Should You Use Heat or Ice on that Owie?
It’s an age-old question that every mom and pre-nursing major has a different answer for, but who’s right? Short Answer: Shaquille O’Neil. Both ice and heat can be just what you need depending on the type of injury. Here’s a few examples.
Use ice to fix that boo boo if it’s fresh. Ice is great for fighting inflammation due to sprains or pulls. Also, use ice on a wound that feels warm, as it may be a sign of infection and heat might make it worse.
Use heat on sore muscles and injuries that are a little older. After a few days, the inflammation should have dissipated and a nice hot shower can help your blood get flowing, which promotes healing.

Since you, the cyclist, are infinitely more vulnerable in these situations, it will likely fall to you to diffuse the situation. Here are some tips for how to deal with an angry driver.
• Make a mental note of their license plate number
• Be sure to always follow bicycle laws to avoid giving them ammunition
• Don’t try to change their minds about cyclists on the road
• Be friendly, it will confuse the angry driver if you’re really nice
• Don’t be too proud to flee the scene
A driver that stops to get out of their car or roll their window down and spew insults at you should not be counted as a rational person. Always be on the lookout for these types of people, and do your best to not escalate the situation.
Determining Liability in Bicycle Accidents
A bicycle is legally considered to be a vehicle on the same level as a motorcycle or a car, meaning that it must obey the same traffic laws as everyone else. Assuming that you are not violating any bicycle traffic laws at the time of the accident, it is very likely that a driver who hits you will be found liable.
For example, the driver could likely be found at fault in the following hypothetical situations:
• A driver makes a left-turn into the path of an oncoming cyclist.
• A driver approaches too fast and rear-ends a rider.
• A driver pulls out past a stop sign and into the path of a cyclist.
• A driver changes lanes, turning directly into a rider.
• A driver pulls out of a driveway or parking lot into a cyclist.
Liability in car to bike accidents, as with almost any other accident, really comes down to right-of-way. Whoever did not have right-of-way at the time of the accident is the one that should be fronting the bill.

· Saddlebag – These handy bags fit perfectly under the seat on a bicycle and offer some much appreciated storage space. They’re great for holding phones, keys, wallets, etc.
· Quality Bike Lock – Any cyclist you ask that’s been in the game a while will have a story involving a stolen bike or front wheel. Bikes are a very popular item among thieves, so a decent bike lock will go a long way.

4 Tips for Treating Road Rash
Cycling accidents are sometimes unavoidable. Even the softest crashes can have intensely painful consequences. Road rash, for example, can be a seemingly non-serious injury in comparison with others, but if not treated correctly it can be very painful and dangerous.
How to Treat Road Rash
· Washing – The first thing you should do is immediately wash off the wound with clean drinking water.
· Dressing – Depending on the depth of the wound, there are three different ways to approach dressing the injury. Read our blog for more info on dressing the wound.
· Monitor – Your road rash should be getting less painful and swelling should be subsiding more and more each day. If this is not the case, and the pain is worsening or you notice increased swelling or redness, then you may have an infection.
· Scarring – Anytime your skin is torn, there is a risk of scarring. To reduce the risk as much as possible, regularly moisturize the wound after the initial healing process
A Cyclist Hit a Runner and Was Awarded $300,000
A cyclist was recently awarded $300,000 after filing a lawsuit against the runner that she hit. While you may be inclined to believe that the cyclist would be at fault for hitting the runner, a jury unanimously agreed the opposite was true.
The cyclist was riding behind the runner who turned into her path suddenly just as she was about to pass him. The cyclist was thrown from her bicycle and sustained multiple injuries including a brain injury that caused some amnesia.
The runner, who was not seriously hurt, claimed that the cyclist issued no warning that she was about to pass, and that he could not hear her approaching from behind. A mutual friend of both the plaintiff and defendant testified that the cyclist always shouts “to the left” when passing someone on the trail.
The damages awarded were for lost wages and medical expenses related to the accident as well as for the cyclist’s “bodily injuries and their effect on her health, her physical pain and mental anguish, her humiliation and embarrassment, and her inconvenience.”
