Among several robotic spiritual communities on Dukkido, you'll commonly hear them refer to themselves as "God's Grandchildren". For some it is a matter of shorthand and for others, an integral part of their belief systems. Whereas God placed human souls in filthy, fragile bodies, with brains beset by doubt and sin, the robotic souls were spoiled silly: no skin to pierce, no bones to break, no brain to mislead.
For human worshippers, martyrdom is the ultimate display of bravery and faith. It is an honor afforded only the truest and noblest of believers. For robots, martyrdom is easy. They never really had a life to begin with.
The flying saucer. On our world, seeing such a strange contraption hovering around would be cause for great confusion. On Dukkido, it's only a cause for concern. The creatures piloting these vessels are much more comfortable flying around openly here, but they're still up to quite a few of their old tricks, preferring much to deal with their enemies from the insides of their cozy little discs, rather than the frontal warfare that's preferred by most of the planets other inhabitants.
An atmospheric make-up quite unlike the one we have here on Earth, twists and bends the light shining unto Dukkido into a pink hue. A more stable society would be abound with those trying to figure out what, exactly, is to blame for the various unusual colours one might see in the Dukkido sky. Right now, however, the soldier couldn't care less about the colour of it. Until the day comes when the enemy marches over that horizon line, all is well in his world.
As technology progressed, killing implements began to ask more and more from the killers in question. On Dukkido, soldiers accustomed to their weapons asking no more of them than a few occasional minutes with a whetstone, might find themselves burdened with the endless maintenance and reloading of guns and ammo. And although time is the most valuable resource of all, it doesn't run out as easily as something like gunpowder or gasoline. A 50-ton machine of hellfire and death sounds like a wonderful thing to have on your side, until you have to carry it on your back.
The balances of military power on Dukkido are largely dictated by numbers, rather than by the individual strengths of a few leaders and operatives. Ready and willing soldiers tend to take up arms, not out of inspiration or ideology, but out of fear. For some, this is a new and scary place, full of unknown dangers hidden in darkness. Those who have been here longer, start to see that their fears are better reserved for the things that happen in the light. The unknown becomes a comfort, all the world's boogeymen and demons are much preferable to a life spent in service of mere survival.
Great strategists, exemplary specialists, inspiring point men and formidable warriors. Individual excellence, in all of these cases, is based on a foundation of fearlessness. It's hard to tell, when looking in the eyes of the odd gun-for-hire, whether her confidence is derived from naivete or talent, but regardless, she leads a much happier existence than her more serfish colleagues, so she must be doing something right.
The seas of Dukkido are few, far and in between. As such, few factions choose to commission a naval force, and those who do soon find more worthwhile ways to use their resources. Among those stranded on this planet, there are a fair few men who would've been among our planet's great admirals and seamen, but here are reduced to lower officers and cannon fodder. If you go out by the coast, you'll sometimes notice them staring out, wistfully dreaming of the high seas of home. But the seas of Dukkido are always low.
There are definitely more fortunate figures on Dukkido than the simple rifleman. There are some, accustomed to aristocracy and power in the old world, who've been lucky enough to find themselves at a relative level of comfort and luxury here. There are even others who've attained stations considerably higher than they could have ever prayed for back home. The riflemen see no need to enrich themselves, to grasp at power or to safeguard it with tooth or nail. They are satisfied camped out in a dry field, picking off the occasional confused cavemen from a safe distance, passing all their free time in tedious bliss. It is not out of cruelty or simple-mindedness that they see this post as a great privilege; it's the knowledge that posted by the nation's other border, they would be the cavemen.
Dukkido is crawling with beings that would likely illicit a crisis of faith for any of us back here on Earth. Creatures of myth and legend openly walk among the squabble, and while it is a matter of great honor for a knight to ride into battle on a mighty dragon, even these are not so uncommon that most peasants haven't seen a few in their lifetime. On Dukkido, no one has the luxury of hiding away in attics or deep fairy tale forests, fae or not. Here, every day is a fight for survival and you'd have to be a very foolish nisse to simply sit back and expect your porridge to be given to you.
On Dukkido, construction is rarely sophisticated. The vast majority of denizens who can claim knowledge of this field much prefer to raise catapults and siege towers. After all, why build a castle when you can simply take one?
In spite of all this, you will still find marvels worthy of the highest emperors and the grandest viziers. Fortifications like the one pictured above are plastered with the trademarks and traces of the multitudes of cultures who've occupied it in the past. Any military leader would be able see the strategic value in such a holding, but only the great recognize the true reward: etching your name beside the chosen few who've made this bastion their own.
On Dukkido, you will find many tyrants. Men who use their vast military forces to whatever they want to the lands and the people in them. Fortunately, not all soldiers prefer to march to the loudest drum. Many instead choose silence; to strike at Goliath with precision and guile, and then slip back into shadows, all for those who can not do so themselves.
It's quite common, on Dukkido, for soldiers to decorate their armour with objects of personal significance. Many of the greatest armies on this planet have low standards for uniformity, as it is too bothersome to acquire large enough amounts of the necessary materials to equip an entire army with matching outfits. Instead, the more ambitious members of these armies choose to adorn themselves in vibrant colours and unusual headwear in order to catch the eyes of their superior officers. A snazzy accessory might just mean the difference between getting that promotion or dying as a foot-soldier in a muddy ditch.
This little round fellow might look simple, but he is equipped with enough martial prowess to prove a deadly enemy on the battlefield. This type of design is typical of the world of Dukkido, as efficient use of materials is king. Of course, sometimes the best use of your materials is the kind of fine adornments you can find on many of the more prideful robots on the planet.
A brave general presents his troops to you. On Dukkido, soldiers come in all shapes and sizes, and a picky commander won't last long. Military victory comes from doing your best with what is handed to you, and in this wretched place, military victory is everything.
For as long as there has been people on Dukkido, they have been trying to recapture the wonders and comforts of their homelands. Pictured above is the result of one of these efforts where, after generations of hard work and scientific experimentation, the esteemed Gruënhoße family finally managed to recreate a delightfully refreshing contraption that the founder of the house often spoke of from his youth.
For many soldiers of Dukkido, there are few pleasures greater than the pride of having struck down an enemy army. Pictured above is a general enjoying said pride, looking out over a territory that will soon be counted among her own plentiful lands.
