Syd gave a single nod, “Alright. A deal’s a deal.” She bent down under the table and grabbed a small bag of apples, crossing the room to hand it to her. “Here ya go, I’ll take that.” she said as she grabbed the rabbit.

While Syd was getting the apples, Dylan took the rabbit out of her bag. The other girl had plenty of places to put the furry creature, but Dylan only had one bag designated for game. “Thanks,” she replied once the switch was made. The bag wasn’t big, but she could hear the apples inside collide as the bag moved.

Elliot was walking across the room, attempting to be as quiet as he could manage but seeing as it was him, that wasn’t as quiet as he was hoping. He’d accidentally almost toppled over onto a few sleeping bodies, but so far no one had really gotten up to yell at him, which was always a plus. He’d been stepping over one girl in particular and unintentionally stepped on some part of her body, quickly retracting and falling back onto his back. “Sorry, sorry about that.” He looked at who it was and saw that her eyes were already open. “Dylan, right? Sorry.”

Dylan heard someone walking around but didn’t think much of it. She closed her eyes and tried to sleep, but before she could even start counting sheep (hey, might as well try everything), she felt something on her thigh. Her eyes opened up to see a dark figure lying by her. It was Elliot; she could tell by his voice. Plus he already knew her name, so that narrowed the list quiet dramatically. “It’s alright,” she whispered, not wanting to wake anyone else up by speaking. “Why are you up?”

Cade was on the floor, unable to sleep. It’s been more than a week, maybe two, since their deaths, but she still couldn’t let go. She was lying still when the girl next to her seemed to toss and turn. “Hey hun, you okay over there?” She asked, “You’re tossin’ and turnin’ like a horse who drank tainted water.”

Dylan slowly sat up, letting out as a sigh as she did so. “Yeah. Just can’t sleep.”

“I’ll give you one little potato.” Syd said as she tossed across the table where she was cooking. “Anything else you’ve gotta trade me for it, I’m not in the business of giving away free food here.”

Dylan caught the small potato with ease but set it back down on the table. “Save your potatoes,” she said, grabbing a bloodied bag from her waist and holding it up. “I’ve got your fat rabbit, and I’m here for my apples.”

Dylan was lying awake on the gym floor. Nearly everyone in the room was asleep, except for her. It wasn’t that she was sick of sleeping on the floor, although, it was partly that, but she just couldn’t sleep. Nothing was on her mind, and the gym was quiet save the snores of those around her. She simply could not fall asleep, and so she lied there, tossing and turning, wishing she could sleep.

At first, Alexia didn’t recognize her. She’d never become good with recognizes faces, considering she’d lived such a sheltered life that she’d seen so little, so she didn’t drop her guard when she met the eyes of the other woman. “Watch it,” she said, her eyes narrowing as she glared at her. “You’re going to give away my position. It’s the perfect scouting place.”

A few more seconds of glaring into her eyes had her recognizing her. She was good at keeping up a facade, so the only indication that she realized who it was was the flash of recognition in her eyes that widened a little bit. She didn’t know why, but she didn’t want to give away that she couldn’t recognize her at first. That could be an indication of weakness, and she refused to have any of those. She tapped her finger on her knife and waited for a few more agonizing minutes before she let go, losing her grip on the girl and lowering her knife away from her throat. There was the slightest mark on the other girl’s neck from the blade. “You got the same idea as me, huh?”

She could tell Alexia didn’t recognize her. She was continuing to threaten her and the knife was still at Dylan’s throat. She glared back at Alexia but didn’t make any move to go against her or remove the knife. Although, during the long moments after Alexia recognized her, she wished she had done something. The knife at her neck was a nuisance now, and she just wanted to get rid of it. Throw it in the woods or a lake or something, anything to get it away from her neck. 

Once that stupid thing was finally gone, Dylan visibly relaxed. She didn’t bother checking her neck for a mark; she knew there was one. At the question, she hesitated, but it didn’t show on her face. She didn’t want to say anything about why she was wandering outside obviously without her gear, so she just changed the subject. “Took you long enough to put that knife down.”

Alexia wasn’t sure if she even believed herself, but she was trying. She’d get there eventually unless she ditched this whole “working with a team” bullshit. Absentmindedly, she tossed her knife in the air and caught it by the handle with complete accuracy, like she’d done so a thousand times. “Want to invade a store?”

The thought of invading a store seemed fun, but it was much too dark for them to be out and be so far away from the group. “Another time. We should be getting back. We’ll go when it’s light out.” She put her own knife away before turning around and heading in the direction they just came in.

Elliot nodded at the question and put his hands in the pockets of his jacket and sat down on the edge of the building with her. “Yeah, I mean it’s not my favorite activity but it came pretty easy to me.” He shrugged and thought about the job that he had before all this happened and dismissed it. It was in the past now, he had to look towards the future now. “How about you? Did you learn to hunt after all this,” he gestured to their surroundings with a wave of his finger, “Or was it something you did before?”

“My father was really into it. We owned a cabin in the woods, and he taught me how to do everything.” She didn’t always enjoy it, but everything she was taught had a major hand in keeping her alive in this world. “Without my dad, I wouldn’t be here.”

“Nice to meet you, Dylan.” Harley smiled. “I take it you’ve been here for a while?”

“A week, maybe. You new?”

Inside of the playground stood a jungle gym, and inside of that jungle gym the barrel of a gun stuck out of one of the dark tunnels and toward the street, threatening the life of anything that came into its path. Alexia was lying down inside, one eye shut as she trained her aim at something that wasn’t yet there. She didn’t hear anyone approach the jungle gym with the same idea, nor did she hear them climb up – her head was stuck in the focus.

It wasn’t until she heard them behind her that she realized what was happening. Setting the gun down lightly she slowly turned and slid out the other side, being as silent as possible. Barely seconds passed as she quickly grabbed the figure that was standing there and shoved them against the bars of the jungle gym, holding a knife to their throat. It took several seconds for it to register that she recognized this person from the group she was staying with, but even then she didn’t lower her knife just yet. “Don’t you know better than to surprise someone like that?” She growled.

Dylan didn’t know there were other people outside. She didn’t know anyone was in the jungle gym, and she didn’t expect to see anyone as she wondered around. She really had no purpose being there, but she did it anyway. It felt oddly familiar to be looking at monkey bars and short slides. Her school had a very small lot for recess that was cemented into the ground. This place had a much better setup, and it made her wish she hadn’t lived in the concrete jungle so she could have gone to school at a place like this and lived in the country with her dad. The city wasn’t really her kind of place, and she was rather glad to be rid of it.

Her wandering thoughts of what could have been came to a halt when she heard a small sound. Her hand hovered over her knife as she glanced around looking for mutants, and she was totally thrown off guard when Alexia came at her. Dylan was startled and quickly backed up into the side of the jungle gym, feeling like prey. There was a knife at her throat, and without the makeup the girl last saw her in, she feared Alexia wouldn’t recognize her. Her hair was down, which was a rare sight in itself, as well. Instead of saying anything, she just stared at Alexia, waiting for the knife to be put away. She didn’t like to feel threatened.

She looked at her, wonderinghow to answer the question. Her own survival was always the most important, but she knew she had to adjust her run-when-it-saves-you rule a bit if she wanted to work with a group for more than a few weeks. “I’d kill it,” she said, her tone giving off the impression that her answer was the most obvious one. “Or help kill it,” she added, reflecting on the possibility that it was bigger than her, which sometimes happened. She usually ran from those, though.

Dylan looked back at the girl, watching for hesitation and signs of distress. She wasn’t sure if she believed Alexia, but she hoped she wouldn’t have to find out either. “Alright,” she replied, turning her head to face the darkness. She wasn’t totally satisfied but figured it wasn’t a big deal. She’d just have to try out hunting with her to be sure doing so was a good idea.

Syd appreciated how relaxed this girl seemed, some people she’d run into seemed wound pretty tight but Dylan didn’t seem so bad. “True, good point.” she conceded. “I don’t really want to find another place as long as things are fine here. Probably safety in numbers.” she supposed. She glanced around the kitchen and shrugged, “There’s not much to do in here, wanna wander with me? See if we find anything interesting?” she offered, starting to head out of the kitchen.

She nodded in agreement. Finding another place would be stupid when this place is fine, as long as the people stick around. As Syd approached the door, Dylan stood up and moved out of the way so they wouldn’t run into each other. “Sure,” she said softly, agreeing to tour the building with her. She figured there wouldn’t be much to do, but it’d be nice to find something. “Lead the way.”

“Realistically, yes,” she agreed, having stayed by that  notion her entire life. Being alone was what protected her, but she knew that if she were to take advantage of this group, she needed to adjust that mindset a little bit. “But if we’re to stay within a group, perhaps we should try and focus on the good part of it.” It felt weird coming out of her mouth, but she let it come out anyway.

Well, she couldn’t argue with that. But Dylan knew how people like her were, and Alexia was definitely someone like her. Before she would commit to being hunting partners, she had to know one thing. “If we were attacked by something that would take the both of us to take down, would you help or run?”

Elliot nodded to the comment, being able to relate to it rather quickly. He was still getting used to the thought of being around so many people that he knew nothing about, but they were all survivors and that seemed to be mostly everything that mattered. “I hear you, I’ve been working on the cars for like a day but I’m pretty sure that’s what I’m gonna get stuck doing around here for a while, you know?” He asked, trying to act friendly, or rather be himself and try to stumble his way through making new friends.

“Probably, yeah,” she replied with a small smile on her face. That was how it usually was. Once you started doing something, you were expected to continue doing it. She didn't mind it for herself because she loved to be outside and hunt; she just hoped that other people weren't stuck doing a job they didn't like because that could put them all in jeopardy. “Do you enjoy working on cars?”

“…Oh. Well, if you see him, let me know. He’s my survival companion, goes wherever I go. I’m Harleen, by the way - Or Harley, I never knew which I liked better.”

“Will do.” If the dog follows her wherever she goes, then how did he get lost in the first place? “I’m Dylan.”
