He gave a small smile, not quite meeting her eyes. “I have actually.” He would never have brought it up if she hadn’t asked as he preferred to be modest about it, but it was something that he was proud of and it showed on his face. Carter didn’t want to make that big of a deal about it. Then he hurriedly went on to add, “I don’t always go to competition ones though. Sometimes it’s just a social thing where a bunch of us get together and subsist on pizza and energy drinks for 48 hours.” Often sleeping very little and ending with cramped fingers.
“Sounds like a riot,” Janie said, wearing a grin. She was glad to share a little conversation with someone whom she seldom spoke to. “I wish I could say that going away this past weekend was just as fun,” she said, chuckling, “but it wasn’t. It was a bunch of snobby publishers picking and choosing what books they thought were good from their own taste, and not really looking deeper into the story.” At this point, she was mostly musing to herself, but knocked herself out of it a moment later. “Sorry. I get passionate about publishing,” she said, embarrassed.
