Love triangles and spoilers!
s p o i l e r s
darklingscult: said: I loved chain of gold. can you give us any hints about how the love triangle in the last hour (james, cordelia, and matthew) is different from herongraystairs? hope you’re doing good in these trying times. thank you!
It has one thing in common with Herongraystairs: Matthew and James are parabatai. Otherwise it has nothing in common with it. Tessa was a stranger to Will and Jem: Cordelia has been friends with James forever. Tessa didn’t have any emotions about Will and Jem when she met them. Cordelia’s been in love with James all her life. Tessa had never met Will or Jem; Cordelia knows both Matthew and James. Tessa was a warlock, Cordelia’s a Shadowhunter. Tessa wasn’t unrequitedly in love with Will; Cordelia’s unrequitedly in love with James, as far as she knows. Jem and Will were a dyad, attached to each other with basically no other friends — Matthew and James are part of a thriving friends group. Jem and Will are oblivious to each other’s feelings for Tessa. Matthew and James are not. Nothing like what happens with James and Cordelia — the fake “engagement” that forces them into a very weird situation with each other — occurs in TID. Jem feels fine about telling Tessa he loves her because he doesn’t think Will has feelings for her. He also doesn’t think Tessa loves Will. Matthew knows the situation he’s in is far more complicated and he knows a lot more than one might imagine, including knowing any declarations he makes will have the impact of a small bomb. In TID everyone tried to behave in the best possible way all the time. I can’t say the same for TLH.
I could go on, but the thing is: these are different people and therefore their story will be different. Not all love triangles are the same; in fact, because they are conflict-centered, they tend to all be very different, rather like Tolstoy’s unhappy families. When I first wrote TID, I was asked endlessly how it would be “different” from TMI, because it was about a girl who didn’t know about Shadowhunters and then met some so it had to be the same. By about book two that ended. With TDA, I got the same thing: obviously it was the same story as TMI because Julian, like Clary, was an artist, and Emma was blond and sarcastic like Jace. (I believe the top critical review on Amazon of Lady Midnight says exactly that.) Again this ended with book two. People both fear and look for similarities: at this point, having gone through this so many times, my feeling is that there will always be worry that a story will be the ‘same” as one that went before, partly because people are hardwired to look for patterns and impose them onto narrative until the narrative spills past the point that can be done. What I can say about it will only make a small dent: I do however predict we will be having a very different conversation about this next April.
We can check back then. ;)
THIS IS GOING TO DESTROY ME
If this tv series ruins will Herondale I will lose my mind. I don’t want to relive the trauma of the tmi adaptations
are you okay
is anyone
Lucie: Mum, why is dad crying?
Tessa: He did a which animal are you quiz -
Tessa: And got duck.
Will: I am NOT a DUCK!

Person: do you like broa-
Me:
Jesse Blackthorn out here like
LMAO
author: writes about intriguing characters who all coexist in the storyline perfectly, bringing about a sequence of events
author: adds a dark haired boy with a dark past, bad manners and questionable motives
me: i’ll take the beautiful mean one
Cristina not only gets 1 faerie boy...but 2? And guess how many I get? 0. Thanks for nothing, universe.
Life just isnt fair 😪😪
If Cassie doesn’t give us a scene of Magnus walking in on Jordelia in a compromising position, she’s paying for my therapy.
And if Magnus does say “like father, like son,” what’s the point
You know what I’m gonna take this a step further, not only does he need to walk in on Jordelia and say exactly that, he also needs to walk in on Kitty and be like “can I just once meet a Herondale and not see them in the throes of passion?”
James: All you do is kill people.
Belial: That’s like saying all Mozart did was write songs.
Charles is absent for a good part of COI, due to an unfortunate situation of his own making.
