So I got to thinking "why are vampires always portrayed as Catholic or addicts?" Because the only other time we see them not that way is in twilight where the Cullen family is sorta obviously Mormon. Even then, the Vultori are obviously the evil Catholics here to kill good old Joe in Missouri.
But while pondering, I realized Muslim vampires would be so fucking cool. And for a few reasons
1) They would be a matriarchy. Based purely on hijabis being able to be protected from the sun, it makes sense that they would be the main ambassadors of keeping everyone out of trouble in the day and keeping up with everyone. Also have you seen what these women can do to hijabs to make them look bad ass?
2) They probably wouldn't live off people, according to the Quran, you can't ever go out of your way to hurt or kill another Muslim unless you absolutely have to. And it also says everyone is born Muslim, hence why people only "revert" to Islam.
3) part of making food halal is draining the blood. They can make sure mortal Muslims are fed. That's something that you can do if you can't fast during Ramadan, you make sure you can feed someone who needs it.
4) I feel like the fasting during Ramadan makes sense in some way here, being holiest throughout the day, and adding to the hijab matriarchy thing.
Not only would Muslims be cool as fuck as vampires, Muslim vampires would give back to the community 10 fold unlike the stinky, overdone, Catholic vampires.
Ok fuck it, reading goals are at 12 books this year and I did no reading until about a week and a half ago. And it's Tumblr's problem now.
I finished book 1: Breaking Dawn. 0/10 How could Alice betray us like this. It's the second time I cried over twilight. (I love this saga and I have Midnight Sun and Life and Death. Taking a break from those because I want to watch the movies with my mom and I need to chill before I burn out)
Alrighty alrighty... Book 2: Wings of Fire; The Flames of Hope. 10/10 if I had a dollar for every time a rainwing spit acid at a Queen's face, I'd have 2 dollars and I wouldn't need to pay for entertainment ever again. I love Tui, and I can't wait to read the next arc in the series.
Hello friends. I have read book 3, The High Mountain Court by A. K. Mulford. 9/10 this is the second book I have read to have a sex scene and we didn't have a friendly neighborhood Mormon around to filter anything for my asexual sensibilities. But it was a great book, I want to keep reading from this author.
Right off the bat, chapter 12 did have me laughing to tears a little bit. I can really appreciate how I was unfortunately relating to the genocidal maniac with the main characters trying to fuck right one the actual poker game.
Goofy gooners aside, there's something particularly painful reading the adoptive mother sacrificing herself for the main character while seeing my own mom deal with chemo. Soul crushing. But that's just reading, how wonderful it is to be alive and have artists weaving tapestries that use light years of words to describe these feelings and experiences, and for us to get it deep within our souls.
The pacing was done immaculately, I absolutely adore having queerness be represented, particularly a nonbinary person being fae with the common tropes of "faes only have a male and female binary". As well as gay and lesbian characters. I loved the world building.
Biggest complaint, and this is across all the authors I'm reading in my journey of literacy... If I have to read 'pursed lips' ONE MORE TIME, I'm going to become an alcoholic.
I did however join a book club! A tiny one but I'm looking forward to it. I also did get the book in the mail this morning and started.
Getting into the tea and biscuits of this Tumblr users... I can tell this copy was DNFed, and my wife and I got into a whole conversation because she read a bunch of reviews and blah blah blah and she bets I'm going to dnf it too.
But 3 chapters in and I kinda like it. And maybe I am destined to become the CaseOh of books and that's not bad as long as I'm not forking over money to trans phobic assholes. Let me gently set down my books on my nightstand after feverishly finishing them off at 1 am on a Saturday and say "2026 Hugo winner" and live my life.
Book 4 (a month late, rip me) Wings of Fire; The Hybrid Prince
Thank God for Tui giving us a break from "pursed lips"
I love it, I'm really looking forward to everything this series has to offer, especially because 2026 Tui can make the dragons gay and trans and nonbinary compared to 2014 Tui. And I can't believe I have been following this series for that long after finding Clay's face in my school's library.
Beryl is the southern mom all my ex boyfriends warned me they have.
Free my homies from Australia.
I can't wait for the next book. (But don't look up book 17, the google AI will tell you it's a Kinkajou POV and I'm still pissed off I got a shred of hope for a half a second before I scrolled around)
Took me a wildly long time to like Rua but the last 10 chapters really knocked my socks off.
So I come to you tumblr, wearing flip flops because my socks are gone now, to say I liked it.
I love that I have read a book that I didn't immediately vibe with the main character. She annoyed the fuck out of me. I'm just like her sister from The High Mountain Court a big old softy, a crier. But I did it, I stuck with it, I'm glad because this book was great. I love how the series is paced and how things are playing out.
Something my wife pointed out, and The High Mountain Court suffered with this as well, I don't like the trope of "tiny woman only has daggers" I'm not saying they need just an arming sword but we can get a little whimsical here. Give them a staff, or a hammer, or something.
My copy was DNFed by the previous owner, and I finished it. I did exactly what I set out to do. I'll see y'all when I finish Iron Flame in my book club (but it's probably gonna be City of Bones first. We run a tight ship with book club.)
Somneque: A gender related to being both a knight and a prince and being sleepy. May also be related to or have characteristics of nighttime, moonlight, stars, clouds, sleeping, dreams, avoiding one's duties, soft textures, and shades of blue and purple.

One time when I was in high school I had a field trip to see an author at my local library do a book signing and talk about the creative process, what it was like to be a publisher both with a publishing company and self publishing, etc etc, it was super interesting.
But we took a van because there were only 6 of us and one of my classmates was rumored to be "playing hooky" but his mom called him in sick. And on the way to the library we saw him shooting hoops in his driveway and we didn't stop to say hi because we were running late. Then our teacher said "absolutely fucking not" when his friends BEGGED us to sit outside his apartment when he said he was violently shitting all his pants from how sick he was. (He was not sick, we did not care. He needed a mental health day and we respected that)
Biggest regret is that we didn't pull over and take his lying ass with us. It was really fun.
