Summary: Dating the major had its advantages: status, prestige, money...but above all, in winter, it meant a warm cup of tea while everyone else had to train outside in the snow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She couldn't remember how it had started, how the eyes behind the sunglasses had fallen on her.
Perhaps it was her inspection, a demonstration of her abilities, which she had received like everyone else at the academy.
Perhaps it was her precision when shooting, or perhaps it was the smile she had given him when she left the square - knowing full well that, as a woman, she would receive the bonus.
Having a woman in the military was difficult, especially in the difficult times that the country was going through...but for the older man.
It was the perfect opportunity to use her for his propaganda, and perhaps it was the campaign they were doing together that had brought them both together.
Whenever she took his hand, raised it high, and the crowd cheered them on, his powerful voice when he announced her, and she liked how he praised her.
Perhaps it was just for show, but behind the curtains, in his large estate, it was something else entirely.
He cared for her, she enjoyed his company, and soon it was a relationship between equalsâeven now in winter, when times were only getting harder.
Knowing that most people in their homes were suffering, that food was scarce, the gray-haired man seemed to want to do even more for her.
âOnly the best for my superstar,â he would always say when it was a new dress, new ammunition, imported makeup, or even just fruit that wouldn't grow again until the following year.
Trivialities that had been normal just a few years ago but were now a luxury for them.
She gave him her friendly smile, looked at her reflection in his glasses, and said, âI expect that from a legend like you,â a response that always made him smile.
His best years were behind him, but his presence was unmatched - he represented America, he represented the military.
He was the Major.
Well, it was a cool December day, and snow had fallen overnight, but that didn't bother her as she sat at the richly laid dining table with him.
âHow mean will you be to them today?â she asked, knowing that he had already thought of something for the soldiers, who in his eyes were all incompetent.
He took his time drinking his coffee, knowing how much he valued his quiet mornings. âYou know me too well, my dear. They will clear the snow and then simulate a siege in the tunnelâ a plan as simple as it was effective.
A few months ago, they would have had to be down there too, with their fingers nearly frozen in the snow, praying that the exercise would be over soon.
That was over now. Instead, she sat across from the major, knowing that he was watching her, that he knew exactly what she was thinking.
âDo I see a naughty smile there?â he commented, and she smiled as she sipped her coffee.
He knew her just as well, and perhaps it was one of those aspects that made them a good match.
The best part of the day, however, was after breakfast when he led her out onto the balcony, looking military again in his winter uniform.
She, on the other hand, was dressed in a fur coat with warm gloves. âOnly the bestâ he had murmured when he had given her the latest gift and she had fallen around his neck.
However, it only got better after his speech to the soldiers, the Major had a table set up where they could drink hot tea while watching the soldiers.
Satisfied to be sitting next to him, she took a sip of tea and sighed, âYou know how to spoil a lady,â and felt his hand on hers, seeing that even though he was watching the soldiers, he had a smile on his lips.
âThat's what age does... none of the greenhorns down there could do thatâ and she laughed before resting her head on his shoulder and feeling the kiss on her head.
He may have been scary, he may have been intimidating, but he had a heart for her.
