I'm doing this challenge with a colleague, but weekly instead of daily.

#1 - Sail into the Black

Here is my interpretation of the song Sail Into the Black by Machine Head.

Total change from my usual style, but I really enjoyed the process of making this one.

Tonight I decided to draw a moth again. But this time it's an imaginary one, based on my Synesthesia when I think about the french name Julien.

Julien is like orange soda, like a whirlpool, splashes or water, whipped cream (especially the texture and the noise it makes when coming out of the bottle). It's orange and deep forest green, with some off-white.

It's super hard to transcribe exactly what I have in mind, but it's just inspired by it, not an accurate representation of course 😊

Also, I'm experimenting with my signature. I love the little echo bug I used until now, but I'm thinking of using my real initials, I don't know.

Mutation March: Botanical Beasts!

After years of wildly mapping out the many strange forms of my surreal creatures, I've decided to try a new approach. The challenge is still the same basic premise--every day, draw an animal but with a weird twist (whatever that means to you)--now with the additional lens of making animals with a botanical influence/aesthetic.

Mutation March #2 Hippopotamus

I stumble upon the #MutationMarch2025 prompt list on Bluesky, and I think I'll try to doodle a few of them this year. And I'll probably do everything traditional, with a mix of alcohol markers, colored pencils and acrylic markers. I'll try to improve my color skills and slowly work towards a more stylized style.

The Capricorn

I sat down in front of a youtube video, with the simple goal of doodling around on my tablet, trying new brushes and just have fun drawing.

But I ended up with this and I'm not mad at it 🙃

It's a capricorn bug, Cerambyx Cerdo, with an astrological twist. So if you're a Capricorn, here is a bug for your birthday ☺️

It's hard for me to stylise things and to drift away from the realistic side of things. For this one I didn't even start with a sketch and went right in with the markers. This way I was forced to be less detailed and it worked.

The very first and last moths I drawn during October.

And my moth you can see the progress! 🤯 I loved drawing this little creatures so much, I'll probably do more in the future.

By the way, I took the 12 most liked ones and made a calendar out of them! I'm sorting out some admin issue and they'll be available on my store hopefully before December.

In the meanwhile I'm exploring other topics and improving my skills in drawing people. (I much prefer moths tbh). And I just joined Bluesky too : @charlinem.bsky.social

Roll for bugs #4 - Alucita Grammodactyla

For this promt, the dice gave me:

a real bug: Alucita Grammodactyla

style: vaporwave/synthwave

I experimented with brushes I am not used to and of course the colors are not realistic. But I love it, I should work on a better background 🤔

This moth is so interesting, I wonder how it can fly with those wings.

Roll for bugs #3 - Style study

For this Roll for bugs, I ended up with this prompt:

a real insect

my choice of style

So I decided to take this opportunity to do a style study of one of my favorite artists Eliot Baum. I used the emperor card of the Sefirot tarot deck, and try to take elements of its style and apply it to my bug drawing.

Even though I manage to get a similar feel, the style is not even close ahah 😅 But it was pleasant to draw and I really love this style. What do you think?

Roll for bugs #1 and #2

Now that Mothtober has ended, I'd like to improve my skills in drawing from imagination + more dynamic drawings and explore styles.

So I launched a Roll for bugs serie. I let coins, dice and wheels decide what kind of bugs I should draw.

The first roll was:

Imaginary bug

2 pairs of legs

3 pairs of eyes

more than 3 pairs of wings

1 color only : purple

smooth texture

inspired by a country: Azerbaidjan

Not super happy with the end result but that's the first time i'm drawing something that doesn't exist, in years. That's only the beginning !

The second roll:

Imaginary bug

more than 4 pairs of legs

4 pairs of eyes

3 pairs of wings

5 colors: brown, orange, green, blue, and black

shiny texture (ended up not so shiny :/ )

inspired by "Ask partner": he said Capybara ✨

And that's how we got the Caterpybara!

Mothtober end and what's next!

I think it's the first time I complete a drawing challenge on time and with such detailed pieces. From the first to the last piece, I can definitely see a lot of progress. Here is what I learned:

Digital drawing on a tablet: this challenge really helped me get comfortable with my tablet and the app I use (Infinite Painter). I know have a set of favorite brushes and I know better how to use them to create the textures I want

Colors and proportions: I used to be quite shy with colors and it was one of the main things I wanted to work on this challenge. It helped me see all the subtle nuances and learn how to better choose my colors to match and balance. Same with proportion, my eye/hand coordination definitely improved

MOTHS! I learned sooo much about moths. All the species I didn't know about, where they live etc... This was very interesting.

And now I'm curious: which one is your favorite? Please vote here to tell me 👀

Next

After moths, I'd love to work on centipedes and millipedes. After all the beautiful colors and patterns, the legs will definitely be a challenge 😅

I'd also like to start a "Roll for bugs" serie on tiktok where I let dice and wheels decide what bug I draw next. I think it will help improve my skills a lot and could spark cool ideas. Follow along if you'd like :)

Peppered moth - Mothtober #31

This moth specie actually started white, splattered with black spots. But in the 1800s in UK, during the industrialisation era, trees started getting covered in soot. The moths with more black spots were able to camouflage better and generation by generation, a fully black morph of this specie was born. It's called: industrial melanism. Since then as the environmental norms have improved, the white morphs population increased. It lives in many different places: China, Russia, Mongolia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Nepal, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Europe and North America, between late May and August.

About the drawing

With this superb moth, Mothtober ends! I chose to to the black morph to challenge myself working with only black and greys, and also because it's Halloween/Samhain.

This was an epic moth, I'll do a proper recap soon but I wanted to say

Privet Hawk Moth - Mothtober #30

This hawk-moth is huge, with 12 cms. It's original area is Europe but it has been accidentaly introduced in Australia, Canada, New-Zeland and USA where it became an invasive specie. It can be see between May and August. If you disturb it, it can hiss.

About the drawing

This one was both simple and complicated to do. I had lots of trouble for the abdomen part but I was fun to render the smooth gradients of the wings.

Angle shades - mothtober #29

This moth is Urals and also in the Azores, in Algeria, and in Asia Minor, Armenia, and Syria.

It's a migratory specie that flies at night and can be seen from May to November. They are strongly attracted to light and sugar, and during the day you can spot them resting on fences or wood.

I had an exhausting day and not so much time to dedicate to this drawing. It's a shame because even if it looks like a regular brown moth, it has beautiful subtle color variations and patterns.

The Atlas Moth - Mothtober #28

The Atlas Moth, Attacus Atlas, is the biggest moth in the world. The record is at 30cm. Sometimes it's nickname "Cobra moth" because of its wing's shape, resembling the side profile of a cobra. It can be found in South-East Asia and Indonesia. Suprisingly, it only lives 4 to 8 days because it can't feed.

Oh my, this one wasn't easy to do but so enjoyable at the same time. All the details in the wings, I really had to battle my perfectionism. But in the end I'm very happy with it.
