar, something useful for you to have. - S.S.

Connor picks up the journal, turning it over in his hands.  The leather cover is smooth and supple, simple in design but tooled with the barest hint of a design in one corner.  Simple, elegant, and perfect.  Smiling, he places it on his desk before returning to work.

Ah...home...on days like today, where many people here, in America, are celebrating with my family...I miss it.

As the thing I was going to respond to was deleted, here's what I was going to say:

In my personal opinion, she [Katy Perry] not celebrating that [the Japanese] culture.  Not in the slightest.  She might think that she is, but given the fact that she's offending others, it isn't, therefore, a celebration.  It is a harmful act.

If someone is offended by something that is said, aren't they being caused harm?  Like, for example, if I step on your toes, I'm supposed to apologize for stepping on your foot, right?  I'm not supposed to say "Well, you shouldn't put your foot there" or "I'm sorry you got hurt, but it's your own fault for being too sensitive".

Also, you cannot compare this and religion.  It's sorta like comparing a grapefruit to a banana.  They share similar qualities (i.e. being a fruit, being yellow on the outside), but overall, they're completely different.  It's the same principle at work here.  In some respects, culture and religion are similar.  They share the idea of processes, rituals, performances, stages, etc.  But the essence, at the very core, is completely different.  You're talking about a religious practice, an institution that is freely chosen.  It does not have racial implications, nor has it been heavily exploited or discriminated against (at least in the case of Christianity).

If someone was also to parody Christianity, Buddhism, or Judaism in the way that Katy has parodied the Japanese culture, I'm more than certain there would be offense.  Becoming a Christian, a Buddhist, or a practicing Jew is different than parodying them just because you like them.

There are many more facets to why this performance is racist, one of them being looking at it from a post-colonial lens.  Asian women gained a stereotype for being quiet, demure, loyal, and pure.  Look at such works as Madame Butterfly and M. Butterfly (which was based off of the original opera).  In both of them, Japanese people are used as a tool.  Madame Butterfly, in particular, focuses on this aspect.  Butterfly, a Japanese woman is taken as a wife by a rich American general.  She gives up everything to marry this general, as marrying a non-Japanese man was a negative practice.  However, in doing so, she does not realize that the general is only marrying her because he adores the IDEA of the Japanese wife.  Of the quiet, demure, loyal, pure wife.  When he returns to America, he takes another wife, and Butterfly is played out as pining over him, eventually committing suicide when she finds out the truth.

The lyrics in Katy's song "Unconditional", combined with the performance that she gave, recreate this almost exactly.  The idea that this woman, portrayed as specifically Japanese, reinforce the idea that Japanese women are exactly as they have been portrayed.  Lookit some of these lyrics: Unconditional, unconditionally I will love you, unconditionally and there is no fear now let go and just be free cause i will love you Unconditionally

Katy is basically saying, throughout this song, that she'll accept whatever from the person (presumably a man) that she is in love with.  She will take whatever they are giving, whoever they are, without asking for anything in return.  She's subservient, willing to take whatever is given.  This, paired with the oversexualized image of the Japanese woman that she gives and that has been portrayed throughout society, reinforces the racist stereotype.

Sooooo....yeah.  Not trying to attack, but just putting my opinion out there.

Katy Perry's racist performance of "Unconditionally" at the American Music Awards

Katy Perry might as well just have been singing “LONG TIIIIIIIIIME I WILL LOVE YOU LONGGGGG TIMMMEEEEEEEEE” and mixing up her L and R sounds. That is how horrendously racist this performance was.

This is absolutely no different than Miley Cyrus’ use of black female bodies in her We Can’t Stop music video and VMAs performance or Lily Allen’s use of black female bodies in her Hard Out Here music video or Selena Gomez’s use of South Asian culture in her Come And Get It music video. All of these videos and performances co-opt aspects of different cultures, cartoonize them, and then marginalize people from those cultures.

I really honestly hope to see every single white feminist who vocally criticized Cyrus and Allen and Gomez out in full force against Katy Perry’s racist AMAs performance as well. Walk the talk.

It is not a coincidence that the messages of Gomez’s Come And Get It and Perry’s Unconditionally are being used in conjunction with Orientalist imagery from Asian cultures. The literal messages from these songs — “when you’re ready come and get it” and “I will love you unconditionally” — are ripe for being used to feed the racist western stereotype that all Asian women are constantly sexually available and willingly subservient to men.

When Perry bows and puts her hands together and cocks her head a little singing “I will love you unconditionally” at the end bit is just the subservient sexual availability of Asian women as it is understood in the west translated into pop choreography. That is what that is.

This song is not an homage to Japanese culture. It is simply an orientalist portrayal of the Greatest Hits of Japanese Culture As (Mis)Understood in the West: there are geisha in vaguely kimono-looking-garments, paper parasols, imagery from the Great Wave off Kanagawa, and a torii. Nothing about it is truly authentic or respectful.

This performance was a trainwreck and Katy Perry is a giant racist.

Going with what I previously ranted about, I think this just about sums up why this is a racist performance.

geisha don't wear kimonos with mandarin collars, thigh-high slits, and cleavage windows. perry's makeup is also nothing like what a maiko or established geisha would wear. geisha preserve traditional japanese artforms. they are skilled performers. they hold esteemed status in japanese society. geisha still exist today. it is out of line to sexualize and trivialize their high position in their society with such a blatantly ignorant performance.

Wow. Some people just always have to hate someone for something. It’s a damn shame.

I would agree with the asker here.  I mean, she's taking a culture that does not belong to her, specifically a part of a culture steeped in significance artistically, and adapting it to her and to suit her needs.  Cultural appropriation is a thing here.  A large, large thing.  I'm very disappointed in Katy for doing what she did.  She may have had "the best of intentions" (though I argue even that point), but she totally crossed a line.

Even if everything had been completely culturally appropriate (proper maiko/established geisha wear, proper ceremonies performed in the proper manner, etc), she is still using it to make money.  She is exploiting another culture to benefit herself.  And that is utterly wrong.

I'm not even going to touch on the sexualized aspects of the performance (the boob windows in particular bother me SO MUCH), but taking an artistic performer such as a geisha, especially one that is so oversexualized already, and reinforcing a stereotype is, in my opinion, a HORRIBLE thing.  Nigh unforgivable sin.
