the genuine and actual answer is that it took a lot longer to do research. pre-ctrl+f (and pre-digitized texts/searchable databases/etc) if you remembered a passage and wanted to cite it you would have to simply dedicate a good 45+ minutes to finding it. and that's assuming you had the physical material on hand. now you can search a word or line in a database and find it in seconds.
i feel a little silly explaining this like "in the olden days..." when this change has mostly happened within my lifetime (or, just outside the bounds of my lifetime). but it's an experience i have not personally had. most current professors have had it, though.
on a very real level digitization + search tools create a ton of potential when it comes to accessibility of information. now even if you can't get to a physical library you can go online and search for a line of plato and find it immediately. at this point many of the barriers to academic research are entirely artificial. this is a travesty but also a miracle.
