the fairy theory: inspired by WITHIN WALLS, human experiments done on people with multiple dæmons
the animal's belly: adapting an old book idea to be about dæmons. could this be done with canon characters? maybe. and maybe i will go that route. but who knows.
Iorek: god you’re so fucking stupid. Lyra isn’t dead she’s *in* the land of the dead. Also I fixed that knife because I am a smith beyond measure and a better dad than you.
My favourite thing about His Dark Materials's world building is that characters will just reference or talk about something completely wild and just not fucking elaborate.
Like what the fuck do you mean Lee Scorsby is "a New Dane from the country and Texas" what the fuck is new Denmark
Then occasionally the narrator breaks in the explain big super important stuff, like the majestuirum but start it with shit like "After the death of Pope John Calvin" HELLO JOHN CALVIN WAS POPE WHAT THE FUCK
What a daemon is is literally never explained the reader just has to take in the vibes of how character talk about them
It would be so out of character for a person in real life to just exposit history or explanations about how the world works because everyone already knows, barring situations where a person might not know some vital information and the fact none of the characters do this is genius.
(if you can pardon the ramble, whenever I see the daemons mentioned, I remember my theory about them, and also potentially another "metaphor" of the series; we know a lot of it is biblical, some very obviously, but stay with me on this... another big part of the story is the concept of childhood/growing up. one of the most important things is a substance known as "dust". through the northern lights, characters are able to see "other worlds in the stars". Pantalaimon's nick-name is "Pan". all this made me think of the story of Peter Pan, the boy who will never grow up, who flies with pixie dust, and lives in Neverland- second star to the right. so all THAT made me think of the quote about where fairies come from- “When the first baby laughed for the first time, its laugh broke into a thousand pieces, and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies.” so... I wondered if maybe, in Lyra's world, Daemons, which are an extension of a person's soul, first appear when a baby laughs for the first time. or, perhaps when a baby is first capable of experiencing more complex thoughts/emotions, maybe even as a form of comfort in great distress, and the Daemon takes an outward physical form. there, that's all~)
Not only is having worldbuilding threads that are mentioned once and never picked up again not a flaw in fantasy media, I'd go so far as to say that a lack of such threads is a flaw. If everything ties up in one neat little package, you're missing the point of fantasy worldbuilding. Like, don't do it on every page, or your setting is going to be an overstuffed mess, but every so often you are not only allowed but obligated to casually drop some utterly batshit worldbuilding detail and then just never follow up on it. Maybe some rocks are sentient. You don't owe your reader an explanation. Just fucking go for it.
"Come on, I'll make a new bandage, I'll put some coffee on to cook, I'll make some omelette, whatever you want, and we'll sleep....We'll be safe now we've got the alethiometer back, you'll see."

— The Subtle Knife, Chapter Nine: Theft
"Where's my free will, if you please? And this child seems to me to have more free will than anyone I ever met. Are you telling me that she's just some kind of clockwork toy wound up and set going on a course she can't change?"
"We are all subject to the fates. But we must all act as if we are not," said the witch, "or die of despair."
