every other word that came from her lips was capturing nathan’s attention more and more. he was absolutely loving the spunk she had, not to mention, she seemed to be one of the few who were able to keep up with his personality. “oooh. i’m shivering with anticipation,” he teases in return, a playful smile spreading across his lips. as she begins to speak again, telling him her thoughts on getting to know people, nathan can’t help but raise his eyebrows in surprise at every other word she said. it was as if she had been burned way too many times by strangers in her life, perhaps even people she might’ve considered friends, and he couldn’t help but shake his head a little at the thought of someone doing that to her. “yeah, people can be right assholes. lucky for you, i happen to be an asshole who is upfront about it. you’ll never be surprised with shit about me because i’m pretty open about almost anything about myself, though i keep anything anyone else shares with me locked far in the corners of my mind. even if it’s something small, like someone’s favorite type of coffee or pizza.” he only partially lied, unintentionally, because the only thing he wasn’t honest with was his little habit. partially because he was ashamed to admit he could have a problem and another part because it was nice to have a fresh start with someone for once. as the conversation switched over to anthony, nathan’s mind drifted from his thoughts, he found himself smiling a bit more. “ah. well, hey, if you ever find yourself in conversation with the guy, i assure you he doesn’t disappoint. to me, he’s the kind of energy this twisted, fucked up world needs. well, in my opinion anyway.” and it was true, wasn’t it nice to have someone still smiling and attempting to bring a niceness to the world even when the darkest of times were trying to bring them all down?
her comment about hunter catches his attention if only because he had never really spoken to the guy, and now knowing he had friends like mariposa in his life, he was starting to think he was missing out in not approaching him. “hey, you never know, maybe hunter wants to also get high on company time.” he joked, shaking his head, “on second thought, that’s probably so far from the truth. let’s just keep this our little secret, hm?” why not add another secret to the hotel’s walls? only this time, it was at least, in his opinion, a good secret to keep. switching their conversation over to his comment about punching a paparazzi, hearing her soft giggle, brought a genuine smile to his face. maybe he was a little proud to have been the reason she was giggling, or at least amused, by anything he was saying. if anything, he hoped to leave her today with forming some sort of friendship, even if it was just the ‘smoking randomly on the roof of the hotel’ type of friendship, she was someone he wanted to keep in his life for many more days, even years, to come. it was amusing to him how quickly she had gained a special spot in his mind and they hadn’t even known each other for longer than an hour, maybe creeping on to thirty minutes now. “i’ll keep that in mind,” he replies, about her fight comment, returning the soft smile.
an amused laugh comes from him at the comment about morning people, giving her a nod of agreement. he never did understand how some people could be such morning birds nor does he think he ever will. “i look forward to it, mariposa. what’s your favorite pastry to have with coffee? i’ll make sure to have one ready for you, on the house of course.” as the comment about the meaning of his name is made, he can’t help it, he lets out another groan, “oh, god. please don’t tell me that’s what my name actually means,” he says, an amused snort coming from him. “my parents were some comedians naming me nathan, assuming they knew the meaning behind the name,” he comments, shaking his head a little, playfully rolling his eyes.
now that they were on the roof it almost felt as if he had left any weight of the world down in the alley, it was refreshing. he looks over at her when she mentions munchies, chuckling, “i feel that. they’re going to be so confused when i get back to the cafe and end up buying a couple of pastries and chowing them down. especially when i am sure they assume i am out eating somewhere right now.” he laughs, shrugging a bit. his gaze falls to the lighter, “yeah, it is pretty fitting, but…it’d be better off with you, don’t you think?” he gently tucks the lighter in her hand before taking his spot next to her, leaning his head back to rest against the wall, looking up at the sky as they spoke. “oh, absolutely, that’s exactly what i am saying. i hope you don’t mind. maybe our next adventure up here can be when i am off the clock? i’ll have snacks ready, maybe a large pizza. would you be cool with having more adventures together?”
it was like nathan was a breath of fresh air. he seem so carefree and like nothing could ruin his good spirits. there was just something intreging from him and it was like he was pulling her in. maybe it was the idea of getting high with a stranger that doesn’t know much about you and just blabbing on about nothing and everything. maybe it’s the way she knows that he wouldn’t judge her, he never gave off that impression at all within their short moments of talking to one another. “oh, so you’re planning on double crossing me?” she gasps playfully, shaking her head at the other. “you’re a dead man,” she jokes. mariposa had been used and mistreated by people all her life, which was why her trust upon people changed within her growing up. “so, you just admit to people that you’re an asshole?” she inquires, eyebrows scrunched slightly as she burst out into laughter. “mm, lucky me. you have no idea how many times i’ve heard that.” she sends him a tiny smile. many people informed her that they’ll kept her secrets a secret, but half of them failed to do so, always opening their mouths to someone. “yeah, there’s a lot of dark in the world,” she nods her head, maybe it wouldn’t be too bad that there were a few nice ones, although she felt that they could be easily manipulated.
his words caused laughter to erupt inside of her as she shakes her head. “i swear hunter is like a little goody goody boy who wants to ensure that everyone and everything is fine. i don’t think he would do that during company’s time.” it was true though, hunter was a hard worker. there was just a character that was in him that brought comfort to everyone he encounters. mariposa swears he’s like magical. “now we’re having secrets upon us? i don’t know about you, but this is starting to sound like a bad idea,” she was teasing once more, matter in fact she liked where things were going and glad that there was some sort of friendship forming between the two, if she can even call it that.
she glances over towards him and shrugs her shoulders. “i don’t really eat pastries with my coffee. i normally just survive on my coffee. what do you recommend, y’know since you’re totally the king of coffee.” she exaggerates, trying to hold back a chuckle. “well, that’s what it means in hebrew. you were sent from above, heaven sent.” she wiggles her eyebrows teasingly with the biggest grin across her lips.
“eh, your coworkers can mind their own business. at least you’re paying for it instead of just taking it.” she reasons, taking another puff of the light up joint before extending it over towards him once again. “i don’t know about that, but i promise i’ll guard it with my life.” mariposa states, eyes falling towards the lighter as her thumb traces along the side. warm smile across her lip as she did so. shrugging her shoulders, her deep brown eyes fell upon the others face. “sure? why not?”
