what’s wild is I still see just as much porn now. They managed to launch a mass exodus of black tumblr, sex workers, and fat folks with the trash ass algorithm. Regular selfies were getting flagged and profiles were getting taken down for no reason. It was some bullshit considering that the Russian porn bots basically took over from there.

They basically forced black people to leave, added a bunch of advertisements, and allowed white porn bots run amuk.

Tumblr is a massive piece of internet real estate. To make it more palatable to investors (white people with money looking to buy) they let black people freely do things that we do while they got to be voyeurs on safari in a behind the scenes view of how black people think, create, and talk. Like gentrifers coming to physical black spaces do

They did this to steal our ideas for ad campaigns, drive up engagements, and provide gateways to media big shots to both exploit and take credit for our labor in magazines, tv shows etc.

Once it looked like yahoo was ready to buy frfr they started making moves that sounded like they were making the space safer and better for everyone. Just like when cross walks, no turn in red signs, bike lanes, grocery stores, and bus stops turn up in black neighborhoods that never had them before.

However those measures were about raising the price of real estate, and signaling to white folks that it’s safe to move in. So just like gentrification off line, the measures meant to help “ glitched”, and well-meaning but definitely self serving white folks got black people kicked out of an online community they established, curated, defined, and impacted the world from for years.

This was wild to read but in all honesty, this makes a lot of sense.

It just never sat right to me that the porn ban always singled out black and brown people. Especially black and brown fat people. Tumblr admins tried to say that it was a miscalculation of how the algorithm perceived nudity.  

It made no sense because non white people with clothes on most of their bodies were still getting their content hidden. My selfies got hit a lot and I have zero nudes. 

Niggas were getting regular ass pictures with them and their kids flagged. And meanwhile, white porn bots were hacking our profiles, and spamming with white born ads and pics. So while a lot of black tumblr left because of the porn ban, a lot left in frustration of their pictures that weren’t sexual at all being flagged. 

How did it recognize our flesh as bad but white flesh as not? how the fuck?
