Gwen slams her laptop closed, tosses it angrily into her bag along with everything else scattered around the desk that belongs to her. Her eyes sting with the threat of tears but she'll be DAMNED if she starts crying now.

❝ And I waited patiently for you to open up to me. I would have told you what I was when I was READY. ❞ she snaps but it's less heated, more hurt, but that didn't mean she wouldn't explode again. ❝ You didn't do anything. I tried to bring it up a few times . . . but it's . . . ❞ hard for her to talk about, even harder when she knows she doesn't even have any answers for her own damn self let alone provide them for August. Talking to Verdona was never an option.

She should try to see it from his point of view . . . but she doesn't want to. All she heard was Charmcaster and lost her damn mind. That hurt her more than if he found out about her physiology accidentally from Ben, at least then she'd know how to handle it.

She pulls her jacket on in a huff then throws the strap of her bag around her shoulders, still unable to look at him and itching to be anywhere else as her attention turns towards the door, planning her exit strategy. ❝ I've told you things about myself that nobody else knows and just because I wasn't ready to talk about this one thing that I don't even like thinking about . . . you go and get caught up with the woman who terrorized me since I was a kid. I don't know how either of you got your hands on that file but I hope reading it was worth it. ❞

Ah, there it was. The shame rising in the back of his throat, brought into an inconvenient uproar by Gwen's righteous words. And she was correct: even as August had made his way through the files of the agency, he knew this was a breach of trust. And every step of the way, he justified it.

August didn't even mention that he'd banished Charmcaster right back to where she came: Gwen didn't even mention it. And the young wizard knew better than to stand between Gwen and a door. Even if that was all he wanted to do was to intercede himself, to block her way, to make her hear him...that wasn't the way.

August stared at the ashes on the floor as Gwen spat her fury at him. That file hadn't been right either. "You're right." He said, giving a nod. "It was a breach of trust, and I'm sorry." 'But' didn't follow. 'But' would've rendered his words meaningless. "I'm scared when you fly away, Gwen." August didn't raise his voice. Magical amplification would be easy in this space; that would be intimidation. You don't do that to the woman you love. God, you don't go into her medical records either. "I'm scared of what if you don't come back. Or worse, you come back beyond what I can to do help. That...that was an easy target to pick at." Ah, there's the shame again. "So I went looking for the only way to know for sure what I'd be capable of doing. I found what I can do. But right now? No." He said, meeting her eyes, tears in the corners of his. "It wasn't worth it to be betray your trust. And I'm sorry."

Her brows knit together at the sight of the folder, confusion on her face. She looks towards him and then back, finally noticing the logo etched into the middle of it. She didn't have to open it to know what it was but he oh so graciously did that for her too.

It was like the wind had been knocked out of her lungs, the blood drained from her face and she suddenly feels like passing out. Her fingers trembling as she picks it up, staring at the goofy ass picture of her in the top corner held in place by a paperclip. Azmuth knows she couldn't be serious when her cousin was around. He said it would be funny if their official documents had them doing a silly face and her grandpa promised it was going to be sealed anyway, to protect her.

It took all of five seconds before she's on her feet in anger, the documents in her hands going up in flames. ❝ Are you fucking kidding me ?! Is that what you're doing when I'm off saving the world ? Going behind my back with her and what ? ❞ she'll say and do anything to avoid discussing the actual contents of her medical file and that's not even what she's upset about the most.

--Okay, Gwen incinerating the folder wasn't a good sign. And those weren't even August's records! Someone was gonna have his ass for this.

If Gwen left anything of him after this.

August's eyes widened at the accusation, before his brow furrowed. Green eyes grew stormy. He folded his arms, his feet planted. Gwen furious was a terrifying thing. But August wanted answers. He wanted the truth. "When you're off saving the world, I'm either trying to save it with you, or waiting for you to get back." He started. "Gwen, why didn't you tell me any of this? I've shared everything with you." The brand on his forearm itches a little. "What did I do to make you think you had to hide any of you from me??"

It did feel more than a little unfair. Everything he'd bared to her, everything he shared, and Gwen still hid things from him. He loved her more than the stars, but now he was wondering just what he was to Gwen. Did she not take him seriously? Did she not trust him?

What made this worth hiding?

❝ Hmm ? ❞ she's distracted by the laptop in front of her, working away without much thought to her surroundings. There's too many cold cases, too many active threats and not enough time or people on her team to mitigate it all but Rook was helping some of the load, thankfully, and both keeping in close contact with any new developments.

Her pen taps rhythmically against the table as her eyes scan over reports and walls of text, gaze briefly shifting to August and back to it again. ❝ What are you talking about ? ❞

August almost hadn't said anything. But this was pushing it.

"I didn't want to believe Charmcaster. I know he's a slimy little jerk on the best of days." August approached her desk slowly. "But now I just want to know why you didn't think you could tell me this." He didn't slam the folder down, like his worst side wanted to. Instead, he placed it next to her quietly, and stepped away. Hurt wavered into the dangerous waters of anger as he did, watching Gwen for her reaction. The folder was a Plumber medical file, on Gwen. "Gwen, we've been together a long while. We've been through the rough and come out better. So I don't understand why you couldn't tell me this." A gust of magic. The folder flipped open.

And revealed Gwen's nature as not-quite human. "Gwen, what is an anodite?"

Padmé turned away from August so he could no longer view the rosy tinge working its way into her cheeks, the smile effectively being kept out of her voice at least.

“I was not aware blushing mattered to Jedi…”

August sat with his chin in his hand, catching her reflection in the window of the office. The blush, the smile. Even when she sounded stern, her joy was like wind chimes in the force: ringing gently to soothe ear and mind.

"It's a good look on you, Padmé."
