What I Wish I Knew As a Beginner Witch
We are only a month away from 2020, which will mark my 10th year as a Witch and my 5th as a Pagan. So, it's been a while since I was a beginner. Looking back, here are some things that I wish I had known when I was first starting out, since it would have made things a lot easier for me.
Please know that some of this is my own UPG and is based solely off of my personal experience as a Witch.
☆☆☆°☆☆☆°☆☆☆
1. Many books written on witchcraft contain misinformation about the persecution of witchcraft, conflate cultural practices that are closed and have no connection to each other, and are steeped in society's views of gender and sexuality at the time of their publication. Even today, books still sometimes get published in the Spiritual genre without much fact-checking. So, take what you read with a grain of salt and always do outside research to confirm an author's claim before believing it as truth.
2. There are multiple theories that explain how magic could possibly work, from the Energy Model to the Spirit Model to the Psychological Model. It's okay to take your time to determine which theory or theories you believe to be true.
3. You can learn just as much, if not more, directly working with spirits (ancestors, Fae, ghosts, angels, etc) or deities as you can by reading books.
4. Research is super important and crucial to being a Witch, but if you absorb knowledge but never put it into practice, you may not progress as quickly as you'd like.
5. Ancestor veneration can include more than just your blood ancestors. You can also honor deceased witches, ancient heroes, family friends, activists, and more.
6. Witchcraft is capable of feats far greater than you can imagine.
7. Gods and spirits definitely play favorites, which can either work for or against you depending on who they favor.
8. Gods/spirits know the difference between a devotee being low-energy because of illness/other circumstances and just being lazy.
9. If you're feeling stuck on what to learn next, start looking into family traditions and local folklore/superstitions!
10. Your Craft will shift and grow as you develop as a Witch. How you practice right now probably won't be how you practice 10 years from now, and that's okay! It's okay to be a beginner and not really know what you're doing. Just keep learning, studying, and practicing!
What do you wish you had known when you were a beginner Witch?

Always Look Into The Mundane Before Stating You Have A Spirit Around
Seriously. I’ve seen a post like this before, but it needs to be said again.
Weird Smells? Go get your house inspected. You may have mold or a gas leak in your home.
Cold Spots? Again. Get your home checked out.
Creaking when no one is home? Your house/building is probably shifting. Get it inspected just to be safe.
Sibling or Child saying weird shit? They probably have an imaginary friend or are having fun. If it still freaks you out go to a mental health professional to rule out anything that could be causing them to say creepy-ass things. Better safe than sorry.
Hearing thumps? Check to see if any trees or bushes are hitting your house. Then check to make sure an animal you aren’t aware of isn’t making the noises. If you can’t find a cause, get it checked out by a professional.
Scratching in the walls? It could be a rodent. Get it checked out.
If you have checked all mundane reasons for what is being experienced by you or a relative/friend, then go onto spiritual reasons. You can always cleanse before you get things checked out there’s no harm in that. But to assume it’s always a spirit is dangerous. You could put people at risk especially if it’s rodents, a creaking house, or a gas leak.
Because if it is those reasons then you can easily get it taken care of, but if you actively ignore it because you believe it’s a spirit then it’s all on you, not anyone else.
Spirituality should not replace mundane reasons. Please consider the mundane in your practices.
If you are a worshipper of Earth, dig your heels into the softness of the grass. Smile at every flower you come across, and take a moment to tightly wrap your arms around a favourite tree. Run your fingers gently over a mossy bridge or stone. Hold crystals in your palms, and experience the flow of their natural energies. Water and speak to your plants, and think of how thankful they are for you doing so. You, too are a part of this planet; sharing the soil with the forests and gardens: You are home.
If you are a worshipper of Air, step outside to take the biggest breath that you possibly can. Go on! Now, doesn't that just feel like the most wondrous gift? Let the oxygen fill up your lungs and cleanse your inner spirit. Frolic through a meadow or upon a grassy hill; allow the fresh air to caress your hair and your skin. Wave incense or sage amongst your bedroom, drawing hearts or pentagrams in the air. Whisper your secrets amongst the winds, and let them become entangled amongst this beautiful, invisible force: They are safe within.
If you are a worshipper of Fire, light a candle in a wax shade of your most treasured colour. You are that hue, and that flicker amongst the velvety darkness. Listen to the crackle of a fireplace, and succumb to the melody of its seductive spark. Observe the powerful flames of a bonfire as they dance and twist and come alive against the sky - allow for your spirit to become enticed by a sight as stunning as this. That is your soul: For always, you, too have held such radiance.
If you are a worshipper of Water, replenish. Drink a tall, chilled glass of clean water first thing in the morning. Worship it when it runs down your clothesless body as you take a shower. Submerge your barefeet when you are standing amongst the tides of a sea or lake. Collect river stones, appointing them to be your good-luck charms. Believe that you can hear the calls of the ocean from the seashells, and whisper back. Your soul is a force as natural as the ocean; your spirit just as vast as its depths.

Gotta love this book for things like cursing the weeds in your garden.
