I don’t buy the idea that mercy is an immaculate angel.

I think that she’s compassionate, but her smile is occasionally wistful. Not like she radiates melancholy, but she might have been through quite a lot. Just imagine how many times she had to witness her death of her friends. How many people she was failed to save. That’s probably just me anyway. My more serious art usually has some kind of mild sentimental feeling after all.

Also my headcanon is that she’s probably halfway a cyborg now, but most of her robotic parts are internal organs.
