For my non-JP friends, you might be wondering what the heck is up with the weird fish/woman thing that's all over JP Twitter.

That, my friends, is an Amabie.

It's a mermaid (or merman) w/ 3 legs, that emerges from the sea and prophesies either an abundant harvest or an epidemic.

There was a story about an Amabie that showed itself in Edo-era Kumamoto, and it delivered a prophecy that after six years of abundant harvest, an epidemic will come.

It went on to say "if disease spreads, show a picture of me to those who fall ill and they will be cured."

That's why it's all over JP Twitter. A kimo-kawaii anti COVID19 ward. 🤣
