“You won’t get my chocolate bar Syd….forget it “
“What?? I’ve got a ton of food to trade you for it, come on. You’re gonna deny me chocolate?”
“It isn’t a matter of what other people think. Don’t you care about how your skin looks, about being healthy?” This was something that had always perplexed her about smokers and her question was stemming from a place of genuine curiosity, her tone losing its judgmental edge.
Syd tipped her head; this woman was awfully concerned about this. “I figure I’ve survived worse for this long, I can probably stand to have a few cigarettes and not drop dead.” she said, a little smirk forming on her lips. “You been here long?” she offered with small upward nod.
Elliot made sure to make himself focus on his sister for a at least a little bit. It wasn’t something new that he spaced out when she talked to him but he had tried to get better about focusing after they were stranded together. “A rabbit? Nice, what did you have to give for something like that?” He asked and looked at her curiously. It was awfully convenient for her to work in the kitchen, it seemed like they always had at least something to eat.
Even though Syd still wasn’t, and probably was never going to be, completely over what had happened between them, she tried what she could to make things easier now that they were here. “Yeah, a fat one too.” she offered and shrugged. “A bag of apples. But it was worth it.” she assured as she waved for him to follow her. “C’mon, we can cook it now. No one’s gonna be in the kitchen until breakfast.”
“They could pay me in ammo and hookers and I still don’t think it would do me any good.” David shook his head. “Wow when I was a broke college student my dream was for a barter system and all this, but no.” He said. “This blows.”
Syd laughed slightly, “I’d be fine if they paid me in booze and cigarettes but I don’t think it’d get me very far in surviving.” she pointed out. “Though it’d make this place more enjoyable.” She shook her head, “This system now sucks.”
“It’s going to feel like I’m ripping it off for a minute, it’s burned pretty bad.” Randy told her defensively, looking up to the girl where he was trying to get a good gauge on the burn on her foot. “I’m gonna count down before I touch it again. Please do not kick me.”
Syd huffed in frustration, the top of her foot stinging like mad and she knew it was about to get worse. “Okay, I’ll try. But no guarantees.” she warned, running her hands over her face as she braced herself for whatever he was going to do next.
While Syd was getting the apples, Dylan took the rabbit out of her bag. The other girl had plenty of places to put the furry creature, but Dylan only had one bag designated for game. “Thanks,” she replied once the switch was made. The bag wasn’t big, but she could hear the apples inside collide as the bag moved.
Syd took the rabbit and looked it over; she wasn’t kidding about it being fat. She gave the smallest smile at the idea of eating it that night with Elliot and giving them something extra to look forward to. “Please doin’ business with ya.” she said with a nod, grabbing some paper to wrap the animal in. “See anything interesting while you were out there?”
Elliot looked away from the window he was looking out of after a few minutes, not realizing that they were standing there. It took him an extra few seconds to comprehend that they had been talking to him while he was busy day dreaming. “Sorry what was that? I wasn’t listening.” He cleared his throat and sat up a little straighter. “Did you say something about a raccoon?”
Syd got increasingly more annoyed as it was obvious he wasn’t listening. His daydreaming was something she should be used to by now; instead she just waited until he came back to reality. “A raccoon? No, a rabbit.” she said with a small laugh. “Dylan got me a rabbit so I was thinking we could make it tonight once people have settled down.”
Dylan caught the small potato with ease but set it back down on the table. “Save your potatoes,” she said, grabbing a bloodied bag from her waist and holding it up. “I’ve got your fat rabbit, and I’m here for my apples.”
Syd gave a single nod, “Alright. A deal’s a deal.” She bent down under the table and grabbed a small bag of apples, crossing the room to hand it to her. “Here ya go, I’ll take that.” she said as she grabbed the rabbit.
“I’ll give you one little potato.” Syd said as she tossed across the table where she was cooking. “Anything else you’ve gotta trade me for it, I’m not in the business of giving away free food here.”
“I’m sorry, okay?” Randy backed away. “Didn’t mean to bug you, you do not have to snap at me. I’m just trying to do my job here!”
“Well maybe you could do your job without it feeling like you’re ripping my foot off!” she snapped, trying not to pull it away from him as he cleaned it off.
“You know when you consider it it’s really not fair.” David spoke awkwardly trying to begin a dialogue. “I had healthcare bills flying out my fuckin’ asshole my whole life, what goods that done me now? I want my god damn millions back.”
“As great as millions of dollars would be, I don’t think it’ll do ya much good at this point.” Syd pointed out. “Maybe if they could pay you in medicine or food.”
“Actually caring about manners does not make me uptight.” Stella pointed out, still agitated. “And no, thank you. Have you read any scientific studies on what cigarettes do to your skin? The photos would horrify you.”
Syd let out an empty laugh and turned so her bad arm was facing the woman, “Yeah, pretty sure people are looking at this and not worrying about how my skin looks.” she pointed out flatly, taking another drag from her cigarette.
“Looking for something to do… someone to talk to; something to preoccupy me, whatever I can find. The school may be safe but it’s unbelievably boring,” she admitted with a shrug, letting out a small laugh. “I’m guessing you were on the same lines before you found that cigarette there.” Glancing down at the cigarette between the girl’s lips, she couldn’t help but screw her face at the sight of the smoke that came from it as she took a drag. Why anybody found sucking on something just to inhale all its disgusting ingredients as a form of relief left her bewildered.
Syd let out a small laugh, “Yeah. As great as this place is for safety it doesn’t offer a lotta entertainment. Gotta make your own.” she agreed as she motioned to the cigarette. She watched the woman’s face as she took another drag and did what she could not to roll her eyes, leaning against one of the lockers. “How long have you been here?” she asked with an upward nod of her chin.
Harley smiled gently at her. “I’m Harley. Got here a few nights ago, what about you, how long have you been here?” She asked. Conversation felt nice, normal, as if they were simply discussing their regular lives, forgetting, for a moment, the apocalyptic wasteland they were surrounded by.
Syd gave her a small upward nod, “Nice to meet ya. My brother and I got here not long ago from Wyoming. How far’d you go to get here?” she asked, knowing people here were from all over. It was kind of depressing to talk about the normal life everyone had before all of this happened, but it wasn’t like they could pretend it never happened.
Letting out an uneasy laugh, Evie looked slightly awkward as she thought of the idea of children smoking, wondering what the hell kind of school St. Bernard’s had been before the storm had hit. “I just think…” her voice faded as she let out a sigh. What was the point? The other woman was right. Who was she to give lectures about health and safety when danger was lurking around any corner; when a simple rain shower could burn holes in someone’s skin or a horde of mutants could easily rampage through the school and destroy every bit of security they had obtained. “You’re right,” she said defeatedly, “I guess you should just enjoy the little things like a cigarette while you still can.”
Syd waited a moment for the woman to come up with an argument, but when she didn’t and agreed instead the brunette pointed at her with a nod. “Exactly, now you’ve got it.” She took another drag from the cigarette, turning away from the woman slightly as she exhaled. “What brings you to the exciting back hallway of lockers?” she asked with an exaggerated sweep of her arm.
Stella felt a surge of injustice shoot through her at the rudeness. Coughing again she took a few steps back, equally shocked and angry. “That was uncalled for!” Her brow furrowed in irritated confusion. “You can fill your lungs with carcinogens as much as you’d like, but subjecting other people to second-hand smoke is an entirely different thing.”
Syd raised her eyebrows in amusement and let out a single chuckle. “Wow. You’re really wound tight there, aren’t ya blondie?” she said with a smirk, wondering how a girl that was this riled up about some smoke had managed to survive this long. Probably paid someone off to protect her. “You sure you don’t want some? Seems like you could use it.” she joked.
She nodded in agreement. Finding another place would be stupid when this place is fine, as long as the people stick around. As Syd approached the door, Dylan stood up and moved out of the way so they wouldn’t run into each other. “Sure,” she said softly, agreeing to tour the building with her. She figured there wouldn’t be much to do, but it’d be nice to find something. “Lead the way.”
Syd shrugged, it wouldn’t make a ton of difference if the girl decided to join her but she supposed it’d be nice to have some company at least. She walked past her and headed into the hallway, wandering aimlessly and looking around as she went. “I doubt there are many exciting things to do in an old school, but you never know I guess.” she offered as they headed through double doors that opened up to a gym.
