Prompt 8

Using the #picturebooks hashtag on Instagram, provided me with many different images of a whole range of picture books, and i thought it provided me with more rather than tumblr, however, i think that other social media platforms such as Pinterest can provide teachers with much more, as it provides detailed lesson plan ideas and many different creative activities which teacher can draw inspiration from.

I would not use social media platforms such as instagram with my students if i did not think they would use it a responsible and mature way, as there are many inappropriate images floating around. I would need to do a thorough examination of that particular area before allowing my students to use these tools. However, if done correctly, i think social media is a great tool for students to expand their research.

Prompt 7

When i searched #picturebooks into the search panel, I came across an image of a book which looked like it would have an interesting story, as you don’t really see lions and mouses playing nicely 

This story tells children that no act of kindness is ever wasted, after a lion spares a mouse his life, and lets him go, the mouse later comes to the lions rescue and sets him free from a trap.  This would be a great book to read to children, as it teaches them that if they are kind to one another, good things will come.

Prompt 6

I watched a video that was called, ‘learn a Dhuraga greeting’, this video teaches students abut the greeting ‘wallwanni’, which means, ‘I hope you have a safe journey’, or ‘I hope you have had a safe journey’, It is a word you can use when someone has arrived or leaving.  I think this would be a great video to show students, as it teaches them about one of many Indigenous languages. As there are so many different Indigenous languages, I think a great activity would be for students to do their own research by finding an Interesting Indigenous word in a book, and stating the meaning of the word, students can do some research online about the specific language they have chosen and find some interesting facts. A poster can be made and students could share what word they have sound and what it means, and share with the class some interesting facts they have found. One book that can be used for this activity is called ‘Warnayarra the rainbow snake’, this story shares how children are taught how to write in their own indigenous language in a bi-lingual school.

Prompt 5

There was no food, no strength, a cold night, I felt hollow and transparent, all I heard was silence, i died inside.

Many ignore what they cannot see.

Activity for the picture book ‘Dust’:  Before the children read the book, based on the front cover, i will get them to write a sentence about what they think the book is about. They will then draw a picture based on what that they think they might see in the book. We will share and discuss all the different predictions.

Prompt 4

Classroom Displays - What is good content, and what may be unhelpful content in a classroom display

I think it is so important to have good content on display in a classroom, i think good forms of content are ones that relate to what the students are learning at the moment, displays that can help them throughout the year, and content that they can look at when they need guidance.  For example, I have found a display on Pinterest which would be useful in the classroom:

This type of display will ensure that students can check their work which will give the teacher more time to grade. It is something that can stay on the wall all year round so that students become better writers. if students are learning about verbs and nouns, their should be a board that displays this.  I think it is also important to display students works around the classroom, each child’s work should be included at some point in the year. This will give them something to be proud about, and encourage them do do their best.  I think that unhelpful classroom displays are ones that are not relevant to the students, such as having large timetable posters in a prep classroom. Other unhelpful displays are posters and displays that are too cluttered which could be distracting.

Prompt 3

Multi-literacies.

Upon reflecting on how much I use and make meaning from text, i have realised i use text much more than i thought, my whole day is basically consumed with text which makes me realise how important and vital it is in everyday life. 

When i wake up the first thing i see is text when turning off my alarm, everything i use has text on it, from toothpaste to the food i eat.  I start off the morning usually by reading text messages and responding, and scrolling through social media, by reading captions on Instagram and posts on Facebook. i read and respond to emails, and check the weather.  I read news articles daily, and search things on google and Pinterest daily.  I read university content, timetables for my classes as well as my gym timetable, at the gym I read the numbers on the machines and weights.  I read the text on road signs whilst i drive, as well as my speed limit.  The most common form of text which i have used in the last week is social media, and it has made me realise that i need to spend more time off social media and more time reading books and engaging myself in more activities which will benefit me.

Prompt 2

A prediction activity

I would write three questions on the white board or on a big poster paper: 

Why do you think the title is called ‘Are you seeing me?’ 

What could the quote “We all need to spend some time inside the story” mean?

and 

What could the images on the front cover tell you? 

These questions would cover both the graphics and text.  Students will be given sticky notes and will be asked to try and come up with predictions for all 3 questions, and stick them around each question. 

After students are done, I will start reading the text, each time a chapter has ended we will go through the sticky notes and put a sticker on the ones that have predicted correctly. At the end we will see how many predictions were right.

Prompt 1

When I was in Grade 3, I remember my teacher reading a different novel or story books to us throughout the year. My grade would get so excited and couldn’t wait to sit down quietly and listen to our teacher read. Usually this would be at the end of the day or anytime we had free time. One book I remember my teacher reading was ‘Aliens for Breakfast’, by Stephanie Spinner. He would read with such expression, putting on different voices for each character, he made it so much fun and enjoyable. This taught me that the way you read a book is so important, you definitely need to use different tones and expressions when reading to children as it makes it so much more interesting and will draw them in.    I cannot wait to read stories to my students, using the same methods my teacher did in grade 3.
