Tl;dr how you can personally make Neil Gaiman lose money (and not be a jerk to others.)
I see a lot of folks upset that NG will financially benefit from residual and other compensation surrounding his involvement in the adaptation of Sandman and Good Omens (and he will.) But the answer isnāt ārage at the fans who are so emotionally attached to his blorbos because they grieve differently, and then somehow NG will be financially punished.ā Thatās lower-class/middle-class thinking. NG is too rich and financially diversified to really be hurt by little boycott or a couple of show cancellations (though said cancellations can cause life-changing poverty to the little guys who signed contracts and turned down other opportunities before all of this came out. And boy does NG love women in poverty š¤®)
So if you want to substantially reduce the wealth of someone at NGs financial levelāyou need to do it with professional services fees.
Details below the cut:
The firm that NG has apparently engaged for online reputation management (ORM), called edendale, was once paid for their professional testimony in an unrelated slander lawsuit, which was delivered in the form of report outlining the strategy ORM firms use and just how ludicrously expensive those professional services cost. (credit to horrornobody77 for digging up the report.) Weāre talking hundred of thousands of dollars for a small potatoes case, where NGās could easily get into the millions for ORM and associated legal fees.
Reddit - Dive into anything
Itās not that long of a read, but to summarize the key action items you can take:
-ORMs wait for the discourse to die down because active discourse is much more expensive to counter. Wanna cost NG money? Talk about the accusations over time. Set a quarterly calendar event in your phone to remind yourself to post (and otherwise engage on other peopleās posts) about the Vulture article. This needs to happens for years, so that NG has to pay for more comprehensive ORM and for longer.
-Make discourse that is Google-friendly. Use the words edendale will find concerning (theyāre already running fluff pieces with the terms Neil Gaiman Uncovered to try and bury the similarly named subreddit.) If you just post a link without much comment, itās not gonna be prioritized by search engines. Similarly, if you make a low effort post and then no one else engages with it, itās not going to make it to the top ten search results. Engage with each other, for heavenās sake!
-Donāt let the fluff sit unaddressed. If you see random bot posts sharing NG quotes captioning random fantasy art (probably stolen) with the comments turned on? Respond! Make it hard for the bots to understand your comment but easy for humans. āNice quote! Mega bummer about what NG did, I used to really like him.ā is hard for a bot to auto-delete. āFuck NGā is practically doing the botās autodelete command for it.
-If/when you post fan works for properties strongly related to Neil Gaiman, leave a lil callout in the authors notes. Nothing that will get you sued, just a few words like: āI would definitely personally choose to not ever meet Neil Gaiman at a comic con.ā Maybe throw in a link to your fav tumblr summary.
Anyway, to the person being paid hundred or thousands of dollars per hour by Neil Gaiman for professional servicesāyouāre welcome for the extra billable hours š
Also Edendale sounds like a law firm in a Good Omens legal AU fic, and I canāt believe itās real.
Some bad low-light photos of my weekend project, which was a little Crowley plant hanger. I made it out of polymer clay, which I haven't used since high school (centuries ago), and I'd forgotten how frustrating that stuff is to work with. My kingdom for a 3d printer. I'll call it a proof of concept until I make a better one. I'll try to get better pictures outside during daylight, but it's been very cloudy all month. Anyway.
Honestly it's a crime the Bentley didn't keep the yellow hubcaps. Could you imagine Crowley trying to get rid of them post s2 and the Bentley just like "honestly I'm sick of you two, no, I like the yellow accents and I won't let you forget the angel." And putting them back anytime Crowley vanishes them.
FINALLY! My Ineffable Affirmation cards are here š„¹
They were stuck at the customs like forever š
Look at these beauties! š
The gold stamping was a great idea, the deck looks like a miniature antiquarian book š
Oh, I bet Aziraphale would love to add it to his collection! š
Also I got a lot of questions about a possible reprint of the deck, so I made a google form with an interest check!
If you know someone who might be interested, please share this form š„°
This is an interest check for reprinting Good Omens Affirmation cards!
We need 200 entries to make the reprint possible, so please share th
TV season 1 crowley driving in the burning bentley looking bug eyed and stressed. The colour scheme is Hot- with browns reds and oranges.
The twin pic to this is Aziraphale after discorporation (although this is indeed what i intended, it looks rather more like aziraphale BEING discorporated.) He looks distraught and ethereal. He is slightly see through and not corporeal. The colour scheme is Cold. Cold ultramarines, blues, cold pinks, like frozen air and emptiness.
Just a psa that this blog is reposting other peopleās art without credit and i think we should all just stop reblogging their stolen art posts and block them
dontfuckingbother is another doing the exact same thing! (Not tagged for obvious reasons) I've already blocked them both, but artists please go report your art as stolen if you see it!
Don't repost other people's art without credit. If they are not on Tumblr, use a link to wherever you saw their art, don't just copy and paste it on here. Also, be sure to give their name or username as it appears on the linked site, so that their name appears on your post, preferably before the linked artwork. Always give artists credit for their work, as you would wish to be credited for your own.
To be clear the two blogs mentioned arenāt just doing it āaccidentallyā. Theyāve been told multiple times in comments on their posts to cut this disrespectful behaviour off.
I believe thereās no room for art theft in fandom.
Scorpiosukuna is especially bad, they're passing off stolen art as their own art, specifically tagging it as "my artwork" when a reverse image search reveals most of it as being all over pinterest already. Not that there's ever an "okay" way to repost art, but explicitly passing it off as your own work feels especially icky.
