DIY: Get away for the summer without leaving NYC.
Not everyone can afford an all-inclusive, luxurious escape this summer, especially a New Yorker. Between coffees costing you $5, lunches averaging $15, the climbing metrocard prices and having to choose between rent or your next meal, any money youāve saved is literally for a torrential downpour. Any money youāve earned is your survival fund. But with that in mind, being a New Yorker also means hustle and bustle, anxiety, little to no sleep and high levels of stress! If anyone deserves a vacation, itās us! Weāre in a tight spot here! So what can we do? Iāve comprised a helpful list that we can both use to find peace and tranquility this summer before its back to the harsh winter grind hits.Ā
It should be obvious, but one of the quickest and easiest ways to get away without going too far is: Massage! 1. It starts at home!Ā
Turn your home or a favorite room (or corner if youāre shoulder to shoulder with roommates) into a tranquil oasis! Mine is the bathroom. Itās easy to be undisturbed; I love to soak away my troubles in regular table salt when Epsom salt isnāt an option and an oil of my choice.If you can get the Dead Sea Salt from the health food store-splurge... its from Israel's Dead sea! 2 cups and 15 minutes = relaxation and peace. Youāll feel better so just create the time. An hour in a Zen space can make a world of difference.
Decorate your preferred area with scented candles to enhance the experience, or if youāre really artsy and creative, holiday lights or lanterns! Soothing soft glowing lights in the dark can really affect your mood.Ā Ā
While youāre at it, you can whip up a facial scrub or mask that will give you the ājust got back from vacayā glow. Using your favorite cream with 2 teaspoons of sugar can be a delightful exfoliating experience. Coconut oil combined with sugar and lemon mixed into a paste can also make for a great mask.Ā For a coarser scrub, almond meal or oatmeal really gets down in there! These combinations can be stored in a jar in a cool dry place for weeks of repeated use. Even water and coffee grounds can perk you right up! Ā You can also enjoy a mini sauna by boiling your favorite flavor of tea (herbal works best, I love mint!), and pouring it into a deep bowl. Once youāre comfortably seated, drape a towel over your head and let the aroma and steam soothe you and cleanse your skin!Ā Ā
Incense is also a big help and thereās a wide (and cheap, check amazon or your local street vendor) range of delightful scents that create the experience you want.Ā If you donāt want to spend any money, get creative! We wouldnāt recommend draping any fabric over lights for fire safety reasons, but you can always paint your light bulbs a nice color or simply take one or two out of the fixture to reduce the brightness. Play some music! Lay a blanket and a pillow or two out and just relax!Ā
2. GET OUTSIDE!
I canāt express how therapeutic and grounding it is to walk aimlessly for an hour (or even longer) and listen to music. It helps with any negative emotions I want to release.Ā Walking through your local park or even getting off a few stops earlier to walk home is not only healthy for your heart, it can ease tension in your mind, putting you in a mindset to take your time and enjoy the feeling of being free andĀ in control while taking in things you may have not noticed before!Ā
Thereās always something fun to do in NYC over the summer. Check out these affordable/free events happening in the Upper Eastside! Carl Schurz Park has free concerts. Check out the free events at the local library and Bryant Park as well! Remember as a NY resident when you show your ID the museum donation is up to you!
FLY SOLO
Have a healthy selfish day! Leave the family home for a while! Get reacquainted with yourself and maybe meet new people! FRY NOW, PAY LATER
I am the biggest fan of summer heat, or any heat! I love the sun in ways most do not. On 90 degree days I am out when the sun is highest in the sky and come September I am bronze beyond recognition.Ā āThe sun on your skinā is a popular, romanticized expression at this point. Tanning makes its fad comebacks ever so often. Generally, basking in the sun is a wonderful feeling. And Iām sure we all live for the impending beach and boardwalk days. But what happens? The sun after all isnāt simply a light in the sky, or a big ball of gas. Itās a UV laser beam that torches us every day! With recent environmental issues, even more than ever before weāre sensitive to the suns magnificence. There is such a thing as safe sun exposure, and the dose of vitamin D does us all good. Sunlight improves moods, and gets your energy levels up too! On the other hand, the sun can be like holding an open flame to your skin.Ā There are layers to the skin and the effects can be catastrophic! Letās take a look!Ā Ā
The skin has 5 layers in all, UVA rays penetrate the outer layers of the skin (epidermis) reaching the deepest layers (dermis), where several cellular structures will be affected. UVB rays are shorter and more harmful than UVA rays, although the latter reach more depth (dermis).Ā
Ā ā Epidermis: (the layer we see every day) is affected by UVB rays, being the main cause of Sun burns and DNA damage, increasing the risk of cancer. Over time, the UV rays can damage the elastin in our skin. Just under the epidermis, is elastin: highly elastic protein that helps our skin snap back so to speak after stretching and contracting (like when we smile). Elastin works in tandem with collagen which is spread throughout the body providing strength and flexibility.Ā
ā Dermis:Ā the deep layer of the skin where the UVA rays reach, penetrating the epidermis. Due to these rays, the structure of the dermis is influenced, affecting the collagen, which is responsible for the maintenance of a young skin. Thus, this will cause a lack of elasticity in the skin creating visibility of wrinkles. The more time spent in the sun, the more wrinkly and leathery youāll become!Ā
Life comes with exposure to a number of elements invisible and visible to us and they all affect us in adverse ways. So wrinkles and calluses and crowās feet are just a part of the game. Above all, when dealing with the sun, our greatest concern and most dangerous risk is skin cancer.
There are 3 major types of skin cancer: Basal cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Melanoma.Ā
Basal cell carcinoma is the easiest to treat and least likely to spread. It looks like a āpearly waxy bumpā or it might be a āflat brown lesionā. Squamous cell carcinoma can be treated easily if it is acted upon in its earliest stages and is characterized by a āfirm red pimple or nodule that wonāt go away, and might be covered in a scaly patchā. The two types mentioned are commonly mistaken for blemishes or bites so itās always best to have it looked at! Melanoma is the most aggressive and serious form ofĀ cancer. Characterized by āmoles that bleed, itch or change shape and colorā itās easy to spot and may also have red or white speckles. While there is no known number or times of exposure it takes to develop these cancers, a study by brown university suggest that 5 serious sun burns increases the chance of a melanoma diagnosis by 80%. The life expectancy once diagnosed with melanoma is 5 years! Tanning beds only double these chances.Ā
Letās protect ourselves! While there is no cure for skin cancer, we can take preventative measures so we donāt fry now and end up paying later!Ā Good Housekeeping recommends a number of great sunblock products that help prevent sunburn, which will lower your chances of developing skin cancer! Rainbow Sandwich cravings š Taking it back to a time when I was living in the real world and could access fresh vegetables whenever I wanted. Iām currently living on a remote island in the South Pacific for six months, and the fresh food supplies are dwindling. But all itās not lost, Iām still grateful to have frozen vegetables and sometimes a harvest from the veggie garden.
