How Selina was raised (not as good answer)

Selinas parents were the kind of people that if they never had expectations of having children put on them (especially in mormonism) they probably never would have had kids. Unlike the first two Selina was not planned at all. And they had her a later in life so you could say they were kinda just tired of raising kids at that point?

Selina had a lot of anxiety/sensitivities as a child and instead of trying to accommodate that they sorta just put a bandaid on the situation. Has social anxiety at school? Just take her home to sit in her room. Sensitive with closed shoes and having a hard time learning to do laces? Why teach her, just give her velcro sandals. Has a hard time with studies? Well we never really expected you to be good at that and it's too much time to take you to after classes so just do enough to pass.

Things went along those lines. If it wasn't crucial they'd find easier avenues and not teach her/ just do it themselves or hire someone to do that (another difference between children is that when the parents had the first two kids they had a lot less money than when selina came around). She was kinda born into a household that was already ready to move on from raising children so her schedule was built more around what the parents wanted than what she as a child needed.

This caused her to develop a lot of insecurities, learned helplessness and being really inexperienced at handling life.

Selina's relationship with her siblings + extended family

Both of Selina's older siblings left home while they were teenagers and have strained relationships with the parents (middle sibling cut them off while eldest sister took a gradual approach)- in extention whatever relationship they could've fostered with Selina also deteriorated. Now they see - in their own ways- Selina as a symbol or reminder of a childhood they'd rather not revisit while also dealing with some guilt over having left a sibling they hardly knew behind. Selina was just unfortunately born late, during a time when each sibling either stayed & suffocated with their parents or saved themselves and left. (Selina is around 8-10 when the siblings left).

Selina sees the two siblings quite differently when she's younger. Becuz of the age difference she's much closer to her parents and so her opinions are heavily influenced by theirs. Her eldest sister is the "golden child". Someone who did everything perfectly and overachieved to the highest degree. Her parents always bragged about her so Selina saw her as this mystical figure in her life and idolized her. That wore off to a dull longing when he hardly saw his eldest sister after she got married. Once she grew up her sisters greatness became a shadow over her life. Selina never would reach that kind of overachievement and no one even thought she could.

For Selina's other sibling I'm still deciding their gender. They are however the "bad child" in the family. They are only a couple of years younger than the Eldest sister and had similar immense pressure put on them but never lived up to it in the way the parents wanted so the parents would complain about them to Selina alot which lead to her having a skewed perception of them. Selina has more memories with them than eldest sister but mist of them are of her constantly snitched on the teenage sibling as a way to "bond" and get attention from the parents so there relationship ends on a more hostile note than the eldest sisters. The sibling then runs away from home at 18 and cuts off the parents completely. As Selina grows up she finds herself wondering what could've been and has a lot of guilt over how he treated them as a child. Selina also in some ways finds herself relating to this sibling and in the reconciliation arc I'm thinking of these two are the first to make up.

Extended family: Usually pacific islander have big connections with extended family but around the time Selina was born her parents stopped going to every single family event due to family drama (old and new). The times they did go he felt really out of place cuz all the other cousins already knew each other well by that point and he's socially awkward in general who even as a kid " self sabotaged" his irl friendships if he didn't immediately click with them first conversation.

I'm so proud of the work i put into this. I spent many days on it! I loved doing all the details for this Fantasy Angelina AU.

I like to think that this is the first time they are meeting the other's species and are in awe of the other. Perhaps even some soulmate elements with the matching heart necklaces!

Some things I was thinking about when making this art.

1. I was wondering what to have for Selinas top cuz i didnt want shells and then I remembered that in pacific islander culture we do a lot of weaving so I thought the mermaids would weave their items from like seaweed or something which is what Selinas top is meant to be.

2. I kinda wanted a little mermaid moment. Like Selina is perhaps saving Angel who fell into the water (I was thinking this is at night which is why Angel is underdressed). And that maybe Angel is a princess.

3. I wanted to imply something like soulmates with both of them having heart necklaces. Glowing when they meet each other? A relic that connects them across species maybe? (Also Angel's necklace has pearls while Selinas has carved animal bone 🙂‍↕️).

4. I was trying to think of what Angel's "culture" would be like since Selinas mermaid culture is inspired off of traditional PI culture. Because of the clothes/corset I just settled on the vaguely eurocentric vibe you see in otome isekai manwhas lol. Although the wings here do not reflect this I was thinking becuz of the timeperiod and clothing- if flying is discouraged/not taught in thay society as a way to control ppl and so Angel doesn't actually know how to fly properly and could be a reason as to why she fell into the water lol

5. I was thinking if I make Selina a "princess" too but instead I thought of this idea that she's the equivalent to a noble and is like the childhood friend turned "lady in waiting" to the Matai's daughter (who is the past love who dies in selinas story that I haven't written yet 💔).

I spent waaaay too much time drawing this it got me thinking all the AU thoughts 😭
