           always  quick  to  defensiveness   :   YOU ?   annoying .   irritating .   grating .          &   EACH  TIME  THAT  HE  SPEAKS ,   none  of  the  words  successfully  leave  the  venomous  organ  that  is  his  tongue .   the  breathless  sensation  of  vocal  cords  stolen  comes  with  a  DULL  THROB  that  jamil  almost ,   almost  mistakes  for  another  migraine .

    a  second  try ,   thankfully ,   does  not  yield  similar  fruitless  results ,           ❝   really  troublesome .   ❞          tongue  clicks  against the  roof  of  his  mouth ,   brows  furrowed .   although  the  viper  did  not  know  why  he  had  hesitated  so  before ,   he’s  now  putting  an  all - too - typical  END  to  the  teasing .

  bubbles of giggles and faerie dust,   hiding between bookshelves and under the blinding phosphene of a lone window. the scholar watches as eos flies from her hand to her shoulder, playing with her curly locks━ the faery’s version of hide & seek. she laughs a bit as she feels her wings flutter against her cheek, she peeks at eos who’s angrily pouting at the other near the window. eyun sighs and signals to her faerie to calm down. gathering her words & lifting to the tips of her toes, she taps the youth on the shoulder.    “… uhm, sorry but can you move a little to the right? you’re blocking the sunlight in that corner over there.”she smiles and falling back to her normal height, then turns back to eos, softly nudging her head with her fingertips.  “  this little one here━ likes basking the sunlight a bit too much.   ” 

       so  rare  of  him  to  be  this  ENTHRALLED ,          leather  bound  BOOK  OF  SPELLS  holding  his  full  attention  prisoner   ;    it  only  FREED  by  the  genteel  tap  on  young  magicians’  shoulder ,   shattering  concentration  like  glass ,   JOLTING  AWAY  FROM  TOUCH  as  though  it  a  live  wire  in  split  -  second  defense ,   the  viper  -  like  instinct  to  attack  to  escape .

       ❝   ah ,   ❞            body  eases  up  but  a  moment  later ,   blinking  away  the  surprise  as  charcoal  eyne  shifts  first  to  the  scholar  than  their  small(er)  flying  companion  by  their  side   –––      a  faerie ,   bearing  resemblance  to  the  rather  petty   &   mischievous  ones  back  in  his  academy .

 “  this little one here━ likes basking the sunlight a bit too much.   ”

         like  a  cat ,     jamil  thinks  to  himself  until  the  moment  strangers’  gaze  meets  with  his  again   &   he  realizes  he’s  spoken  it  ALOUD .   as  though  in  hopes  of  counteracting  the  upcoming  fluster ,   he  -  serpent  is  quick  to  make  distant  between  them ,   giving  them  their  ample  room  for  sunlight .

      ❝   is this alright ?   ❞           settling  down  with  a  quiet  clearing  of  his  throat ,   the  serpent  speaks  again ,   if  at  least  to  satiate  his  curiosities   :            ❝   your   ...   friend .   are they a flora fairy ?   ❞

it’d been a spur of the moment decision, to come. 

he’s doesn’t care for big gatherings, especially ones that are bound to be full of loud, annoying people - but scaramouche dislikes boredom even more, which brings him here. 

adorned with a mask he picked up along the way, he stands off to the side, a flute filled with some sort of alcohol in his hand. he doesn’t drink from it, though, too busy watching the dancers on the dancefloor - eyes trained on a particular couple as they twirl around.

just a little more - 

then, just like he predicted, the man, clearly more than a little drunk, trips and steps on the woman’s flimsy looking dress and causes it to rip. he’s too far away to actually hear what they’re saying, but they’re both obviously embarrassed, and it’s enough to keep him somewhat entertained, for now.

he snickers as he watches them make a hasty escape, and then immediately snaps his head over to where a stranger has stopped nearby. he raises a brow, as though daring them to make a comment.

        foolish ,   to  attempt  a          WALTZ  after  purposefully  impairing  oneself  with  ways  of  poor  body  coordination   &   even  poorer  balance   ;     it  was  equally  foolish ,   to  agree  to  a  waltz  from  a  clearly  intoxicated  fellow .   ANYBODY  WITH  FORETHOUGHT  COULD  HAVE  PREDICTED  THE  FOLLOWING  UNFORTUNATE  EVENTS .

       &   yet ,   akin  to  a  train  wreck ,   jamil  viper  could  not  pull  his  gaze  away   ––––      something  the  serpent  shared  with  the  stranger  who  nearest  to  him .

      THE  CHALLENGING  LOOK  DOES  NOT  escape  him .   it’s  not  difficult  to  predict  what  is  expected   :     slow  -  blinking  lashes  accompanying  the  honey   &   courtesy  of  his  voice ,   imitating  something  just  barley  more  polite  than  reticence  ––––     jamil  bends  his  cheek  to  one  shoulder .   TONIGHT ,   JUST  TONIGHT ,   the  serpentine  masks  brings  about  the  comforts  of  anonymity ,   &   so  the  vulture  of  an  embittered  personality  begins  to  circle  the  fresh  corpse  of  empathy .

       ❝   ...   honestly ,   i’m a little surprised she did not strike him .   she looked as red as the multiple glasses of wine he had before stepping on the dance floor .   ❞           charcoal  gaze  slides  to  his  companion   &   he  exhales  sharply  in  brief  amusement ,   lip  pulled  up  to  lay  bare  the  ghost  of  a  smile .            ❝   she called him a whole slew of colorful words as she left .   ❞          ––––      were  his  lip  -  reading  to  be  perfectly  accurate ,   but  of  what  did  that  matter ?

        ❝   i can say without hesitation         that i have NOT .   staying out for an extended period of time in the rain is just asking to become sick !   were you paying attention to what i just said ?  ❞          arms  fold  atop  his  chest ,   it  appeared  no  matter  how  much  the  snake  disguised  himself  with  niceties ,   at  the  end  he  would  always  return  to  his  habit  of  nagging  those  around  him .   anyone  reasonable  would  have  zoned  out  when  faced  with  such  a  long ,  droning  spiel .
