*stephen maturin at coachella in breeches, stockings and a powdered wig, pale and sweating profusely* I am but a humble ship's physician, but would any of you know how an enquiring scientist such as myself could obtain some acid? Sure, I am a mere naval surgeon, but could any of you fine youths point a pharmacological dilettante such as myself in the direction of some fucking acid?

Master and Commander, Chapter 12
Post Captain in which Stephen and Jack share a cottage. every single phrase in this chapter is gold
When you are high on laudanum and its the Napoleonic wars and you have to smuggle your very noticeable 6 ft 3 british bear of a best friend through the French countryside...so logically... Bear costume.
Fucking hate it when I sign up to be this guy's ship surgeon and his first lieutenant recognizes me from the Devil's Sacrement. Fml. SMH my head.
aubreyyy 🥺
Idk about y’all but I was initially confused about how a topmast/topgallantmast is “swayed up” at sea when it goes higher than the highest point on the ship. This is the best demo I’ve seen that simplifies the process.
The mast is first lifted from horizontal on the deck to stand up parallel against the lower mast and then guided up straight because it goes through a hole in the mast cap, which is attached to the top of the lower mast:
And here it is in action:
Jack and his new best friend... the enemy officer of the ship he just captured...
This is btw one of my fav things he does.. Switching from the manic murderous glee of hunt/boarding/battle. To the excitement of meeting the enemy.
Some people have died and the ships are damaged, but its so good to be alive (he cant think of the dead right now, will cry for them later). And the very manic energy, although a little bit subdued, is making him seem a little bit insane, a little bit like he had too much fun, like if all of that was just some kind of game to him.
And with that he meets his prisoners/new friends, trying to accomodate them in a way he wishes he was treated if he got captured... and its not just the gentlemanly way prisoners of war should be treated, he really genuinely wants to befriend these new exciting people...his peers.
"Please keep your sword, I insist. :) Will you join me for dinner? You would make most happy. :) That maneuver you have performed while you tried to escape me was so skillfully and beautifully done! (Please talk strategies with me!!) Do you play music, sir? Etc. Etc.
The fact that those people might not like him based on silly things such as politics, or that they just watched a good number of their men die, or just that they lost, barely enters his mind at that moment.
Its just so good to be alive.

Christy-Pallière and his new best friend… the enemy officer of the ship he just captured…
Got to the classic HMS Surprise passage
Extremely tickled by Aubrey measuring snake length by FATHOM.
The Montpellier snake in fact does not usually exceed 1 fathom long (1.8m).
if nobody got him his ciggys got him ☝️
There is not a single day that I go without thinking about his hair
