A myth is far truer than a history, for a history only gives a story of the shadows, whereas a myth gives a story of the substances that cast the shadows. - Annie Besent
I might let you live todayâŚâŚ dumbass. MAddie let herself be pulled up, and eyed him warily. Mmmhmm, man this had better be good if youâre asking me to insult you.Â
Good, 'cause I'd like to not die a virgin. He smiled softly, dropping her hand and motioning for her to lead the way to the kitchen. Eh, it's good enough , now go or your pancakes will be cold.
Lily raised one blonde eyebrow before straightening slightly at his words, her eyes narrowing. Kill him now or lat- oh.This was getting interesting. But she wouldnât admit to anything yet. I see. Well then Mr. Iâm-a-hunter-who-knows-it-all, tell me more about how I broke Ian out if his cell and how my owner is Ryne and how youâre playing possum- of course, I might turn you into a dead one.
Well, no one's claimed him yet, meaning that if he's out of the cells it wasn't because he's a god lay. You're the only other person that would free him. He rolled his eyes at Lily's tone of vice, she was the first person he had tried this with and it this rate she may be the last. Your owner is actually Michaela Moore but nice try, I don't even know what your connection is to Ryne other than Sloane. The leaders of this town all know an insane amount of what goes on here, yet when something actually goes down they suddenly have no knowledge of how that could have possibly happened. Do you really think that after all this time, two humans could be allowed to escape under the exact same circumstances within 5 years of each other and no one does anything about it?
Lily straightened and her eyes narrowed. I believe unintelligent shithead was in there as well. Ian and I have a lot of secrets. Iâm sure we can keep another.
Well I guess we'll see huh? Eddie raised his eyebrows at her, as if challenging her ability before flipping open one of his journals. I know you an Ian are hunters, just like I know that you brokehim outof his cell when he got here and who your owner is.
I guess you can say that I'm a hunter now too, that's why I came back here and that's why I've been playing possum.
'kay, well you know how you called me a dumbass and some other mean shit for coming back here? Well It turns out that I'm actually smarter than you, so tell me... can you and your cousin keep a secret?
Maddie leaned forward and stared at him. There better be blueberries. She rolled her eyes and swung her legs off the bed and held out her hand. Talk about what?
I'm not a complete idiot, of course there's blueberries. He took her, pulling himself to his feet but keeping his hand out to pull her up as well. Food first, that way your don't have to insult me on a  empty stomach.
What- the- fuck- Iâm- go- ing- to- kill- Maddie shot upwards and took a swipe at Eddie. Listen buddy, you better have palns to make me pancakes before I end you.
She laughed easily, I get what youâre saying, itâs fine. I wouldnât think youâd straight up call me a whore.Â
She briefly drew her eyes down to his finger on her nose before smiling rather smugly at him. She must be a really lucky girl, Iâd like to meet her someday.
Course not, I'd find some way to tactfully do it. Again, kidding, don't hit me.
Now sound good? Grabbing Juliet's shoulders Edison spun her around to face the mirror on the wall behind them. Juliet, he paused, gesturing from the mirror and back. Meet Juliet, this is my girlfriend... Juliet. So glad you could finally meet.
a code of silence about criminal activity and a refusal to give evidence to authorities.
Three hours ago.
Being a vaguely unwanted 'wanted' man had proven to be more boring than Edison had thought. He had figured that by now someone he trusted would have opened their mouth to the wrong person or that one of the hefe's would have noticed his unexpected Lazarus act and he'd be done for. But then how would that look? After six perfectly ludicrous months on the lamb he returns 'home' to exact his revenge and destroy the system only to be caught, tortured, and subsequently murdered after only two months on assignment -- over a girl? It would be pathetic, not to mention a whole new category of cliche. He'd be forever juxtaposed to the likes of Bella Swan when what he really wanted to be was up there next to the Harry Stampers of the world. Sure this wasn't anything close to Armageddon, there wasn't a giant asteroid racing towards the planet to destroy it 18 hours from now, but if he went out he wanted to go out like there was.
Instead of unwittingly preparing himself to be launched into outer space only to self destruct on a giant rock he was preparing to send his first 'transmission' of the month. He just needed to contact his group outside of town, or where ever it was they had moved after that rouge wolf had killed off their competition and deliver the information he had collected. That part never failed to amuse him, he was logging into Skype on his girlfriends roommates computer to report classified information back to an organization that thrived on their own privacy and subsequent code of silence. Omertà they called it. Was it ironic? Maybe, he wasn't sure. Even as an English major the parameters of irony had always escaped him.
As he waited for 'the Mothership' as he liked to call it, to start their video chat the twenty-three year old writer turned hunter riffled through his backpack to find his notebook. He had taken to writing the information he came across in his journals after a previous assignment ended terribly all because someone in one of the covens they were hunting intercepted their texts. Which also meant IMing was out so their next alternative turned to video chats. These actually turned out to be exceptionally easier than their previous choices, plus being able to look the person you were speaking to in the eye didn't hurt matters. Eddie was so lost in his thoughts as he poured over his chicken scratch handwriting he hadn't even noticed that Nora had started the video chat and was covering her mouth to keep from laughing hysterically as Mike mooned the screen.
"God dammit EJ pay attention when I'm mooning you!"
All of Nora's resolved crumbled at the expression on Eddie's face as he looked at the screen and away, shielding his eyes.
"What is wrong with you people? Can we just -- put that away, man."
It was weird how quickly they had gotten to this place, eight months ago Edison was just another outsider to join their ranks in hopes of finding a place to call sanctuary. But being one of the few that survived in their lifestyle he quickly became a trusted ally and friend. There were five people in their small faction: Nora, Mike, Angie, Rock (aka Reggie) and Eddie. Together they were the most outrageous people you would ever meet, and one of the best teams Eric had ever trained. Splitting up the team like this to handle a mission of this magnitude had strained their friendship but it was for the greater good. Even if it meant that he would occasionally have to stare at some white guys butt.
"He's gone E, you can look now."
Hazarding a glace from in between his fingers Eddie looked at the screen just to be sure before removing his hand altogether and reaching once again for his notebook.
"You know, sometimes I think about how badly I miss you idiots.. now is not one of those times."
"Oh, you love us, you know you do. Even if you are the baby of the family."
"I'm not a baby I'm twenty-three years old, idiota. And we're sure as hell not a family because you've slept with everyone in our faction except for me." He chuckled softly, flipping through the pages of his journal until he found the page he needed. He could hear Nora doing the same from her side of the screen and knew that their banter was about to come to an end in favor of doing work. "If we are then Eric really frowns upon incest since he told me to keep my hands off his sister."
"Iliza, you've seen her? ... Is she as hot as he is?"
"Yeah I've seen her and sure.... if you're into  angry Serbians or blood thirsty werewolves." Eyes widening, Eddie, cursed when he realized what he had said."Shit, don't tell Eric --"
"I have to tell him, if he finds out when we get there that you knew th --"
"Look, I just need some time to figure out how to tell him. I just -- I don't know if she's bonded with her sire yet or why she's even here but if we don't do this right she could become one of our next targets."
"Eric wouldn't --"
"But Jandric would. He might've changed his name but he's still that same guy. If she goes Sith on us he will kill her."
Everything about this left a bad taste in his mouth. He was already lying to so many people and now he had to add his boss to that ever growing list. Eric was someone he trusted with his life, someone he was indebted to, and now that was all on the line. He was so far behind on his assignment as is, he had gotten distracted by patching things up with the few people he trusted and as a result ended up with more unanswered questions then answered ones. That asteroid started to inch even closer to earth and he badly needed to switch gears if he wanted to keep his world from ending.
"Okay, let's just switch gears and focus on ending this transmission okay?" Nora's disapproval of the situation was written all over her face as she nervously clicked the head of her pen. She saw them all as a family and lies like this could only tear them apart. "Give me your names, I'm ready."
They went through another fifty names on the list, categorizing them as they went, having to stop occasionally when Edison couldn't translate the Serbian coding due to his terrible handwriting. It was methodical how they did this, almost mechanical as they called out their key phrases, crossing names off the list and adding new ones as they went. The names of fifty vampires all cleared or tagged for 'clean up' in a little over sixty days and they were still so far behind.
"Have you spoken to Kim, she hasn't done her transmission yet."
"No, I haven't seen her since we left you guys back in Texas. I'll check up on her soon and figure out whats up."
"Good." Nora nodded, shutting her notebook and pushing it off to the side. Their transmission was nearing an end and all that was left was to say goodbye. "If you can, you should see if you can locate some other hunters... convince them to join our side before we add the to the 'clean up' list."
"Will do, anything else?"
"Not really, no."
Eddie began clearing the table, sliding his things into his backpack so that he could hide it with ease if someone came in.
"But E, you look good. Happy, healthy... I mean, Rock said you'd find her but --"
The rest of her sentence was cut off by a somewhat bitter scoff that made the male wince when the sound reached his ears. He already knew where this would go, which is why he had specifically asked Reggie not to say anything, least of all to Nora. Nothing had ever happened between them, and part of that was because he had gotten into this with feelings for someone else, but that never stopped her from trying... or hoping that he'd change his mind.
"Yeah, she found me. The first night I got here actually, which is why you guys didn't hear from me right away. I'm living with her now."
"Oh, oh okay. Cool. I, uh, --"
"Kendell, Juliet. Witch CL, age: twenty-two."
"Eddie, we're not doing the witches yet."
"I don't care. Write it down."
"Kill or no kill."
"No kill."
"...Why."
"Ally." Edison looked the woman straight in her pixelated eyes, challenging her to ask him again. "Say that she's my girlfriend, or that she's pregnant, I don't give a fuck. You keep her off that kill list Nora, you got it?"
"Yeah, I got it." Nora's frown deepened and she turned away from the screen.
"Good."Â
Having said the last word, Eddie signed out of Skype, shut down the computer and placed it back in Daelynn's room where he had found it. He needed to get back to work, and finding out of Jules was really his ally in all of this was now his top priority.
Good, well if anythingâs super lame right now, itâs probably my social life, not so much you. Juliet stopped, looking away for a moment, licking her lips quietly she looked back to him with a flirtatious smile. I wouldnât say Iâd be screwed, just frustrated. Which isnât all that different from how I normally am.
You're a working girl now, you're bound to busy. And I totally meant that about like... you  being the most badass witch in town, not a whore thing. Not that there's anything  -- you know what? I'm sorry. He literally waved it off, flailing his hand around before clamping it over his mouth.Â
Quirking an eyebrow at the look Juliet just gave him Eddie removed his hand, pressing the tip of one finger to the top of her nose. Don't look at me like that, you know I'm saving myself for my girlfriend.
