There are layers to this. Earlier in the episode, Xena discovers her secret while they're sharing a locker room. A woman she has got naked with turned out to be trans. It's the exact scenario terfs are always fear-mongering about, but Xena just shrugs it off.

Also, the kiss was a big deal not just because it was gay but because the trans actress was HIV positive. They wanted to show the world that you can't contract HIV just from kissing someone. Bear in mind, the AIDS crisis was still fresh on people's minds in the 90s.

i’m making my way through the mighty nein campaign (on ep72 atm) and Beau’s self awareness is something that’s really stuck out to me so far. she takes herself to be someone who’s difficult and abrasive, but in practice she’s constantly putting the effort in to be better, to make things better. the most obvious example of this is her and Fjord’s promise to tell the other when they’re being an asshole, as well as Fjord always reminding her to be more expressive and clear in her emotions. but she’s also the first to reach out to Caleb when they’re arguing, and she’s usually the first to admit why she got upset (like when they spoke about their conversation after they visited Yussa’s tower). Beau was also the first to really openly say that Yasha’s betrayal hurt so much because of her issues with trust and abandonment, like she just spells it out and admits to that

and all of this is a result of how hard Mollymauk’s death hit her. that was really the catalyst for her realizing who, how, and why she is the way that she is (alongside other things ofc). idk it’s just so interesting how she’s kind of gritting her teeth the entire time, but she’s pursuing self betterment with a remarkable level of determination. i love this part of Beau and i think Marisha Ray plays it impeccably
