For one, if the artist meant to show them running side by side without holding hands they would have moved them apart enough that there would be no overlap. In vector art/when working with silhouettes you want easily readable, clear forms.

Second, that would be a really odd running pose with one arm outstretched like that. Look at pictures of people running, both arms are always bend at the elbow more than just a bit.

So either the artist is fucking shit at their job or, yeah, they are holding hands.

EDIT: Also, they are clearly looking at each other and and not straight ahead or behind them, like I assume people would when running for their lives.

In addition to writing the Skulduggery Pleasant books, Derek Landy has also written several screenplays. His screenplays Dead Bodies and Boy Eats Girls have both been turned into films.

Skulduggery Pleasant was titled Scepter of the Ancients in the US. The US publishers were worried that readers would be confused by the book and the series having the same name.
