His smile took her breath away. That smile made all of their previous pain easier to bear and made the future easier to cope with. Seeing him smile like that was a moment she never thought could have been a possibility. Here she was, though, living their dreams together.
“I can’t see how the baby wouldn’t know. You’re quite settled on a girl, aren’t you?” she laughed, carefully tucking a piece of his hair back. Her fingers brushed over a scar from the attack in the sewers–the mutts, the explosion. He was missing for so long, lost in a Rebel hospital. Then she got the call–her husband would come home with her. Despite the scarring and the injuries that he felt so insecure about, Annie had never been so happy to welcome him home.
“Do you want to try and go back to bed with me?” she offered, voice quiet and soft as not to startle any dark thoughts she couldn’t sense in the depths of his eyes. If he needed space, she’d give it to him, but she was still his wife and he was still half of her soul and she still worried about him.
Their new world still held the nightmares of yesterday. They had a new future to heal in, but their pain and wounds ran deep. They had each other and their growing baby.
“I’m very settled,” he agreed with a quiet laugh. He couldn’t shake the idea of having a baby girl to care for. Perhaps it was the fact that he had grown up with all brothers that made the idea of a little girl so wonderful. “But even if she’s a he, I’ll love him just the same.”
He was quiet at her suggestion, still lost in the thoughts of their daughter/son. The healing process was a difficult one, but it was a step he was willing to take in order to be a good dad. Not just a father, but a daddy. He had to learn to be strong again for his baby. The baby would help him to heal, he knew, just as Annie had. New scars meant new nightmares, and his face was still so raw from the pain of the invasion into the Capitol.
“Okay.” His agreement was soft, and his eyes were slow to trail back up to hers. His hands managed to find hers. He knotted their fingers together and squeezed, seeking reassurance there. “We can try.” He wanted to try because he loved being near her. It helped them both.
Honestly, Finn would give Annie anything she wanted if she asked in that way. Delicate and caring. Annie worried about him, even when he didn’t want her to.
