The chemistry of physicality
Because I am a nerd I have been pondering why "Heated Rivalry" hit so much different than the thing easiest to compare it to: "Red White and Royal Blue." Which was popular, sure, but you can't really deny that it didn't send the entire internet into a frenzy the way HR has.
I think it's the touching.
Allow me to splain.
Now, don't get me wrong. I really enjoyed RWRB. I was cute, funny, sexy. The lead actors had great romantic and interpersonal chemistry.
But.
They didn't have great physical chemistry.
I always felt like they were both a little hesitant, a little too deliberate, with how they touched each other. I don't know if that's due to a mismatch in sexualities, a personality thing, an intimacy coordinator who was bad at their job, or the direction...but it just didn't quiiiiiiiite land.
It was like you could see them thinking about it. "Ok, now I put my hand on his side. Now I slide this hand up his shoulder. Ok, now I lean into his arm." And so on. It looked...scripted. Their hands always seemed to be slightly hovering over the other's body.
But in HR? These two guys look completey unscripted. They look like two guys who cannot stop touching each other, and when they do, it's the opposite of hesitant. It's all in, it's urgent, it's desperate. It's the million small touches that can't have been written in - a hand on a chin, a tit-grab, fingers wrapped around a jaw, hands in hair. It feels totally real and neither of them seem like they're the slightest bit shy or hesitant about it.
And it's not that HR is so much more explicit than RWRB was (although it is). It's the very nature of that explicitness, and how raw and needy it seems. It's visceral, it gets you in the guts, and I do not know how they're doing it, tbh.
I can't wait to see what happens when they merge that rawness with the increasing tenderness that we're gonna see soon. We've already seen it a bit and it's MINDBLOWING.
Which makes it interesting that Jacob Tierney has said he worked with their intimacy coordinator to block out all the intimate scenes with very detailed choreography, as if it were a dance. Because in his view if the actors can be confident in every movement in advance then that frees them up to concentrate on expression and emotion in the moment.
But I also think Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams are both incredibly comfortable touching each other (based on the press tour and behind the scenes footage) and that can't help but translate on screen.
I wanted to add these comments from Connor Storrie, because I think it speaks directly to the point op was making.
How much adlibbing and improv are going on during the sex scenes, or is it very by the book? Everything is scripted. Yeah, there are some oohs and ohs that we put in there. The things that aren’t fully scripted are some of our touches, some of our body kisses and stuff, and that just came down to establishing a bunch of boundaries beforehand. There are levels to everything, right? Where are you allowed to be touched? What type of kisses are you allowed to do? And what do you wear to give you proper protection in any moment, depending on the act? There’s a closed-mouth kiss. There’s an open-mouth kiss. There’s an open-mouth kiss with tongue. There’s a hardcore open-mouth, prolonged kiss with tongue. You can wear pants. You can wear shorts. You can wear a G-string. You can wear layers. You can wear bike shorts that have padding. You can wear neoprene. There are levels to it. Hudson and I, separately, we’re just like, “I’m not weird about that. I’m not squeamish.” I trust him. I also feel confident enough in the production to voice anything if I ever feel uncomfortable, so I’m like, “So, let’s go all the way. I’ll wear the least amount of clothes. I’ll do the most amount of kisses.” It literally just made me and Hudson be like, “Is it cool if I touch you here?” And I’m like, “Yeah, touch me anywhere. I don’t care.” So all those little intricate kisses, touches in between moments, a lot of that is just us organically feeling into that moment.

This is a bad take OP. RWRB is about two characters forming a relationship and learning about each other and themselves, of course it’s awkward and a bit stilted and tentative because they’re figuring things out. Whereas HR takes place over the course of a decade, and they become familiar territory to each other. Their intimacy had to be seen as confident because they’ve come to know each other over that time.
It’s two different forms of intimacy which suit the story each is telling. There is no one correct way to show physical chemistry, and both served their purpose. But comparing one to the other is disingenuous because they are not directly comparable besides being sex scenes between two men.

Favourite written fic this year: And longer by far... For one, I really quite enjoy writing angst, but I also liked finding the elements of About Time and RWRB that I could weave into a fic.
Most under appreciated fic this year: And longer by far... which is a shame! I think it’s a good read, but I also understand not wanting to read angst. I get it.
Most fun fic to write: iconography (is standin' right in front of me) which was written for @clrmntdzfx birthday! It was really fun coming up with all the Disney backstory for Alex, and weaving in the descriptions of Henry all done up in a dress and heels.
Biggest disappointment: Having a slow start to the year put me on the back foot, I think. I also really struggled to keep momentum for Tastes Like Heartbreak, which I feel a lot of guilt about. Plus once I started posting it again, fandom was in a lull so it didn’t get a lot of engagement which felt quite discouraging.
Biggest surprise: That Haunting the Narrative was so well received! I literally threw things at the discord server I share with @clrmntdzfx and @ebelila to see what would stick, and with their encouragement, I managed to craft a story which seems to have found it’s home in some people’s hearts.

Favourite written fic this year: Coming Up For Oxygen. Technically I wrote most of it last year and just finished posting it this year, but it’s the longest fic I’ve ever written and wrapping it up was so satisfying. I’m really proud of it <3
Most under appreciated fic this year: Coming Home, @dwell-the-brave’s birthday fic. But it was appreciated by the one person who matters most!
Most fun fic to write: Too Hot. It was a totally ridiculous, escapist fantasy at a time when my life felt like it was falling apart, and writing the story and the tweets was SO much fun.
Biggest disappointment: not getting through more of the fics I had on my writing goals this year. BUT half of the fics I wrote this year were not on the list, so I think it’s fine.
Biggest surprise: the response to Too Hot. It has over 600 comment threads which is INSANE with engagement right now. It blew up (and blew me away).

After a *coughfewcough* month(s), I'm finally at a point where I feel I can start posting Tastes Like Heartbreak (...) again.
And so I finally present to you - chapter 2!
Summary:
The ‘Celebratory Tour’ schedule that arrives in his inbox overnight is packed. ‘Schedule for the Celebratory Tour of the marriage of HRH Henry of Wales and Mr A Claremont-Diaz’ was delivered to [email protected] at 3:47am, and Alex takes a moment to pity the poor coordinators from both sides of the Atlantic for throwing this whole thing together in less than 24 hours. That pity lasts until he actually opens up the schedule, and then he nearly drops his phone in shock.

Summary:
Despite their history, sharing a bed in this new context felt… strange. Intimate. Weighted, in some way. And so he had kept to his side of the bed, and Henry to the other, and neither of them had slept. They stumble through a visit to Sydney Opera House, and Alex is nearly lulled to sleep on the ferry ride over to Manly. In an approved photo op, he’d toed off his polished oxfords and socks, and rolled up his suit pants to walk, barefoot, hand-in-hand with Henry across the hot sand, the camera clicking in the distance.
