I couldn’t stop smiling lol.
Crushing so hard right now. I can’t remember the last time I felt this way. I’m excited. I smile for no reason. Every other thought is you. When your texts come in I feel happy. I daydream about you too. I can’t wait to see you again.
Today I made a new goal for myself and I cannot believe how much happier having such a huge goal made me.
The other day I spoke to my coworker and friend, Vi. I went into her office and closed the door. I told her how I’d been feeling. Dating is hard. Finding someone new is hard. And I think about my ex sometimes and it makes me sad. The other day I looked at my ex’s instagram. I hadn’t seen any of it for at least a month and a half. I was surprised to see a ton of new posts. All the photos screamed, “I’ve moved on.” He’s different than he was with me. He took photos with other people and smiled (he never did that with me). He took photos of flowers that he received from some guy, and called him “future bae” (he never took photos of the flowers I’ve given him and never once called me anything like that). He took photos of a strawberry shaped ring that he bought years ago, noting that he would never had worn anything like that before but that now he was comfortable to do so. He held back when we were together.
I can’t blame him for moving on. Part of me wishes that I was indifferent. Part of me wishes that he was sad for a little while longer. At least until I got my own life and feelings together. I mean--he’s the one who cheated. It’s not that I want to get back together with him. In fact, it’s just the opposite. We were bad for each other. It would have happened sooner or later. My uncle, who is very into horoscopes looked into my ex’s and my compatibility. He told me, “You will be very good for [ex], you will help him grow. But he won’t be good for you.” I kind of brushed it off at the time, because I was content with the relationship. Ignorance is bliss.
Vi told me that what I was feeling was normal. She told me that dating is hard but that I'll find someone. She told me a story about her friend, Z, who was 28 and two years into a relationship. Z had a goal of getting married by 30--there were no “if’s” “and’s” or “but’s” about it. The only problem is that when Z initiated a discussion about marriage, her boyfriend seemed reluctant. He wasn’t ready to commit. He liked things as they were. Z made a difficult decision and broke it off with him. He couldn’t give her what she wanted. And Z had to start from scratch again. The only difference now was that she was only one and a half years away from being 30. Time was running out. A few months later Z met a guy and began dating. They immediately hit it off. Fast forward a year later and she was happily engaged and married by the close of her 30th year.
Hearing this story inspired something inside me. I want to be married to the man of my dreams by 30. I’m putting it out there. I’m putting it out into the universe. I’m excited. I can't wait. It’s really given me something to look forward to. Something to fight for. Something to work towards. This is my goal. For some reason, just knowing that someone out there is the man I’m going to marry one day makes me feel not so alone.
This isn’t to say that I’m going to marry the first man who shows interest. I still have all of my experiences to draw from. I’m just saying that there is someone out there who will meet that criteria and more. I’ve learned so much about myself. I know what I want now. And I’m determined to find it. Watch out, world! Here I come!
A Friend Leaves People around the office are getting sick. We’re all closing the doors to our offices. Something is going around, and for us, it’s like the plague. Everyone knows that even if they get sick their work will not get any lighter. It’s scary. I started feeling a bit under the weather today as well. I went home early to work, but instead I’m on tumblr. I have to bill at least five more hours today. That’s my goal at least. It will give me 9 hours total. It will help make up for some of the time lost last week.
Last week, my good friend and coworker left the firm. She decided litigation was not for her. I completely understand her decision and support her 100%. But I am sad that she isn’t there anymore. She really gave balance to the workplace. It feels different. She was a realist. She didn’t sugarcoat her words. If she felt a certain way she would say it. If there was something wrong, she would listen. She would call it like it really is. She would tell me that I’m being dramatic. Which, admittedly, I was. But even though she sounded harsh, it never came off that way. It always came off like she truly cared. And she said these things while her own work was burying her, making her stay late into the night, causing her to miss trivia night and barre classes.
We would have after-hours “story time.” We started with The Little Prince, which I now love. Story time would be something to look forward to at the end of the day. “Is it story time?” people would ask as they poked their head into her office. “You didn’t start story time without me, did you?” It became the norm. And she was very good at reading out loud. I always felt engaged. And when we reached a good stopping point, or she was tired of reading, she’d say as matter of fact, “The End.”
It started as a joke. “One day I’m just going to up and leave!” she’d say. We would laugh, “you can’t do that to us!” And then as the days went on she started to say it more and more. “I don’t know if I can do this anymore.” “I think about work and I think, ‘what’s the point?’” “I cried last night.” She did this for her. And she knows what’s best for her.
She told us the day before she gave notice. “Guys, I have something to tell you.” “Noooo!” I yelled, before she could even finish. Another coworker began to cry after holding it in for a good while. Tissues were passed. I was distraught, but resilient. I knew this day would come, just not so soon. “Are we still doing story time?” I asked. “I don’t know if you can handle it right now.” “I can! I really want to listen.” She agreed. She pulled out Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s stone, and leaned back into her chair. As I looked at her, I realized that she was really leaving. The story time that I had become accustomed to was now going to end. My friend was leaving. In a moment, I imagined what it would be like without her: I stop by her office, as I usually do before a breakdown, and realize that her office is empty and that she is no longer there. She didn’t get through even one sentence before I yelled, “Nooo!” and put my hands to my head. I covered my eyes and before I knew it I was crying. I was so confused. I did not expect to cry at all. “Are those fake tears or are those real tears?” she asked. I moved my hands away from my face for only a moment, but a tear streamed down my face. “Oh. Those are real tears,” she said.
Work won’t be the same without you. I will miss you. And I will root for you. Good luck out there!
Looking towards the future
A new chapter.
I feel so broken.
