《 @teenhero 〈 kim 〉 》
‘ it’s cruel, period. ’ even when she’s grateful for such a chivalrous action as creating a physical barrier between ice and blue dye and her multi-step skincare routine, she can’t help but find something to argue about. at least this time it’s not directed at him, but the social structure of high school in general. she fills up the cup in hand with warm water and rinses shampoo and bits of crushed ice and sticky syrup with it moments later. ‘ there’s no reason for it. in fact, I’m pretty sure it qualifies as assault, but because it’s happening to the most-hated club in the school, no one cares to actually do anything about it. ’
a deep breath, a slow exhale — calm down, possible, before you fly into rant-mode and can’t stop. there’s a beat as she squeezes conditioner into her palms, gently lathering it in his hair. ‘ I hope you don’t mind your hair smelling like strawberries. it’s all I had in my gym bag. ’ and at the thought of her making him look like a hero, she can’t help the smile that cracks at the corner of her mouth; he doesn’t see it as she turns to fill up the cup again, but it’s still there in the softness of her tone as she speaks again. ‘ and I hope the girl you were trying to impress saw. otherwise you did that for nothing. ’
Ben kept his smile to himself when she bit back, like he knew she couldn’t spend ten seconds alone with him without snapping about something. Though oddly enough, the thing she was mad about this time didn’t have anything to do with him. It was fun to be on the other side of the heat for once.
“Something tells me you aren’t used to getting picked on.” Ben didn’t agree with the arbitrary social hierarchy or whatever nonsense either, but he’d been part of it for so long that he learned to not expect anyone to do anything about it. Bullies would be bullies, and if Ben wanted someone to teach them a lesson about hanging him in a tree by his underpants or throwing a slushie in his face, he’d have to do it himself. And if other kids needed protecting from the same thing happening to them, then he’d stand up and do that too. “That’s why people like me have got to look out for people like you.”.
He took a hint and quieted down when she paused for a breath. “I think I can stand for smelling like a smoothie instead of Arctic Courage™ for one afternoon.” He joked, but really he was in heaven. So this was why girls always smelled so good all the time. “Oh, totally.” He managed to puff his chest out, even in the somewhat compromising position. “I mean, saving the day is usually enough of a reward in itself, but no story’s complete without the hero getting the girl.”
i’d have to work ten times harder than those people.
《 skymade 〈 willow 〉 》
“Hey, Ben?”
Willow’s toeing the edge, as always – figurative and literal. She places one foot in front of each other, carefully, arms stretched open wide as counterbalance, face scrunched in concentration to keep from tumbling.
“Are we friends?”
Ben was watching her carefully from her side, matching her pace, ready to leap into action if she slipped off the edge of the crater she was walking. They’d managed to find a planet with an atmosphere similar enough to Earth’s for Ben to survive in, and off the grid enough for Willow to hide out for a while.
“Hmm?” he hummed, unusually quiet for him. Something about her tone put him on edge. While he was looking for clues in her expression, he tripped on something that scuttled by him on the ground. He would have fallen on his face if it weren’t for his hero-like reflexes. With a smooth and so very cool-looking recovery, he fell back into step and cleared his throat.
“Friends?” He asked, voice teetering on soprano. “Like, you and me?” It was ridiculous that he was getting this flustered. When was he ever this nervous around Willow? Things always felt so easy with her, so natural. So easy and so natural that you would think it was painfully obvious that their relationship was much more than the two of them being just friends.
“Well, yeah, Willow --” She was his friend in that he liked hanging out with her, and making her laugh, and going on space adventures with her, and dancing with her, and he always always had her back. But friends don’t usually, like -- totally make out. And that was a line that he quite enjoyed being on the right side of.
“But it’s kinda . . . sorta more than that, right?”
《 @hivebreed 〈 tak 〉 》
said: (to ben) ‘ you’ve always been my favorite. ’
Ben snorted at her affection so suddenly that his smoothie nearly came back out his nose. He wanted to give her a snotty look, or a cocky grin, or any expression from his heroic repotior that would convey the message: oh my god you sappy sap. But when he looked at her, after wiping his mouth with his sleeve and placing his to-go cup on the hood of his car, he couldn’t help but beam with a wide, genuine, sappy smile of his own.
He laughed, because that’s what humans like Ben did to fill empty space in conversations that would otherwise be occupied by tension, or nervousness, or confusion -- at least that’s what he thought he remembered Gwen telling him once. He kinda always thought humans laughed just to laugh.
He put his palms down behind him and leaned back. It was only a matter of time before he came up with something obnoxious to say. “You’ve got good taste, you know that?” But his smile was still warm -- not arrogant despite his words. “Out of all the Earthlings you could have picked to be your favorite -- I’m about as good as they get.”
