I need tiktokers to understand that ao3 has been home for the freaks (affectionate) ever since the day it was created. the entire site was created because “dark and fucked up fics” were banned and removed from other platforms, so us freaks came together and created a site for other freaks — a site where nothing is censored, a site with no algorithm, no capitalism, no ads, and again, absolutely no censorship.

this has been our house for decades. you newbies don’t come into our house and tell us how to arrange our furniture. either be nice and respect our house, or leave and build your own house elsewhere.

this. though in my personal opinion, whether or not it’s easy to write (yeah it’s not) is irrelevant. the thing is that people (normies) can’t seem to get the concept of fanfics, and that it’s something writers do for themselves as hobbies and a form of self-care. they write for themselves first and foremost, they’re not writing to please their audiences. you get to read their works for free because they’re kind enough to share their works with you to read for free, if you don’t like what you read, simply stop reading and either go find other fics to read, or write that fic you want to read yourself. don’t be an entitled asshole

I can comment on this from the perspective of someone who only ever received positive feedback on fanfiction.

It kept me writing.

Plain and simple. I wrote several multi chapter fics for fandoms I was obsessed with, because although my life at the time was absolute garbage, my commenters were golden. People wrote to me to say they loved it, they anticipated what happens next, they hyped up the parts they liked, it really gave a huge boost to my self esteem.

It gave me a lot of joy to post another chapter, regardless of whether or not I liked it, because I knew nobody would dunk on it. People treated it as - if you don't like it, don't keepr eading and don't comment. And that meant the world to 20-something year old depressed and anxious me.

So yes, we should be kinder to fanfic authors. We shouls encourage them to write more and to improve by doing, rather than by reading a unch of negativity nobody asked for.
