How heartbreaking Vash98’s breakup was
In the manga, Vash spent decades patiently waiting for Knives to change while following him, until he physically had no way to hold him back. While Vash98? He also waited, not as long as manga Vash, but far longer than he expected. Knives had only said, “Wait here for a little while.”
How long is “a little while”? A minute, an hour, a night? Vash must have believed Knives will come back soon. And he believed that for a year.
For a whole year, every second was “just one more minute,” “just a little longer,” and Knives would return. Because what's the point of waiting, if not to see him again? Isn’t hope the very thing that motivate the wait? The moment Vash can finally see him again, that’s what gives waiting meaning. And Vash did wait. Until the end.
No matter how strained their relationship had become, the moment Vash saw Knives again and called his name, there was a flash of joy, brief and bright, like fireworks, then gone.
Fireworks are beautiful, even if they stayed in the sky all day, they'd still be beautiful. However, because they fade so quickly, people have to stare at them every precious moment they've got. Vash too, with every precious moment he's got, waiting for that single, flickering moment, his own piece of fragile, quick fading firework.
As if afraid the audience might not grasp how painful this was, Knives even spelled it out himself and used it to mock Vash. Why do you still wait and follow me? Because you're hopeless, aren't you?
He didn't even need to use any harsh words of scolding. It hurt because it was true. It was too true that it's cruel to Vash.
I could have stopped waiting for you. I could have left halfway. But I didn't. Because I was hopeless.
Without you, I was hopeless.
You even know that so well.
You even use it against me.
In the end, it was Vash who chose to leave, right at the moment he had finally gotten what he longed for.
He wasn't abandoned, wasn't chained down, wasn’t kidnapped. It was his own feet that turned away. He extinguished that fragile light himself, carefully crafting a delicate glass sculpture, only to shatter it with his own hands the moment it was completed.
Knives was back, he was still that same person, that brutal man who beat Vash and killed Rem, that bloodthirsty evil who wanted to destroy humanity.
The boy whose smile was so bright, the once warm sunshine, he who comforted Vash when he was bullied, now nowhere to see.
There wasn't a trace of him in the cruel man who stood there with that twisted grin.
That, too, is hopeless.
If Vash left halfway because he couldn't wait, it was simply Knives' fault for being gone for too long. But this time, it was Vash's choice, his decision, to run on the hopeless path of being alone, for he could no longer bear the hopeless path of seeing his love fading away before his eyes. It was just the choice between either this or the other kind of hopelessness.
I've waited for you. And now I'm the one who leaves.
