Another pixel art blog

Hi, I'm Duck and I make pixel art as a hobby. I'm going to be dumping a lot of my pixel art here because why the heck not.

I’m setting myself a challenge

Since my university is going to keep me cooped up in my dorm room for most of the next semester, I figured I’d set up a challenge to help me kill some boredom.  I’m going to try to convert the assets from one dead game into the art style of a dead game series. Specifically, I’m going to convert (at least) 268 units from the game Battle Nations, into the art style of the Advance Wars series. Let’s see which breaks first, my mind, my laptop, or my mouse.

Here's the tileset I used for that level. I think these came out pretty well, had a lot of fun while working on it.

Having fun and making stuff again. My first time ever making a platformer level and I think I did pretty well. I need to add some hazards and a background but all in all, this ain't half bad.

I’m continuing to go back and modify some of the sprites I’ve already made so that they better resemble their source material. I haven’t posted the Dragoon before so here’s the new and old versions. This guy was one of my favorite units and I really like the light blue design for his specialist armor.

Of all the units in Battle Nations the one I wanted the most was this little guy, the Humvee and I think I did pretty well on the conversion. I have modified it by making the device on top of the gun look more like a remote camera since there’s no external gunner.

How long was it going to take for me to realize that Advance Wars has a soldier sprite who’s wearing a trench coat. I re-made the Trooper but not all the sprites will receive this treatment.

Unit 5: Arsonist

Deep down, I think the Arsonist just enjoys a nice campfire, even if he has to start it all by himself.

Unit 4: Mortar Team

The first crew served weapon on the list, the mortar team. I think I got this one pretty close to the original, though I gave the second soldier a new job as the radio man.

Unit 3: Grenadier

The last of what I consider Battle Nation’s basic units, the Grenadier. He’s simple man with a simple job, lobbing grenades everywhere he goes. I’ll admit, I deviated somewhat since the small size of the grenade would be hard to distinguish, also,the Grenadier doesn’t have orange shoulder and elbow pads.

Unit 2: Shock Trooper

I’ll admit, I kind of missed the ball here, let hope that isn’t indicative of the rest of my challenge. I should have studied the game art, then I would have noticed that the Shock Trooper’s SMG doesn’t have a stock.

Unit 1: The Trooper

First up is the venerable Trooper, the first unit that all players get access to in Battle Nations. I’ve always liked the Trooper’s design, its simple, just what you want from your standard foot soldier.

What’s this, a new blog?

Hi there, I’m Duck and I’m starting up this little blog as a repository of my pixel art and maybe some other stuff. I don’t know how regular my uploads will be, hopefully I’ll remember every time I make something new.

This isn’t the best but I figured, “I’m a pixel art blog, I should have a pixel art icon.”
