after my next read i might maybe FINALLY give hdm a reread?? first time in english too. really wanna write my true dust au and a reread is necessary, it's been so long
speaking of the alethiometer. we need to talk about how it actively manipulated lyra to fulfill her role in the prophecy, ironically stripping the character in the role of biblical eve of free will in her choices. maybe lyra wasn't following the will of god but she was following the will of the alethiometer, controlled by dust/fallen angels who claimed to be fighting for free will and yet used her regardless
and interesting twist to see would have been lyra realising this and actively defying it, mirroring eve making her own choices in the garden of eden. lyra could get into furious symbology debates with the alethiometer, demanding the full answer she is owed instead of some vaguery that is manipulating her into the next place she needs to be for some bigger than thou purpose
what if lyra's journey of looking for dust turned into looking for dust that didn't have its own machination of revenge yet?? dust that isn't angels or fallen angels. both of which, she realises, are in the wrong or at least going about their goal the wrong way in the case of the fallen angels (after all they were allied with asriel). so she wants to search for dust, true dust, dust that is the pure joy of being alive and having a mind and a will. a dust that says "the universe is alive and it cares". and that leads to the biblical fall through the actions of mary who can see dust through the amber spyglass
the fallen angels would become another antagonistic force along with heaven itself and the magisterium (and also lyra's parents). because they became what they swore to destroy, first mistake made by deciding to ally themselves with asriel
this is all especially blatant in the scene whete lyra realises she can no longer read the alethiometer. why would the "loss of her childhood innocence" mean she can no longer read an object powered by dust?? the answer is because her alethiometer multiple times is stated to almost have a mind of its own, the fallen angels, who are also inside mary's cave computer. lyra served her purpose to the fallen angels and thus she no longer has to be able to read the alethiometer. her words when this happens are even "it has abandoned me". will didn't stop being able to use the knife after the new biblical fall happened, lyra shouldn't be the only one being punished by maturing
in my rewrite at this moment lyra would feel Happy. finally the angels have stopped affecting her alethiometer and it is simply filleed with dust, not angels, it is now entirely hers
the way pullman wrote about lyra in tsc, especially from malcolm's pov, could be found in the how men write women subreddit. what the Fuck is "young girl smell", pullman. i'll kill you
pullman talking shit about the chronicles of narnia is the funniest thing. like ok dude you wrote 700 pages of racism and misogyny and published that in 2019 what's your excuse
Found out today that Philip Pullman wrote a whole second trilogy for His Dark Materials so I read the wiki summaries and... wow I hate everything about this.
The first book sounds like an episode in massively over explaining things that don't need to be explained (I Do Not Care how Lyra ended up at the college or the alethiometer was set aside for her) and the later books... what do you MEAN she spends two books apart from her daemon? The core part of the setting that gives it so much flavor? Her literal soul? After they went through the pain and terror of almost being Severed? And what do you mean she's obsessed with rationality? Despite everything that happened to her traveling across worlds?
Maybe it's better in execution but this just feels like an author undercutting everything that made the work magical in the first place by adding a bunch of unnecessary detail. I don't know. Definitely not going to read to find out, but I feel like the fact that I didn't hear a single word about these books despite the last one coming out last year speaks for itself. :/
hi! person who read 2/3 books here, no, it's not better in execution! the first book was only good in isolated moments. the second book only has one (1) good chapter. everything else in the second book is bloated, unnecessary, everyone and their mother suddenly has a relative we never heard about before, lyra does not act like lyra anymore (and not in a fun she just matured from her adventure way), she reads of women written by men and a cynic atheist white man at that, the conflict with pantalaimon is barely explored, all the good bits are just passing thoughts that i know from first-hand sources don't come to fruition in the third book, her primary "love interest" (if you can even call it that) is one of her professors who taught her when she was fifteen and he was at least in his mid-twenties, it is a book drowning in orientalism that had the time for off-handed queerphobia as well, and to top it all of lyra is almost assaulted for no other reason than shock value in chapter 31. if pullman intended this series to be the journey of lyra rediscovering her childhood wonder after the trauma she lived through in the original series, he lost sight of that sometime between getting the idea and sitting down to actually write it.
just rewatched the 2007 movie and we were all so mean to her. the costume design. the love and care to put dæmons on almost every crowd scene. that whimsical feeling only 00s movies can capture. dakota blue richards was a perfect lyra. sam elliott was a perfect lee scoresby. did they fumble some things? yes. i'm not super into some of the "fantastical" technology. the faces of the dæmons are a bit off-putting at times. the changes made to the flow of the plot are kinda strange on the latter half. and making pavel try and poison asriel robs the master of jordan of some of his character. but overall? the vibes: impeccable. i will be angry forever that we didn't get to see the true ending and they ended it with lyra saying "the alethiometre says i'm bringing my father what he needs :)" WHEN YOU KNOW. also crazy there was not a single mention of the northern lights in an adaptation of nothern fucking lights lmao
