Moon Catcher
Victo Ngai
Sorry for falling off the face of earth for a while- I have been working on some really exciting projects which unfortunately won’t come out until nest year. In the mean time, here is my latest cover for PLANSPONSOR! For those of you who follow me, you can probably tell by now that I sneak in every opportunity to draw fish and water. Recently someone asked me about this preference and I gave it some thoughts. I think I love drawing things that allows much stretch of stylization and design but still recognizable for what it is. Everyone of us can have our own drastically different ways to interpret waves but none of us can be wrong.
This piece was one of the 8 selected into Society of Illustrators 56 Annual exhibit and book, I will do a post about all the pieces that have gotten in one of these days…Mega thanks to AD SooJin!

Séance
I’m excited to have my piece in Daniel Krall’s black & white show Séance, that’s currently on display at MICA. I had such little time to do this, so I decided to re-work a halloween poster I created that didn’t quite turn out. I liked this guy too much for him to go to waste.. There’s a colored version as well:

Accessory assignment for lifestyles.
The girl tending to the plants in this beautiful illustration makes me think of Beatrice, a character from the short story, 'Rappacini's Daughter' by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Beatrice is immune to the venom of the plants grown by her father Rappacini, but she is imbued with the same poison.
Wadjda
VIcto Ngai
This piece runs in the current New Yorker magazine. It is for the movie review of “Wadjda”, the first feature film ever made by a female Saudi director Haifaa al-Mansour, entirely shot in Saudi Arabia.
Wadjda, a 11 year old living in the capital Riyadh, dreams of owning a bicycle so she can race against a boy named Abdullah from the neighborhood. However, riding bikes is frowned upon for girls. Without the support of her parents, Wadjda started raising money on her own, including joining a koran recital competition. You can watch the trailer of this heart-warming and ground breaking movie here.
Many thanks to AD Jordan for this wonderful assignment!
