i think there’s this weird tendency to point at cases where one person/group is rewarded for a harmless behaviour and another is punished for that same behaviour and treat that discrepancy as like… the fault of Person A? or evidence that they’ve done something wrong?

but like… in those situations, the problem isn’t that Person A is rewarded; it’s that Person B is punished, and folks often seem to lose sight of that? (obviously if Person A isn’t speaking up on behalf of Person B, that’s a problem; but the mere fact that someone is rewarded for harmless behaviour and someone else is punished for it should be a condemnation of the people enacting those societal double standards, not of the person doing a harmless act).
