ASL lessons (the punk way)

It was the first time Lex had left Ethan alone with her younger sister and Ethan realized the kid had a pretty big issue.

She didn’t know sign language.

“You’re telling me,” Ethan said. “You go nonverbal sometimes. Your sister is dating a deaf kid. And she didn’t teach you any sign language?”

The eight year old nodded. “Sorry.”

“Nah, dont be sorry. I’m gonna teach you,” they declared, turning to face her. “First thing’s first, your name. Can you spell it?”

“H-A-N-N-A-H,” Hannah said proudly.

“Great, so H is this,” Ethan demonstrated. “Now A, now N. Show me.”

“Hanneh,” Hannah sighed.

“Almost.” They fixed her hand.

“Hannah.”

“That’s perfect, Banana!”

Throughout the afternoon, Ethan taught Hannah basic ASL. By the time Lex got home, Hannah could sign “Lex”, “Ethan”, “Hannah”, “food”, “water”, “bathroom”, “deaf”, and a few other words she might need.

“Hey, babe,” Lex kissed Ethan’s forehead. “How was she?”

“Great. Taught her some sign language,” they replied.

“Can Ethan babysit me again tomorrow?” Hannah asked.

When Ethan nodded, Lex agreed. “Sure, Banana. Good day?”

“Good day. I like Ethan.”

Lex smiled at her boyfriend. “Yeah, I like him too.”
