PASE Summer Teaching Fellows
Attached find an opportunity for college students for a paid summer fellowship (Summer 2014) through the Partnership for After School Education (PASE). Teaching fellows will be placed in NYC summer camps to provide curricula support, academic enrichment activities, and tutoring services to youth (K-8). Edgies Abroad! Si Yun (Colgate Class of '14) in Australia
Si Yun Zou, formerly of Midwood HS, studied abroad in Australia in the spring of her junior year. Here is a brief account of what that experience was like for her.
1. What was is it like experiencing college in a foreign country?
College in a foreign country was a wonderful experience. It has given me new perspective on college life, especially because I went from enrolling at a small liberal arts College to a large University in Australia. The dynamic was completely different. School was also not as challenging as it was in the States so I had more free time to hangout with friends and explore the country. I think I learned the most through my travels and people I've met. 2. What made you feel comfortable so far away from home?
The study abroad program I did was through Colgate University. Given that this program as through my school I went abroad with one of my professor and eighteen other students. Having this group of students and a professor in a foreign country really made me feel a lot more comfortable with being so far away from home. It also really helped that my best friend went abroad with me because I knew she would be there to support me. 3. What were the most important lessons you learned?
The most important lesson I learn when I was abroad was to never let opportunities slip and to say yes to everything! (Well logically of course) I got to experience so much of the Australian culture because I was so open to do anything. Being abroad taught me how to be patient and calm. I matured so much from being in an unfamiliar environment. 4. What was the best part? Worst part? Most fun? Least fun?
The best part of my time abroad was meeting Australian I can call my friends for life. Everyone in Australia is extremely friendly and outgoing. It was also amazing that I got to live right next to the beach! I was literally 5 minutes away! The worst part was maybe the bugs. I went abroad during our winter so it was Australia's summer so there were tons and tons of insects everywhere. The most fun was when I went skydiving near by so I got a great view of the beach and Wollongong. 5 .What would you do differently if you had to do it over?
Nothing! 6. Would you do it over again? Where might you go instead?
Yes, in a heartbeat. I wouldn't want to go anywhere else instead! The country was amazing and I am so glad I chose to go there for my study abroad experience. 7. If a student is considering studying abroad, what's your best piece of advice? My best piece of advice is to step out of your comfort zone and stay positive even if sometimes things don’t turn out the way you want it to be. In addition, meet native students! I had such a wonderful time also because I met so many Australians who showed me around. They taught me Aussie slangs, the tim tam slam, how to eat vegemite and so much more! One of my Australian friends whom I became very close with invited me to visit her home for a weekend. I got to see firsthand how a Australian family functions! Also travel, travel, travel!!! Its the only chance you get go all over a specific country using you're school's money!!

2. Your Advisor’s Office - if you haven’t found this, you might be taking the wrong classes.
3. The Laundry - if you haven’t found this, you might smell funny.
4. The Library - if you haven’t found this, you might not be as productive as you could be.
5. Career Services - if you haven’t found this, you might not get a summer job/internship
