This room is almost identical to the one in Attack of the sexually frustrated monster who just happens to be tragically misunderstood. The only difference is that the tables aren’t plastered with blood and there are substantially less doodads and whir-hickeys. If Delira didn’t know her personally she’d say that Kamika was a mad scientist. No, that’s not right. Delira is 100% convinced Kamika is a mad scientist. She’s just the sensible type that doesn’t make giant planet eating super colossi.

The basket is quickly filled with Delira’s belongings and the makeshift opera-coon soon houses Delira herself. The cushions are an interesting sensation but Delira has grown accustomed to them. They’re much better than the cold hard table she had to experience during her – Delira snaps mewls in pain just from remembering. She starts to shiver violently for a few seconds. As soon as she snaps back she starts to stutter “No, nu.” she shakes her head “No, I’m fine. Let’s just do this. Pl-lease.”

You thought things had been going so well, with tea and distractions, light hearted jabs to set a nice and welcoming atmosphere, but it didn’t work. You wince when Delira mewls, and finish as fast as you dare, scrubbing under water so hot that your hands are flushed teal by the end of it. Nothing left for it but to get this over as fast as possible. You put on your coat, flatten your hair under a cap, snap on your gloves, and take a deep breath, filling yourself with resolve for the next part. It’s never pretty. You snap on the surgical mask grub, sealing it around your mouth and nose for protection, and approach Delira.

Keeping still during these procedures had always been a pain in the ass. Delira had to fight off every urge that made her want to punch Kamika in her toothy face. On the bright side, time had afforded her enough experience to know how to handle this. The sedatives helped, not just in numbing the pain but in helping her mind wander. She found that time passed quicker when she wasn’t waiting for the head splitting pain to subside.

Fighting against the urge to scrub fast to get over this part, you carefully move your swab in soft circles around the edges of the broken horn, and circle in to the more tender inside, wincing in advance to each touch. You reach out with one hand for the cleaned tweezers you set ahead of time, and carefully start pulling out any debris you can find, until you expose the core.

Eurgh.

Switching swabs, you rinse again and move to carefully pat around the tender veins, hyper aware of each minute movement and the muffled breath of your friend, even as you try and focus on your friend.

Step four: observe and write down observations.

Lack of necrotic veins or tissue - check. Regeneration of chitin and horn matter - check. You can see little scales where the newer, softer covering is continually worn down by the exposure to the elements. Swollen core around an important horn vein - aw fuck, that does not look good. You might have to take a sample. You prod at the mass experimentally to try and determine where to collect and - 

You rush back to grab the buck- the non-reproductively linked cylindrical liquid container - and hand it to your friend in time for her to rip off the mask - fuck fuck why did you think it would be a good idea to eat before, but this soporific shouldn’t be causing nausea and it probably is just the whole being poked in the horn and - watch her puke into a bucket.

You gag as you try to stare anywhere but the bu - cylindrical liquid container - and then force yourself to take a few big breaths to force the rising gorge down. You are fine. You are miss put together, you can cut through all sorts of beasts and harvest any sort of liquid for them, a little puke is nowhere near enough to make you lose your lunch...

You interrupt your monologue to catch Delira as she slowly topples back, and grab the container before it falls over and christens your floor with Delira gut juice.

There is a downright pornographic slosh from the bucket.

Step 5: Collect a sample

Somehow, you manage to grab a syringe, stick it in the swollen mass to draw a blood and pus sample, and to use a scalpel to cut out a little piece a bit higher up.

You finish the operation by practically dousing everything with disinfectant.

Then it is just a question of papping a sopor patch on Delira’s arm, position her more comfortably, and carefully set the temporary “cage” around the horn to protect it from anything. Mostly from hurting from a stray gust.

You finish by emptying the bucket in the biological waste disposal unit, disinfecting it while barely looking at it, and cleaning up.

You will probably not be having dinner later.

“Probably a mix of both, good caves only do so well if they don’t have a great food source”. Nodding in agreement at the agreeable troll, you turn back to unpacking as you gnaw on your jerky. What jerky was this again? Probably quackbeast.

Three hours later, your boots and pants are covered in mud, you still haven’t found an appropriate valley or wooded copse, and to make it worse, it is starting to rain.

It is going to be so, so effing cold.

You turn to help Imatta up the latest slope, aware that most trolls aren’t used to climb up mountains.  “Shelter! We need to find shelter, an incline, fast!”. The lack of trees don’t help at all, but you look up, searching, and notice a dark shadow that could be a cave, and if not, has a slab of rock and a slant that should be easy to pin a sheet for a temporary shelter, and give them enough breathing space to put up something more solid. You scramble up, feeling the cold drops fall down on the skin of your hands and neck, and the rocks grow slippery under your feet.

Despite the last few days being nothing but hiking up the rocky terrain, you still struggle a little with the sleeper slopes, & are immediately thankful for Kami’s help.

You nod at Kami’s exclamation, looking around the area before the tealblood spots what could be adequate shelter. Though a little more dignified in your own scrambling, you keep a few paces behind the other troll to help her just in case the wet rocks cause her to slip.

Thankfully, that doesn’t happen as the two of you reach the shadow she’d spotted. It seems to be a smaller cave, with no discernible signs that a wild beast or choler-wolf was taking advantage of it’s protection. Which you were grateful for, as the rain was now starting to get much heavier and colder.

You sigh, before leaning against the cave wall and wiping the raindrops off your glasses. “Hm. Think this will be much of a setback to our little excursion? We might lose the majority of the pack’s tracks, after all.“

You squeeze the rain out of your hair, grinning a bit now that you are safely ensconced in shelter. Not so bad after all. Still, you shrug at the yellowblood’s question.

“It might, it might not. They’re more resistant to rain than we are, but they wouldn’t want to deal with it in these temperatures either, so they’re likely huddling in a similar cave or under another shelter. It might even help us pick tracks after the rain stops, as any bit of muddy prints or disturbances will be easier to see and time, but I’m not a good tracker. I only ever picked the basics up”.

The wind getting in through the entrance isn’t bad, but you realize with a pang that Imatta is warmerblooded, and probably feeling colder than you. You start hustling her inside, simultaneously trying to decide whether it would be worth to set up your tent again or if you should just stick to blankets. Ten meters in, though, you stop, and lift your head around as you sniff. “Do you smell... something a bit musky?”

The wide rectangular room you use for the genetic manipulation is wide with a low ceiling, strongly lit, and squeaky clean. In one corner, a thermal hull hums with your preserved samples, a grubtop running a screensaver of a gambolling witherbeastlarvae next to it. Several pieces of biotech have been covered with plastic sheeting for protection, but one inorganic thermal cycler that cost you a pretty ceager whines as it continues the PCR cycle you set for amplification.

Two wide tables have been pushed clear of the center, and in its place is your attempt at an operating-coon, a repurposed shallow recuperacoon. Instead of the typical expensive gel, you’ve placed cushions. You’ll burn them after this check up.

You take your sweater off and fold it onto a side counter, where you’ve put a basket for Deli’s things. “It’s time for scrub up!” you say, approaching the sink and starting the first wash-up and disinfection round.

Step one: provide protection against further infection vectors. You snap an identical mask over Delira’s mouth and nose, listen and check for the click and whirr of the grub’s filter before moving on. Step two: immobilize patient to avoid jostling and injury. You don’t do this part. (You both tried that part a sweep ago and it had been terrible it was not allowed anymore). Instead, you try the optional step: a sedative.

You don’t have the skills to make a good sedative, and the risk of injecting too much, too fast is too great. Instead of shopping for general anesthesia - out of reach for a teal not registered in medicerator training - among your black market contacts (too unreliable, too expensive, and probably cut with other substances), you make do. You inject a simple, general soporific.

Step three: clean and sterilize the surrounding area. “I’m going to clean it now” you say, voice muffled and garbled by your grubmask, and you bring the gauze you soaked in chlorhexidin to the exposed and jagged edge of her horn, wincing in advance.

“Delira”, you lean forwards a bit, unconsciously mirroring your friend and meeting her gaze straight on. “You will be my priority. I will not abandon you to the ravages of social interaction.”

You keep the gaze for a second or two longer, then nod and sit up more deliberately and controlled than you usually do. “How about we discuss the plans after we finish the check up? Considering that you will probably have to stay overday, we will have plenty of time for that, and braiding our hair and talking about troll Lenin”.

After a bit she finally straightens up and takes a deep breath. Her eyes roll back into her head and her brow hangs low. She refuses to make any more eye contact with Kamika. “Fine, I’ll go” she says in defeat, “but you’ve got to find me a fake horn to cover up my broken one.” The thought of the check up makes Delira a bit nervous. She lightly touches her broken horn before standing up. “Let’s just get this over with.”

“You don’t HAVE to go, obviously, but it would be fun, and I think it would be better than your maudlin observations of insignificance. Maybe the music will be an appropriate soundtrack for existentialism and inspire you to greater depths of contemplation!” Plus, you haven’t seen Llawar in a while and you want someone to accompany you so you don’t make a fool of yourself.

“There will be fancy foooood” you wheedle, though you really aren’t sure. But maybe. Citlal might have a reception before or after the concert.

Delira lightly licked her lips trying to imagine what sort of treats these blue bloods would be serving. She starts to bite the bottom of her lip as her gaze shifts to the right, away from Kamika’s toothy smile, in an attempt to focus.

She leaned over the table again and tries to grab Kamika’s hands but settles on leaving them just a few feet in front of the troll. She sheds the sarcasm and insincerity and with unwavering eye contact asks “Are you absolutely sure you won’t abandon me during this concert?”

There was a slight delay to Delira’s response. She shifted her weight to the side and cleverly scratched the bridge of her nose to hide her embarrassed smile. She takes a few seconds to remind herself that Kamika is laughing with her and not at her. When the laughter subsides Delira straightens herself and tugs the front of her blouse. Her eyes wander away as she tries to remember Llawar.

Delira gets an “i just had an idea” grin when she remembers the boy. Her eyes glaze over lightly as she leans over the table. “You know,” Delira pointed out behind glazed eyes, “for someone who claims they won’t be getting down and dirty at first block you sure are mentioning make outs a lot. To be a hundred percent honest I was only teasing but after that shameless display I’m starting to think you might actually have some unresolved feelings. In fact. I say you ditch me entirely and go all by your lonesome. Don’t worry I’ll be completely fine spending my night by myself. You know. I’m now one hundred percent over not being invited to this concert. Maybe even a little happy.”

There’s a small pause of silence where looks are exchanged. Delira shuffles her tea around and clears up a large part of the table. She then leans forward, extends her hands across the table, and proceeds to face plant the table. After a long and tired “uuuuuugh” she finally speaks out “Do I have to go? I don’t want to go. Let’s just hang out here and contemplate the vast emptiness of the universe. We can braid each others hair while discussing Troll Lenin’s theories on the depressing weight of the Condesce’s monarchy.”

... the “ugh” merits some sort of punishment, so you flick the back of her head for being a fussypot. You also make a face at the mention of Troll Lenin.

“You don’t HAVE to go, obviously, but it would be fun, and I think it would be better than your maudlin observations of insignificance. Maybe the music will be an appropriate soundtrack for existentialism and inspire you to greater depths of contemplation!” Plus, you haven’t seen Llawar in a while and you want someone to accompany you so you don’t make a fool of yourself.

The mention of keratinchips makes Delira’s mouth water and her attention span shrink. It’s only for a second but with Kamika a second is an awful lot. So by the time she was back into the conversation, wiping a bit of drool from her mouth, she was already lost. These conversations always leave her so disoriented; like a grub in the brood caves. Except instead of being in mortal danger you are danger of a social faux pas. To be fair, Delira would much rather the mortal danger.

Coatl? Delira’s heard this name before but she can’t quite put your finger on it. It must be another troll Kamika is foolishly paling. “I don’t really know about any of that.” Delira start to anxiously stir your tea, “three isn’t exactly very safe when one of them could be a crazed axe murderer. No, that’s not right. You can’t murder axes. A crazy axe murderer? An axe crazy murder! That’s the one.”

You burst out laughing, almost spilling your tea; you could never make these things up, there is no replacement for Delira. You try to shake your head, but the giggles are too strong and you end up gasping in between talking.

“Hk-heeeeheeheeee no! No axe murd- axe murd…FFFHAHAHAHAHA”

It takes you a few more seconds of intense shaking before you calm down. “No, silly, Llawar is my friend, remember I told you about him? He’s no axe murderer. And we’d be under the protection of nobility! You really should come!!”

You put down your cup and smile a bit more shyly at her. It would be so nice to take advantage of this spate of good luck and get Deli out before the inevitable downturn comes back.

There was a slight delay to Delira’s response. She shifted her weight to the side and cleverly scratched the bridge of her nose to hide her embarrassed smile. She takes a few seconds to remind herself that Kamika is laughing with her and not at her. When the laughter subsides Delira straightens herself and tugs the front of her blouse. Her eyes wander away as she tries to remember Llawar.

Delira gets an “i just had an idea” grin when she remembers the boy. Her eyes glaze over lightly as she leans over the table. Kami, while used to waking up early out of necessity, had never been an early evening troll. She had grumpily gotten out at late sunset, the light still bright and uncomfortable but bearable with some tinted goggles, and run the basic perimeter inspection. The terrain had become more treacherous, as they slowly climbed up into increasingly craggy landscape, but she had yet to see the many lakes and rivulets that would indicate they were at a proper whelping spot. It was tiring work, and for all that she was used to long jaunts like this, so Kamika was still blinking blearily when Imatta emerged, perched on a particular tall rock spur as she drank her thermos of tea.

“Good evening ‘Mati. They went back to their last kill to scavenge the remains, so I think they’ll be moving soon. It might be worth breaking camp in preparation and see if we can scavenge something else myself.”

She hopped down from her spur, humming a greeting to the nearest millipede porcupine, and cracked a yawn upon reaching stable ground. “I think we are close to the dens, myself. Much higher, and it will be too cold to raise pups, which is good as the increasingly rocky terrain will make it harder to track them”.

She waved a hand northwest, to where the mountain range reached high into dark, massing clouds, before sipping from her thermos again. “I think eating morning dry rations quickly. I think it might rain, so I think we should try and make good time and avoid cooking.”

“Hm. Yes, those mountains do look a bit too harsh to raise any young. Perhaps they’ve found suitable caves, or a small valley somewhere close by?” It wasn’t too improbable. The mountains didn’t seem to be growing any sort of vegetation that would beckon the prey that the wolves were partial to, so they might’ve gotten lucky a little further away.

Imatta takes some dried meat that she and Kami had brought with them, looking up at the cloudy sky. “Understood.” She lets one of the more curious millipedes get a quick sniff of her hand, before it scurried off to the others.

“Hopefully the rain won’t turn to snow, seeing how chilly it is around here.” The last thing they needed was to lose the white animals in a freak snowstorm. That was always the trouble with having so many pale-colored beasts on this planet.

“Probably a mix of both, good caves only do so well if they don’t have a great food source”. Nodding in agreement at the agreeable troll, you turn back to unpacking as you gnaw on your jerky. What jerky was this again? Probably quackbeast.

Three hours later, your boots and pants are covered in mud, you still haven’t found an appropriate valley or wooded copse, and to make it worse, it is starting to rain.

It is going to be so, so effing cold.

You turn to help Imatta up the latest slope, aware that most trolls aren’t used to climb up mountains.  “Shelter! We need to find shelter, an incline, fast!”. The lack of trees don’t help at all, but you look up, searching, and notice a dark shadow that could be a cave, and if not, has a slab of rock and a slant that should be easy to pin a sheet for a temporary shelter, and give them enough breathing space to put up something more solid. You scramble up, feeling the cold drops fall down on the skin of your hands and neck, and the rocks grow slippery under your feet.

I swear Kamika’s grin is contagious because Delira grew one just like it the minute she saw her burst through those doors. She might have burst a little too fast, though, because she’s not showing any signs of slowing down. Delira swiftly braces herself for what years of “education by example” has taught her to be “what an attack looks like”. She isn’t very surprised to see that Kamika was aiming for hugs instead of assault but Delira’s still a little shaken up. It takes some warming up but Delira manages to return the hug. It’s a bit hard given that she’s buried under a big fluffy coat. It’s a bit of a tender moment. Well, it would be if Kamika’s lusus didn’t keep licking Delira’s hair.

Delira promised herself she wouldn’t fall in diamonds with this girl but she’s making it so gosh darn hard right now. She’s way too good at this for her own good. There’s a bit of a shuffle as the two of them try to walk while hugging. Success is a bit varied, of course, but hey they managed to get in the door! So hooray for progress. Delira was waiting for Kamika to let go so she could finally take off her coat but NOPE downstairs she goes! She tries her best to say “I’d love some tea” but it’s only when she’s taking off her coat to sit down at the table that she gets the chance to say it. By then Kamika’s already exiting the room, going to a different room, getting the tea, coming back, asking questions, leaving before Delira can answer, then coming back to ask that question again

Delira tries her best to make some pleasant chit chats in the moments when Kamika is in the room but it’s only when tea is served and they are both sitting down that they can finally talk.  “It’s great to see you again, Kamika! I was in such a hurry to get ready I didn’t ask you how your day was before coming here. So, uhm. Hah, well how was your day?”

It always was this way with Delira - she had to get used to people a lot more than other trolls! Silly goatmom, taking her so far up.

When they sat down to finally enjoy and relax a bit, Kami’s smile flickered a bit at the question before returning with full force. “Oh please, it is the same old, a thinkpan that is too busy running around with thoughts means that I don’t always get a lot of sleep. I’ve been mostly going over a few things before setting up for a few new projects - I’ve managed to collect enough samples for a few new possible critters”. Kami leant forwards and winked conspiratorially, “I might even be able to finangle a client to send over those keratinchips you like so much, crunch crunch”. One claw tapped her mug erratically as she interrupted herself to breathe in with gusto the steam, and then took a sip of her tea. “Besides, I haven’t seen you get out from your hive in a while and warmer climate will do you well, you should totally come see things with me sometime, I’m sure that Ms. Coatl’s concert would be fun, and it’s easier to get around if we go together. Maybe get Llawar to come with us to make a midblood trio of safety!”

She finished by tilting her head to the side and giving her signature wiiiide, toothy grin.

You know it might just be the clumps of slime sloshing down your face and body but you’re starting to think a bath is a really good idea. It seems like a lot of work, though, and you aren’t sure you want to do that much work. That much work sounds like a lot of work. You don’t want to work. You ponder cancelling before you get another light migraine. Yeah, cancelling isn’t the best idea. You catch a glimpse of yourself through the mirror on the way to the washroom. God, you’re hideous.

It’s incredible what two hours can do. You’re as clean as a whistle and as hot as magma. Maybe even hotter! Careful not to touch anyone, Delira, you might burn somebody! You look so good in this big fuzzy coat, with it’s deep red fabric and it’s pink fur accents. Mph, you wish somebody other than Kamika could see you right now, because you look fine as hell. You make your way down the mountain side. The freezing weather and hazardous terrain keeps you safe when you’re home. Your thankful for it. Even if it means you can never invite someone over. Then again, with the way your room is, you don’t really want to.

Your lusus waits patiently in a large but hollow cavern. Their hair is covered in flakes of snow. They’re so huge it takes you a while to get onto their back. Once there you relay instructions and slowly begin your decent down the mountainside. They’re normally much faster than this.

No, not the hair. Not the hair! AUGH. She always does this. You’ve switched hair-soap threetimes now. Do you have lice? Ticks? What the hell is in your hair that makes her lick it? This never got old. Giggling as Mom continued making a complete, yucky mess of Delira’s hair, Kami grabbed a towel. Oh look, an alpaca-lick! That lock was going to dry sticky-stiff upwards if Deli didn’t pat it down. It was going to dry weird anyways, so perhaps the towel could wait… nah, they needed to disinfect the area anyways. Still, one of these days she was going to take some photos as “blackmail”.

As such, Kamika barely waited for her friend to reach the hidden stone door in the cliffside before flinging the door open and launching herself forwards in a big HUG that, if she had been a character in an text adventure based webcomic, would have been accompanied by at least five exclamation marks to indicate how much excitement was packed into it. Yes, there was her friend, reassuringly solid and fluffy in her bigass coat and smelling mildly of soap and alpaca spit, and still fit. Waving one arm at the unseen goatmom, Kami shuffled backwards without letting go of her friend, and closed the door via foot shove. Then, she released her friend to look at her, and promptly hugged her again.

"You are having tea first and then we go to my lab, because you haven’t hassled me about anything yet!" This time she released Delira sufficiently to let go of her and drag her downstairs towards an already set table.
