To begin, can you introduce yourself in a few words?
Itti: I’m Tomoyuki Ichikawa, and my artist name is ltti. I make music and DJ in Tokyo. I have been making Drum‘n’Bass (DNB) for 5 years and my EP has been released by “Different Music”, a music label based in the UK. In Japan, I founded a music label called “Subdued Records” with my friends. I work towards the goal to grow the music scene in Japan and the Far East.
Can you explain how you got into music?
Itti: My hair cutter at the time took me to a night club when I was 18, and I was so surprised that people were dancing to music without vocals. I was like, what are people doing here? Once I got used to going to night clubs, I wanted to try DJing, and after I started working as a DJ, my desire changed to wanting to make music.
And how did you get into DNB?
Itti: It is because of the party “06S” which is held in club WOMB in Tokyo. That was the first time I came across DNB. The DJing by Roni Size, who came to the party as a guest DJ; and DJ AKi, a resident DJ at the party; drove me to the world of DNB.
How have you developed your taste of music?
Itti: Not only music taste, but paintings, pictures and art in general. I prefer something imperfect, like something sad, broken or gross. I liked the works by Zdzisław Beksiński, for example. I even bought his painting book when I was in university! Well I got into music from electronic sound but later I’ve got into more minimal sound like tech house or techno. Now because of all of these factors I’m making dark and minimal DNB.
From which artists have you been inspired?
Itti: dBride from “Exit Records”. I respect his way of making music but also his way of being an artist. For example in his project called “New Forms”, he makes music with local producers from around the world and shows them at the party. He has these kinds of interesting projects a lot. “New Forms” is held in Japan this year. So he will come two more times. I hope I can have a music session with him. Arkaik has also been inspiring me so much. I invited him to the “Subdued Records”’ party last year and we travelled, talked and DJed together from Nagoya to Tokyo. That was the first time I felt what it is like to live the life of an artist and see how they think. Not like a person who lives in another world but like a brother. It was an unforgettable experience for me.
If you had to choose 3 tracks that represent your music taste, what would they be?
Itti:１. dBridge Vs Skeptical - No Discipline
When you listen to this with your eyes closed, this track will take you on a short trip. The way of adding new sound is perfect. This track taught me a lot.
２. Ruffhouse - Bypass
This is the first track by Ruffhouse I listened to. This taught me what it is like when DNB has a techno sound.
３. Arkaik - Steve
This track is very heavy but still stays in his control. It reminds me of how your style bring together is important. I use this track often when I am DJing, and I’m sure people like it.
How did you meet “Different music”, the music label you released your EP with?
Itti: I checked them often and sometimes I’ve used their music when I DJ. Last year I posted a short movie on Instagram that showed when I played in “DOMMUNE”, which is a live streaming website. Then the owner of the label, Chris Dexta DM’d me and offered me to release from their label. I thought as a single but he said as an EP! I was so excited because hardly any Japanese indie artist’s can release their EP through a UK label. I’ve never met him but I hope we will meet and hug soon.
Do you have any advice for beginners?
Itti: I'm in no position to say this, but if I had to say...think out of the box. I t
hink when you just started producing, you want to put sound on a grid but this makes sound more monotonous and makes it easier to get bored. To create groove, you should put sound not exactly on grid but somewhere near, like where you feel is good. Also I recommend you to make a music sample by yourself. If you use an original sample, like recorded sound and noise around you or when you are travelling; you can add originality to your track and express what you felt at that moment. In this EP, there is a song called “Djembe” which I made with sampling African instruments Jambe.
Let’s talk about production. How do you make a track? What kind of music software, PC, audio speaker, audio interface do you use?
Itti: For software for making music, I use Live9 by Abelzon with Mac Book Pro 15 inch. At home, I’m using audio speaker, SC207 EVE AUDIO. For audio interface, I’m using Duet for iPad & Mac. Also I’m using S2 by subpac because I can’t use subwoofer as I’m living in an apartment.
Are you going to gigs in the next months?
Itti: I’m going to have a gig at “New Forms”, the project by dBridge and Kabuki in August. Also I’ll be at “HANGOVER”, the party represents Tokyo’s DNB scene. For more info, I’ll let you know through my social media account.
Finally, what about the future projects? Can you tell us your goals in the future?
Itti: I want to get in the DNB scene more overseas, get opportunities to play there and meet people in each local scene. If I have the chance, I would love to produce music together with overseas artists. Once I get in the scene, I want to connect them to the Japanese DNB scene. There are a lot of emerging talents here but unfortunately there’s not so much opportunity.
Who are those “emerging talents” in Japan? And who do you want to have music session or make music with?
Itti: Maozon, TLOC and BADMYTH from Subdued Records. Also DJ MASA and KMTR who are the same age as me are “emerging talents”.
I can’t say all of the artists who I want to collaborate with because there’s so many, but Alix Perez, Arkaik, dBrdge, Skeptical and Mauoq are among them.

SELECTED Drum&Bass Night by East Forms is a new event focused on the development of Vladivostok’s dnb scene. Our mission is to showcase the unique and broad spectrum of the genre - from uplifting liquid funk to the the depths of halftime, classic jungle to nu-school techstep.
