Welcome, stranger. You can call me Rin or Laurelin. This is my RP sideblog for Maeglin – I follow back and send asks from my main blog, @lightofthetrees​.

Here are the basic guidelines I generally go by.

I’m (well) over 18. I’m only comfortable roleplaying with others who are 18+.

This blog may contain triggering content/themes. If you want me to tag a specific trigger, please let me know.

I don’t do smut threads.

Feel free to send anon questions or headcanon requests. When it comes to actual RP, however, I’d prefer not to do whole threads with anons.

My IMs are always open for plotting and ooc chat, and my askbox always hungers for memes.

I usually don’t take too long to respond, but I work full-time, so I may not always get to things right away. If I’m being slow, don’t hesitate to give me a reminder!

It wasn't often Viola found herself wondering what Elves got up to, more often she wondered how her kind had stemmed from something so obtuse and vengeful.

Now she sat wondering what this specific Elf thought it was doing, having wandered into the dark cave and right into a goblin trap "You know, you aren't supposed to step on the weirdly square stone with a line down the middle." The little orc peeked over the edge and into the shallow hole "Aren't pointy-ears meant to be smart?"

Viola herself was having to rely on happy thoughts to settle her nerves, she'd only ever seen something like this done and had no experience fixing something this bad "Yes, happy thoughts. Sleeping warg pups, the first kill of Spring, murdering your captors. Pleasant things."

Working as quickly and carefully as she could Viola worked to reset his ankle and get a makeshift splint on him to help keep it right "Shouldn't have to cut it off, but you can't walk on it for a while. I'm an orc, not a miracle worker."

Maeglin nearly bit through his own tongue trying to keep in a scream, but the mushrooms helped, and soon Viola’s work was done. 

“Thanks,” he said. He looked even more pale than usual, and beads of cold sweat ran down his forehead. “Do - do you think we can get out of here before the ones who made this trap get here?”

Oh, so the mangled ankle wasn’t enough to elect panic but the thought of living in a cave was.. Truly, Viola would never understand pointy-ears and their misplaced worries “Lay still or I’ll knock you unconscious for this.” She snapped, his ankle was in bad enough shape without him trying to wriggle away.

With one hand on his leg she rummaged in her bag and pulled out two small mushrooms and shoved them into his face “Oh yes, Morgoth forbid a pointy-ear not have soft sheets and a feather pillow for a few weeks. My heart bleeds, now eat them and quit squirming before I get that warg to sit on you.”

“It’s not that,” Maeglin protested, but he couldn’t tell her more. If she knew where he’d come from, then she might be tempted to sell him out to the other orcs. He couldn’t endanger Gondolin, no matter what.  He accepted the mushrooms and gave them an appraising sniff. It smelled like the tea his father had brewed for him when he’d broken his arm falling out of a tree as a child. Eating one of these probably wouldn’t kill him, then. He took a cautious bite of one of the mushrooms - it made his tongue tingle unpleasantly.

"Yea, sure, I get it." She huffed "You aren't the first pointy-ear to be repulsed by the idea of receiving my help. But be honest about it." The Elf could be as repulsed as he pleased, no one else was coming to help him anytime soon.

She forced him to eat both of the mushrooms before she set to work, the less pain he felt the less squirming there'd be "Now, think happy thoughts. Think about stuff that makes you happy because what I'm going to do will not evoke happiness."

Maeglin could understand why his father had used these mushrooms in tea instead of simply forcing him to eat them raw - their texture and flavor were both loathsome. But he did as Viola instructed, and soon found himself feeling dizzy but the pain was beginning to dull.

“Happy…thoughts…” he said, though it was getting difficult to feel his lips.

He thought of the ore he’d come here to find, and what fine blades it would make.

“Yeah, he’s my best friend, not big on talk but he can sure maul a squirrel when it counts.” The walls of the pit weren’t smooth, the rough surface was easy for an orc to climb and had made getting to the Elf very easy.

Once in the pit she moved carefully, eyes moving quick to make sure he wasn’t reaching for any weapon “Alright, Maeglin, I won’t syrup-coated it, you live in a goblin pit until you can walk again.” That was the least of the issues here.

After a few minutes she had a fair idea of how to help reset the bone and split it up “Gunna give you something for the pain, and then you need to think real happy thoughts.”

“Ah. So he’s a...” Orcs didn’t usually have dogs, did they? What were those wolf-beasts called again...? “A warg?”  At her words, he paled in panic. “Live in a goblin pit? No!” He tried to squirm away from her. “I-I can’t stay here. I need to return home. Even if I have to crawl.” Maybe Rog had been right - maybe he shouldn’t have gone searching for ore this far from Gondolin.

The fact he was injured made her more willing to help, an injured person could hardly be picky about who tended their wounds. Especially if they came from a race known for short tempers.

She left for a moment and returned with a large bag. The pit wasn’t too deep but she hardly expected him to stand up and climb out “Thanks, I got named after flowers that were found near me. Now, you gotta promise not to hurt me if I help you, otherwise Fluffy will eat you.”

“...Fluffy?” Maeglin asked, bewildered. Everything about this situation was bewildering - he wondered if the cave he’d wandered into had been filled with some kind of fungus and he was hallucinating all of this. A kindly orc(?) named after flowers?  Still, his injury felt very real, and he wouldn’t turn away Viola’s assistance. “Don’t worry. I won’t...hurt you.”

Looking him over she frowned at seeing his ankle, that looked rather nasty and in need of some attention. Her skills as a healer weren’t comparative to a trained pointy-ear but she survived after treating herself enough times.

“I’m Viola, who are you?” The girl asked curiously “Hmm, that doesn’t look normal, you want me to fix it for ya?” She asked and pointed to his ankle.

“Maeglin,” he said by way of introduction, gritting his teeth against the pain. “Viola - that’s a nice name. Unusual. But nice.” He glanced around the cave as if he expected the goblins Viola had mentioned to crawl out from between the rocks.  “I suppose I wouldn’t...make it far if I tried to...leave with my ankle like this. I’d...appreciate whatever you’re able to do to help.”

Maeglin hissed, half in pain and half in surprise. One second, he had been walking in the direction of the ore deposit nestled into the cave’s far wall, and the next, he found his ankle bent at an unnatural angle, pain radiating down into his foot and up into his leg. 

And then there was a voice - he looked for the source and found it, eyes widening in surprise. He’d never seen an orc up close before, but Viola was not at all what he’d been expecting.  “Who are you?” he snapped, keeping his voice to a whisper.

Oradhon regarded Maeglin with cold blue eyes, sensing the heavy tension in the air with his half-brother.

“Father is dead, you know.” the Sinda began. “He never left any will as to who his fortress would go to in the event of such a thing happening.”

"You're welcome to it," Maeglin said, not bothering to disguise the caustic anger in his voice. He hated that he could feel the sting of tears at the edges of his eyes - he didn't want Oradhon to see him so upset. "I don't intend to go back there. Not after what he did."

Duilin stood awkwardly at the door of Maeglin's house. He had drawn the short straw; the other lords had insisted one of them go and make the young lord welcome, and Duilin had been declared the friendliest. He just had no idea what to do say. He knocked. "Lord Maeglin? Are you home?"

There was someone here…? Maeglin wandered to the door blearily.

Maeglin opened the door - the large house was dark inside, heavy curtains drawn, and it was mostly empty still.

“Lord…Duilin. What a -“ he tried to recall his manners “- pleasant surprise. Please come in?” He opened the door and gestured at the vacant entrance hall. He was dressed in plain clothes, not quite nightclothes, but not far from them. They looked like the sort of clothes one might wear to do forgework.

“She spoke fondly of you,” Maeglin said with a nod, and it wasn’t just an empty platitude. Aredhel had told stories of all her friends in Gondolin, and she’d noted that she and Duilin had often engaged in friendly archery competitions at festivals.

Maeglin’s face brightened considerably at the question. “Yes,” he answered, almost before Duilin was done speaking. “Adding more workshops and improving the forge. Some of Lord Rog’s smiths offered to help me design the space.” He was nervous to meet them, but didn’t say so. He knew he’d want their help - he’d never designed his own workspace before.

The kitchen held little in the way of actual cooking supplies, and there wasn’t a servant in sight - there were several gift baskets on the central table that looked like they had been picked over.

“You’re welcome to take anything you’d like from those, if you’re hungry,” Maeglin said, filling up the kettle with water and lighting a fire in the cold hearth. “There’s some particularly good bread and honey in one of them - I don’t recall which.”

“You’re a craftsman, then?” Duilin asked, feeling as though he should have known. He doubted Maeglin would be interested in an afternoon sparring, then. Maybe he liked music, though. Perhaps he could ask him to one of Ecthelion’s concerts.

He looked over the gift baskets, wondering if he could guess who had sent them from the contents. He picked out the loaf of bread and began to search for a knife to cut it as he listened to Maeglin talk.

“Lord Rog’s smiths are very talented. I am sure you will get along well with them. Every expert loves to met someone who knows what they are talking about.”

“A smith,” Maeglin said, this time with a proud smile. “I learned from my - oh, uhm…the knives are over there, if that’s what you’re looking for.” It was a clumsy way to cover what he’d almost said, but he figured it was best to steer clear of the topic of his father.

He tried again, this time changing the subject a bit more clearly. “I’ve heard from Lord Rog that there are some very interesting ore deposits in the mountains nearby. I should like to find out more about them once everything here at the house is settled.”

Once he’d set the kettle over the fire, he rummaged around in a small wooden box and procured a few tins of tea leaves. “Do you know much about the area around the city?”

Duilin stepped inside, eyeing the drawn curtains and dark interior, and Maeglin’s state of dress. He felt a stab of pity; the poor child had hardly grown up with examples of lordship, and he had just lost both parents and the only life he had ever known.

But it was still somewhat unsettling.

“I... I uh, thought you might like some company.”

“That’s very considerate of you,” Maeglin said, though he hardly expected it had been Duilin’s own idea. Turgon had probably sent him - whether out of kindness or out of a wish to keep the son of his sister’s murderer under surveillance, Maeglin couldn’t say for sure. The rational part of him said the former, but a voice in his mind that sounded very much like his father’s said the latter.

“I’m sorry about the state of this place - renovations are…ongoing.” The home that had once belonged to Aredhel would now belong to her son, and to the newly formed House of the Mole. That meant sorting through what furniture had remained during the Lady’s absence from the city and adding a considerable amount of workshop space.

“Do you want tea or anything?” he asked, leading the way to the kitchens. It was polite to offer guests some kind of refreshment, wasn’t it?

Oradhon quietly filled a dagger, occasionally casting his eyes up at his half-brother. He didn’t mind Maeglin’s presence, only his gaze would make him wary at times.

“Greetings, Maeglin. May I ask why you’ve sought me out here in the forge?”

Maeglin nodded, then held out a hand. Resting in his palm was a brooch, the kind one would use to fasten a cloak. It was in the shape of a dove, wings outstretched - it had been a gift from Eol to Maeglin's mother - but it looked as if the clasp had broken. "Could you...show me how to fix this?"

He thought perhaps if he could show his father that he was capable at working with metal, he would be allowed to apprentice at the forge.

Sifting through the various screws that Maeglin retrieved, Oradhon eventually found the one he was searching for. Carefully, the Sinda lifted it from the container so as not to drop it.

To Maeglin, he said:

“I’ve showed you how to do this before. Replacing a screw in a brooch. If you’d like to help me, explain the process.”

Handing over the screw, Oradhon dropped it onto Maeglin’s palm.

“A master smith must be able to explain the entirety of the process.”

“Of course,” Maeglin said. “First, I will set up my work space.” He moved to the table, then unrolled. a leather mat and placed the brooch on it. “I must make sure that I have the correct tools for the job.” His keen eyes quickly scanned the shelf of small tools beside the table. 

He reached out and selected a small screwdriver, one small enough for use with eyeglasses and jewelry, then presented it to Oradhon. “This one should be the right size for that screw.” 

He took a moment to think through the next steps, picturing each one in his mind before speaking them aloud. “I’ll need to line up the loose piece with the brooch to ensure that nothing will be crooked, then hold it there. Next, I will add the screw and help it along a bit to stabilize it before using the screwdriver.” 

After he finished, he seemed unsure how to fill the silence other than asking, “Was...was that satisfactory?”

Waving Maeglin over to a nearby anvil, Oradhon gently placed the broken brooch on the flat surface. Gathering some tools, the Sinda quickly set to work repairing the piece. Positioning a set of eyeglasses on his nose, he was able to pinpoint the problem now magnified.

“Alright, let’s start with this.”

Pulling out a pair of thin tweezers, the Sinda began pulling at the bent clasp. A small screw was missing, that held the pin in place in the clothing.

Without taking his eyes from the brooch, Oradhon instructed:

“Do you know where I keep the small screws? Bring one here so I can replace the missing one.”

Maeglin nodded again and went to a nearby supply shelf where nails and screws of various sizes were organized into small wooden bins. He selected one that looked to be approximately the right size and returned to Oradhon, placing it on the table before him and watching with unnervingly rapt attention to see what his half-brother would do next.

(@huiliel) Delie was not sure barely a few summers old now if her gift was any good but all the same she brought her brother a few shiny pebbles and a snail which she left on his workspace.

Lomion smiles, knowing exactly who the gifts are from. He polishes the stones and sets them in a bracelet fashioned of thin silver wire, which he presents to her in a few days when he is finished.

Later the same afternoon that she left the gifts, he takes Delie to build a little home for the snail to live in next to the pond near the house.

Delie squatted down next to her big brother, walking in a little shuffling manner as they build the snail a home and spoke, “Ada did not like the froggy I gave him like you like snail. But Nana said that froggy reminded her of one of her cousins,” She told him secretively and looked at him curious what he thought of the information, “Ada does not smile, not for me.”

Lomion smiled, wrapping the end of a leaf around a twig to make a tiny flag then planting it in the soil beside the snail-house’s front door. “It is...difficult to make Adar smile. Even with froggies. I think I too tried to give him one as a gift when I was your age.” He wrinkled his nose - being scolded for interrupting his father’s work was not a pleasant memory.

“But he does like rocks like the ones you found for me. I can show you where to find some that are even shinier - little gemstones that wash up sometimes in one of the streams.”
