All the Cens are at some team bonding dinner hosted by hollanov and Troy and Shane are in the kitchen at the same time for some reason and it's the first time they've ever really been alone in the same room together. Shane's been on the Cens for a while now and everyone's finally clicking and eventually Troy brings up that "Yeah man I dunno it's gonna sound crazy but for a while there I kind of got the feeling that you didn't like me ha ha" and Shane kind of looks at him because "Well, that's because I don't like you" and Troy's like "Ah." OH TO BE A FLY ON THAT WALL

We finally had undeniable main character Will Byers with powers. It looked like Mike was stepping back into his leadership role. We got the Miwi flashback, one of the most beautiful scenes in the entire show. Vecna was deadly and terrifying and menacing and looked like he had specific plans for Will. The Robin and Will friendship was shaping up perhaps to be the best platonic duo in the entire show. There were people Bylering out who had never Bylered before. The snowball was gonna turn into an avalanche. Future Emmy nominated Noah Schnapp looked so tangible. Everything else felt brilliant and promising as well (Max teaming up with Holly, Kali’s return, Dustin’s grief complicating the Steve/Dustin friendship, everyone working together as one big team, Lucas’s steadfast devotion, Elmike seeming more platonic, icons like Mr. Clarke returning, new fan favorites like Derek, fascinating A Wrinkle in Time connections, references to the play, birthdaygate crumbs, etc). For one brief, shining moment, it looked like we had the world. And then the asteroid hit 💔

Mike and Eleven ending up together, meant NOTHING to straight people. It meant nothing because that’s what happens in every story.

Mike and Will ending up together, would’ve meant EVERYTHING to the queer community. It would’ve meant everything because queer people deserve to see a relationship that looks like their own.

It’s all just so so so sickening.

This is what bothers me most about byler not being canon. Netflix was feeding into it and encouraging speculation. And there was so much of it… Plus, the parallels to other shows/movies they used in the show for Mike and Will were of couples. Every little detail in the show is a reference to something else, so why wouldn’t we take the Mike/Will parallels at face value?

When will I be able to watch a queer love story without having to watch something like Heartstopper? Why is it we have to settle for the bare minimum? No I'm not satisfied with Robin and Vickie, they have no depth. It's more than just slapping a gay person/couple in a story and I'm tired of explaining it. God, I'm so sorry I'd like to see a love story with two fleshed out queer characters in a story THAT ISN'T ABOUT BEING FUCKING QUEER.

Yeah. And the creators didn't give enough of a flying fuck about them to give them an ending together at all or to let Vickie even be seen in the epilogue. They were barely ever given room to be fleshed out as a couple, and then they gave up on them halfway through the season.

Also no. It's not enough not having Byler, A. because they queercoded the fuck out of Mike and started the cyrano trope only to turn around and ignore it completely in the next season, and B. because we've had a million and one representations of "gay character gets rejected by their straight friend" and we wanted something different for once. Sue me for daring to dream we should ever expect more than that. Sue me for believing good relationship development would go anywhere other than returning to forced hetslop.

If the writers weren't glaringly racist, I’m just thinking about how it would’ve made so much more sense for Erica to have Holly’s plot.

We've known her since season 2 and would have been far more invested in her than in Holly, who we knew nothing about going into season 5. They wouldn't have had to retcon her age *cough*, as she would have been around 12 years old in '87, same as Will when he was taken. She would have had a future-sister-in-law dynamic with Max in Camazotz. She could have relayed so much information to Max about what's been going on while she was gone. We could have seen her nerd out about A Wrinkle in Time and science (which is canonically her favourite subject). We could have seen actual depth added to her character and given an active, emotional storyline to Lucas, who would have been hellbent on finding her. It would have been so satisfying to see that dynamic since we're used to them bickering all the time; a real true-to-life example of the complexities of sibling love. It could have been so, so good.
