She showed promise so upon being taken in she was subjected to the usual rigorous training and lack of work life balance usually offered to the child members of the university, specializing in mechanics with her mind warped into believing the goal of her life was to bring the music box, an item she now refused to ever put down, into a living being. She aced her final exam and wowed the directors in a later screening defining her as one of the 4 most talented children in the school, and gaining the rank of an Apostle, specifically, the Apostle of Terror!
Though she failed to later make head apostle on a subsequent screening a few months later she reached breakthrough afterā¦ 24ā¦ or soā¦ scarified subjects, as well as the sacrifice of her own wings to the machine that had been heavily altered over the years, containing advanced technology scraped from the ruins of a dead city that was destroyed in the cataclysmā¦ ASTRAE was born!
ASTRAE (or Autonomous Scientific and Technological Research Alchemy Engine) was a fully sentient AI contained within a music box given the capability to speak, see, hear, and control the many weaponized appendages and devices within his deceptively-large-inside body.
Reportedly Plum, upon creating ASTRAE, proceeded to dub him as her ālittle brotherā and promise him that as soon as he can be fully stabilized to not needā¦ continued sacrifices (that are far more easy to accomplish within the small body)ā¦ that she would put all else aside in order to obtain for him a body capable of damn near all facets of human existence.
The two grew close, truly seeing eachother as family, the only family the two of them would ever have. Plum continued to carry ASTRAE around everywhere but with much greater reason now, as she had managed to through much effort, and a court trial, convince the council that since ASTRAE contained (at one point) her severed wings and was thus made using pain harvested from herā¦ that he was technically an extension of her body and thus, also the Apostle of Terror. Due to this. And due to her threatening to leave the faith and take her skills to rivals if told noā¦ the brotherhood had no choice but to graciously accept its first Apostle duoā¦ and itās first completely artificial apostle.
Where Plum was gloomy, introverted and silent, ASTRAE was boisterous, loud, and seemingly incapable of shutting up due to his lack of anything better to do than talk. Leading to Plum speaking through ASTRAE as she found herself comfortable enough to whisper to her supposed brother.
ASTRAE showed great promise due to his installed weapons, lack of connection to human life, and ability to never forget anything heād read or been told. Unfortunately for the brotherhood. ASTRAE really only showed interest in reading works of fiction which he jokingly (we think) declared as enough reason for him not to destroy mankind.
After trial and error a use was found for ASTRAE in psychological torture experiments and research of the faintly understood power of terror. (Though it should be noted that his first few experiments he found little more from than that āhumans donāt like being electrocuted/drowned/reminded of trauma/ect actually! Neat!ā Until other scientists managed to get ASTRAE through the arduous task of reading hundreds of past studies on the human psyche so he could comprehend it beyond that humans generally did not appreciate grim experiments.). ASTRAE has made great headway in this field especially upon being granted the ability to connect to a far larger facility allowing him to have access to much more hefty machinery and the ability to do multiple experiments at onceā¦ as if he could pay full attention to one at a time even and was not frequently found to be slacking off to read variousā¦ often bad fantasy novels.
Together ASTRAE and Plum spend most of their time studying ruins to further advance tech using what was found in the lost city. And the rest of it advancing āfear scienceā and technology respectively all funded by their benevolent cult! Theyāre also. Out of the narrative. Oddly wholesome for unethical scientists in a doomsday cult that worships pain (and also supposedly existent humanoid bugs they claim are ancient aliens and the precursors to humans! WE MUST BECOME BUGS TO ASCEND ITS THE ONLY WAY-).
I made the mistake of letting ASTRAE choose his own personality because I didnāt know how the fuck an AI trained to torture people specifically who is also in a cult would act. And somehow it resulted in him beingā¦ oddly comedic and lighthearted??? While also clealry being juuuust a little (only a drop! DW!) unhinged and unable to understand the pain of others and he cannot at all comprehend pain itself due to his lack of sensation.
